I know life is quite busy sometimes, and it becomes busy even for ours pups. When was the last time you went for a walk without any training in mind? Or took your dog for a car ride with the windows rolled down just for the sake of feeling the wind in your faces (of course if your dog is into it). Sometimes all we need is just time together without an agenda; whether you have a playful puppy or a wise senior dog, carving out time for them not only strengthens the bond you share but also brings countless benefits to both of you. Let them sniff! Sniffing is very underrated by pet parents, and sometimes some owners even loose patience with their dogs wanting to stop in every single tree to sniff during walks. But, did you know this a very important dog behaviour? It actually calms them, and release lots of “feel good” hormones. Studies have shown that it releases tension and even can make them feel more optimistic. Some say it is how they “see” the world, and if that is true how would you feel going for a walk without your sight? I get that it can be frustrating going for a walk, and not actually walking (and they sure also need the exercise), but that’s when training comes in handy, we can teach our dogs that there are “sniffing”walks AND “walking” walks. Please, pretty please, let them sniff! Your dog will thank you 😊

First snow!!!!!

Besides always using positive reinforcement and making the training process a very fun time, here a few things I also do to get my dogs to enjoy training:•1 Get rid of excess energy prior to start training. That doesn’t mean “tiring them out”, but just letting them enjoy the environment, exploring, walking, let them play between themselves, but not putting them into extreme arousal state, that actually prevents focus, which is the opposite of what I want. 🐕•2 Keep training sessions short. 5-10 minutes is a lot of time for mental stimulation, then we take a break, play, have some water, and eventually we can do another round of training. 💦•3 Don’t get upset at them. Communication between humans and dogs are HARD, and very often we are are not very clear in our instructions. Don’t rely fully in your verbal cues! If they dont get it, it’s okay, take a break, reset, and try again. Keep your cool, they can feel your energy ✨•4 Talk Less! The more you talk to them unnecessarily, the more your voice will turn into white noise. Same for repeated cues, if you say “sit, sit…sit” and they sit after the 3rd “sit” and you reward them, that’s the association they are making, to sit only after the 3rd repetition. 🦜•5 Make yourself their fortress. That’s bonding! I want them to feel safe around me, I want them to come when I call because they know they will be protected and not punished! Even though dogs do not speak human language, they do communicate with us their own way. 🐕Their body language says so much about them, about their feelings, about their fears…Unfortunately there are so many misconceptions about what their body language represents, for example, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean happiness. It’s a form of communication that may reflect different emotions, it can represent alertness or caution, and combined with other signals from different body parts, can simply tell their are feeling unsure. As trainers we are constantly learning to pay attention to the whole body. I learned to watch the muscles on their faces, lips, elbows, ears, eyes, even their fur.
