Excerpts from Memoires of a Dog Hiker:
The funny things that happen to you while on the job. Today we were visiting a creek to cool off. After their dip, I called the dogs to have some treats. Every body was happy and wet, I headed the pack up the trail, away from the creek, listening to an audiobook through one of my Bluetooth earbuds. These earbuds were a welcome upgrade from the sketchy Dollarama ones. Bonus, that their battery lasted longer than the hike.
While heading up the trail, I stepped to the right to avoid getting body sponged by a soaked Portie, and stepped into an evergreen branch. The branch caught my earbud, and popped it out. I thought I felt it hit the front of my shoulder, so I looked down in front of me, to recover the wayward earbud. I noticed my waist pouch was still open from treat delivery, and hoped it had fallen into the opening. Not finding it there, the search began, including the creek behind me. I envisioned the branch catapulting my earbud into the water. I tried to locate it with my phone, by turning up the volume on my audiobook, to discover the earbud had been disconnected, and reconnection attempts didn’t work. Forty minutes of effort didn’t glean any better results, other than dirty fingernails from turning over rocks.
My brain went to other possibilities, replaying which dogs were around me when the earbud popped out. Could it be possible that one of them thought it was another treat I had dropped, and scarfed it up before another dog could get it? That could be another explanation for no connection, no reception from inside the stomach! I decided to go with that possibility, and inform the owners of the potential suspects, to keep an eye on their future poops, for black plastic parts. They diligently kept an eye out, and came up clean (so far).
Two days later, I revisited the same area. I decided to broaden my search. This paid off when I spotted a mangled piece of plastic and wiring, further up the trail on the opposite side. One side of the earbud and electrical innards. Mystery solved, as to what happened to my earbud. I still didn’t find the other remains, or the culprit. Needless to say, I won’t be listening to audiobooks in my right ear, from now on. I hope that expensive treat tasted good, whoever you are!
