Spring is here and that means it's vaccine time! Call into Greenbelt and ask to have Dr. D out for an annual wellness and vaccines. Spring is the best time to get your core vaccines boostered to provide maximal protection for the 5 core equine diseases.

Have you ever wondered WHY we vaccinate horses in the spring? Because as the weather warms up, insect re-emerge and bring with them the potential of disease, like West Nile Virus and EEE/WEE which are both transmitted by mosquitoes. By vaccinating your horse prior to the start of mosquito season, you ensure your equine friend has a defense system ready to go against such diseases.

EEE/WEE, West Nile virus, Rabies and Tetanus are categorized as core vaccines, which means *every single horse* should receive them every year. Additional risk-based vaccines (Botulism, Equine Herpesvirus, Strangles, Equine Influenza, Potomac Horse Fever, Equine Viral Arteritis, Anthrax, Rotavirus, Snake Bite and Leptospiroris) are available that your veterinarian may or may not recommend depending on your horse’s individual situation (e.g., location/environment, lifestyle, use and age).

While you may be tempted to vaccinate your horse yourself with over-the-counter products to save yourself some money, be advised that the benefits of using a veterinarian for vaccinations far outweigh any savings you think you are making. For example, you may give your horses unnecessary vaccines or skip a booster dose, and the chance of improper storage/handling of products is far greater. Veterinarians know all the ins and outs: Vaccinations need to be scheduled around other medications to prevent interactions, and in the case of vaccine side effects, an experienced veterinarian is ultimately more qualified to handle the situation.

In addition, a vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for an annual physical examination of your equine friend, which allows your veterinarian to evaluate your horse’s nutrition and general health, plus detect and treat any conditions before they get established. So if you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling your horse's spring vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

To learn more, extensive vaccination guidelines are available to both horse owners and veterinarians on our website at https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines.

🚨🚨Cold Snap Colics🚨🚨
We've been seeing a lot of colics with this sudden cold weather. Make sure everyone is drinking enough water especially in these cold temperatures.

How can you increase water consumption? Here's a few tips:

1. Make sure fresh clean water is always available...this might mean chipping ice multiple times a day or getting a heated water source.
2. Increase salt consumption
3. Some animals can be tempted by adding a small amount of something sweet like Apple juice
4. Control water temperature. Horses prefer water around 10 degrees

Sheath cleaning season is upon us!
Remember, the most important part of sheath cleaning is actually to clean out the urethral fossa. This is what we refer to as removing the "bean". In some geldings the bean can become very large and painful making it difficult to urinate.

What is this worm?!?!😱

I got a panicked call this week when someone found a couple of these worms in a pile of manure they were scooping. Don't worry! These guys are just earth worms ☺️

Ascarids or Round worms can look similar but here is an easy way to tell them apart! Earth worms have a clitellum and round worms do not. Now you can tell the difference, easy peasy!

So glad this handsome fella is feeling back to his normal self after his brief altercation with his feed bucket.
Dr. D was able to stitch things back together with very tiny sutures and 2 weeks later his eyelid had healed itself practically back to normal. Today you can't tell anything ever happened! What a perfect example of horses with super healing powers🦸

Parasite Control Tip:
Many internal parasites continue to develop as long as temperatures are 6 degrees or warmer. That's why we talk about deworming after a hard frost. For folks in the lower mainland that is usually closer to winter rather than the fall.

When the temperature drops to zero degrees some parasite life stages will even die off. This is a good time to deworm because there is a lower chance of transmission.

The late fall and early winter is also the best time to deworm for tapeworms. This requires a dewormer that is includes praziquantel.

Need to develop a deworming protocol? You can't do it without f***l floats! Work with us to develop the right deworming protocol for your animals.

🚨🚨CAUTION🚨🚨 It's impaction colic season.
Animals tend to drink less water than they should this time of year because of weather changes and an increase in amount of dry feed. Horses are the most commonly affected but it can happen in any of our farm animals. How can you increase water consumption? Here's a few tips:

1. Make sure fresh clean water is always available.
2. Increase salt consumption
3. Some animals can be tempted by adding a small amount of something sweet like Apple juice
4. Control water temperature. Horses prefer water around 10 degrees

🚨Toxic Tuesday Alert🚨
This week's contestant is Black Nightshade or Solanum nigrum.
It is different than Deadly Nightshade and thank goodness for that! In general, Deadly Nightshade will kill you and Black Nightshade will cause colic and a headache.

Black Nightshade is flowering and growing in the Valley right now and is mildly toxic to everyone, especially when berries are green (unripe). It tastes quite bitter so usually it is only a problem in young animals that are curious and have nothing better to do than nibble on everything. Generally, they have to eat a fair bit to cause issues so not the most dangerous plant you might find in your pasture but worth getting rid of.

Now that's a sliver!
As fall coats are coming in animals can get a bit itchy. This can be totally normal as the weather changes and the hair coat adjusts but make sure you're watching out for external parasites like lice as well.

This silly girl though a splintering log would make a good scratching post...hind sight is 20/20. Fall is a perfect time to do a walk through of the property and tidy up before the bad weather arrives.

🚨Toxic Tuesday Alert🚨
Now that we have the rain back, things are growing again!🎉
There have been an abundance of mushrooms sprouting up in the last couple weeks so we thought we should talk fungi!
Now unfortunately, there are so many different kinds and many look very similar to each other so telling you which ones are toxic and which ones are safe is too challenging for this vet!
So instead, be cautious of them all and know that some of them can cause serious toxic effects in just about any mammal.
Be an Old mushroom picker not a Bold mushroom picker!
