Happy fall y'all! We've got a huge announcement - with preg checking season fully upon us, we've had to bring in some special reinforcements. Dr. Maddy Baron (Knodel) is joining our crew for fall run, and will be slinging an ultrasound at a ranch near you.

Dr. Baron grew up on a commercial cattle ranch just outside Seven Persons. She graduated from the WCVM in 2021. Since then, she has practiced in Manitoba, Missouri, and Alberta. When not practicing veterinary medicine, she enjoys hiking, paddleboarding, antiquing, and spending time with her husband Martin.

Please help us in welcoming Dr. Baron to the practice and area! If you want to discover which cows are open and eating your profits, you know who to call! 😉

The tiniest of testicles! Believe it or nut, this came out of a 1200 lb bull! It was a fight to get this little bu**er out of the sc***um and emasculated. Sure enough, there was seminiferous tubules within the tissue. I don’t discriminate with respect to size- when it comes to feedlot stags, they all get cut out in the end!

2 HOURS! That's the best window to get colostrum into calves after birth. Make sure you have high-quality colostrum on hand before your calving season starts!

When is the optimal time for a calf to receive colostrum?

The greatest window of opportunity for a calf to absorb antibodies through the intestine is WITHIN 2 HOURS of birth! Every minute counts!

Calves that are born to a difficult birth (C-sections or hard pulls), calves born into harsh environmental conditions or twins have reduced ability to absorb IgG and need more colostrum, and fast.

Colostrum replacers are an excellent alternative to waiting around in the middle of the night and guessing if that calf will receive enough colostrum before the 2 hour mark. Your warm bed is waiting!

Good luck out there! Happy calving!

With the hot and dry conditions we've had all summer, nitrates can be a big concern. We recommend always getting your feed tested, but if this is something you've foregone in the past, please consider doing it this year! Nitrate toxicity can result in weight loss, abortion, and death - feed testing is crucial to protect your herd.
