Respect dogs

A wordy but important tipsheet for respecting dogs

✨Learn & don’t ignore their genetics
✨Understand & Respect their body language
✨Expose them to new things safely and slowly — at THEIR pace
✨Get curious when they’re communicating discomfort
✨Give them extra space and extra patience
✨Don’t humanize them
✨Don’t pet them if they are not initiating contact
✨Give them a safe space that’s quiet, fully away from other people or animals, and 100% theirs and never break that trust by interrupting them there
✨Figure out what they like to do, regardless of whether you enjoy it too. Allow them to do it
✨Teach them all new things with high value rewards and praise
✨Let them feel at ease by being consistent and predictable
✨Consider their joint health and keep them at a healthy weight
✨Figure out the right amount of exercise that allows them to rest and be calm throughout the day
✨Create clear boundaries and stick to ’em
✨Have fair expectations (and know that these will change in time!)
✨Use training tools that work for your lifestyle, environment, human capability and dogs’ needs
✨Consider their heart and how healthy it can be
✨Remind others that humans’ needs are often different than dogs’
✨Consider that just because you want your dog to enjoy something or be ready for something because it suits your (humans) needs, may not be the reality of the situation, day etc
✨Make sure to communicate your dogs’ needs and boundaries to others and hold them to that standard - consistency builds trust!
✨Take more interest in your dog's body language around other dog’s and make decisions according to each unique situation and environment.
✨Remember that we all have off days, and yes that goes for our dogs too. This is why it’s always important to be in tune with what your dog is asking for from you

Stay cool, my friends!

Even when you think the temperature is OK or feels fine to you, your fur kids may feel very differently. Animals don't sweat like humans, so they heat up a lot quicker than we do. Their primary source of cooling down is through panting which is woefully inefficient when exposed to heat (they also cool down through their paws, so be aware of this when putting booties on your pups).

The #1 cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving them in a vehicle! Never-ever leave a pet in a car even on a mild day. While you're in the air-conditioned store grabbing a few things, your car is quickly turning into an oven. Pets can suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke.

Helpful Tips: Walk in the early morning and late evening when it is cooler. Carry water with you. Limit exercise on hot days. Avoid surfaces that absorb heat, like asphalt, pavement, metal, sand, and car seats. These materials absorb heat from the sun and can stay hot for hours (even after the sun has gone down). Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145° F (62.7c)‼️

Keep your fur kids safe and cool! Fans, cool surfaces, frozen treats, kiddie pools, cool washcloth under armpits, and sprinklers can all help keep the kids cooler on hot days.

Make sure fresh water and a cool place to rest is available at all times.

Rehomed after 10 years… Owning a dog is not a hobby, and it’s not like owning a car that we can just trade up when convenient. It is a lifetime bond and commitment that you are making when you bring a dog into your house.

This 10 year old GSD was rehomed after a decade because it was chasing ducklings and had high prey drive. Luckily, he found the two nicest, and committed owners, and quite honestly they hit the jackpot because he is a great dog.

This also brings up the point that, before getting a dog, make sure you are aware of breed of dog and the requirements for that breed.
