SUBSTRATE DEPTH

To maximise the potential of a hamster enclosure, we should be filling it with the maximum amount of substrate it can hold. Hamsters are burrowing animals – it’s what they love to do! Making deep burrows is a key form of enrichment for our pets that replicates their wild behaviour. It also means your hamster can create their ideal chamber layout, with plenty of space for sleeping and food stores. Burrows also reduce stress, being a safe hideaway for prey animals, and good depth even helps hamsters regulate their body temperature.

Cage A in the diagram has only 10cm of substrate, which is still unfortunately a very common but misguided setup habit. This leaves the hamster with little to no burrowing room, and full height of the cage is being wasted with empty “air space”. Put it this way: You wouldn’t buy a large fish tank and then only fill it with 10cm of water, and the same logic applies to caging.

Cage B is a much more suitable layout because it uses platforms to maximise its vertical space. Platforms are an essential part of an enclosure that allow heavy items such as wheels and sandbaths to be elevated safely without sinking into deep substrate. Cages with bars should be wrapped with perspex or cardboard, as their base trays are generally not deep enough to hold substrate beyond a depth of 15cm or so.

Research shows that hamsters do not burrow when there is not enough substrate provided. Some hamsters also prefer use burrow starters, such as semi-submerged tubes, or multichamber hides. Substrate should be compressed as “fluffed up” bedding can’t hold burrows. Mixing different substrates together or introducing layers of hay can help to bind the substrate for easier tunnelling.

A 2005 study (The influence of bedding depth on behaviour in golden hamsters. Andrina R. Hauzenberger, Sabine G. Gebhardt-Henrich, Andreas Steiger) showed that all hamsters with substrate depths measuring 40cm and 80cm constructed their own burrows, whereas hamsters with just 10cm of bedding slept in hides. This proves that when hamsters are given the choice, they opt for sleeping in deep substrate. 40cm of substrate enhanced the lives of the Syrian hamsters tested.

Hamsters kept on 10cm of bedding displayed obsessive wheel use and spent much more time bar-biting, which is known to be a stress behaviour. Hamsters that were provided with 80cm of bedding never chewed their enclosure bars.

Hamster Info Ireland recommends an absolute minimum substrate depth of 20cm for dwarf hamsters and 30cm for Syrian hamsters. Where possible, these measurements should always be exceeded.

Haven’t been active on here for a minute and realized we hadn’t announced the passing of our sweet Emolga. We lost him early August and it hit us like a freight train. He started it all and we will continue to rescue hams in his honor. Rest in Peace baby Emolga 🖤 He joined us on our weekday trip this Wednesday and we’re so glad we can finally take him along for adventures. His sister got to give him kisses as he passed, and she sure misses sitting on top of his cage waiting for him to come out.

well, this is the last post i’d ever want to be making. especially at this hour. an unfortunately sad announcement. our baby emolga has not been feeling well for the past week. we knew it was old age the second we saw him, so kept him as comfortable as we could for the spare days we had left with him. he spent hours curled up with his dad, wrapped up in a cozy towel. fed his favorite treats (some not so good for him, like the pizza he suddenly gained energy to walk over to.)
but this morning, he has finally decided to take the journey across the rainbow bridge.

emolga was the first pet that spencer and i had together. and it lead us to a fantastic journey of hamster care, and ethical husbandry. emolga had everything he needed and more, and so did the 5 souls we’ve lost along our rescue journey. he started it all, he was the founding member of the Ham Sandwich Family. he forever will be.

here’s some things to know about emolga:

🕊️ this man loved his sand. we had to upgrade the size of his container over 10 times during his short life with us. he would dig for hours, successfully having the prettiest short claws by wearing them down over time. he slept in his sand, hid his food in his sand, and unfortunately (but fortunately for clean up) used his sand as a litterbox like a little cat! i will forever miss the sounds of him digging in the middle of the night, that we’re annoying at the time. but i’d kill to hear him scurry around again.

🕊️ he had unruly, ridiculously long hair, and even wings! most of my time holding him was spent brushing his long grey hair and spiking it up in the middle to make him look like one giant Mohawk, he didn’t mind one bit. as long as he was being held, he tolerated haircut after haircut, brush after brush, only nibbling you if you tasted like carrots or other yummy foods.

🕊️ i have never seen such a phenomenal level of empathy, emotion, and love from such a tiny animal. this baby smaller than the palm of my hand, would sense when you weren’t feeling good, sad or otherwise, and scurry over to the corner of his cage closest to us. placing one singular hand against the glass that separated us from him, until he gained our attention and came to snuggle.

🕊️ he was almost 3 years old, which is the oldest any of our hams have been, other than Zorua, but we only had her 8 of those months. we’ve had Emolga since he was a small baby. fresh out of petsmart (pls adopt small animals and don’t support breeding chains who supply and support a low standard of care for incredibly complex animals)

🕊️ him and spencer slept together for 7 hours straight once, don’t worry, i was playing video games and supervising them but he was content in the nape of spencer’s neck, or tucked into his side 🖤

rest in peace my sweet goose, hope you have so much fun with your brothers and sisters across there. you have all our love forever and ever

Another successful rehoming! I received Salem this afternoon from a friend who knew he needed different care. It’s honorable to rehome when you know they need more. 🖤 He’s so sweet, chunky, and came right out to be handled. He’ll be in this enclosure only temporarily until he meets his Mom later this afternoon! Will post update photos of his new home when I get them!

Love and hamsters,

As Christmas is fast approaching, many may make the impulsive decision to gift a hamster as a present to someone else. A pet may be an excellent addition to a home. However, living, breathing animals are more than just gift ideas for Christmas, birthdays, or other special occasions.

Taking care of animals is a huge responsibility, and they should never be given as gifts carelessly. Many individuals who receive animals as gifts realise that, no matter how much they want to, they are unable to make the long-term commitment to caring for their new animal companion. Animals deserve the greatest lives possible, but being given as a gift reduces the likelihood of that happening.
An important part of the process of getting a pet is is for the pet parent to fully understand and be prepared for the responsibility. Every animal deserves a pet parent with the time, energy, money, and enthusiasm to welcome them into their lives. Despite this, many people get "disposable pets” like hamsters as gifts without giving much consideration.

Consider what would happen if the time, money, and energy commitment you imposed on the recipient grew to be too much for them to handle. A bad match could result in the animal being abandoned, abused, or neglected, and having a low quality of life.
Pets come with effort, a long-term commitment, vet fees, and so a pet should never be an impulsive gift. Animals are vulnerable, living, breathing beings deserving of more than fleeting attention as a gift-wrapped surprise.

Swipe to find out the reasons why you should not gift someone a hamster!

Oops! I sure am behind on posting 😮

I figured a good informative post for this week would be about why we feed our hamsters "blocks".

The reason we recommend feeding our hams lab blocks is because these blocks have been specifically formulated for the proper nutrition of the animal they are meant to feed. They contain everything they need for a healthy diet, including micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Calculating micronutrients of a homemade food mix is IMPOSSIBLE without the use of a laboratory. Calculating the analysis of micronutrients in a mix that you made yourself requires the use of certain calculations and precise scientific equipment. You will also need to know the nutrient breakdown of each and every ingredient you've added. This is why a commercial lab block is recommended over homemade food mixes, for ANY animal.

Do we recommend feeding a seed mix? Of course! Seed mixes offer varieties of food pieces that provide enrichment and extra nutrients. Seed mixes also allow for a hamster to pick and choose which pieces they prefer, which is why we recommend feeding a lab block as well.

Hamsters can also be given treats in moderation! Remember, each treat given has it's own nutrient breakdown.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our admin team, we have an animal nutritionist on board!
