Why breed to a KFPS approved stallion?
Soon FHANA members can be asked to vote on FHANA taking on the registration of BBookII horses. (See FHANA board minutes of AGM in February)I fully support this vote. It has always pained me to see purebred Friesian horses deviate from the mother studbook, the KFPS and here in NA that means FHANA.
Why did FHANA decide to not register these purebred horses? Because FHANA supports breeding to approved stallions only. A BBookII horse is sired by a non approved stallion.
However a BBookll horse is still a purebred Friesian and should be welcomed 🤗 in its mother registry by FHANA facilitating the registration and allow them to participate at inspections 🧐
Back to my first question:
Why breed to an approved KFPS stallion?
I’ll try to answer that by explaining that an approved stallion followed a long intensive road, called selection process, which then gives us, the breeder all this extra useful information ℹ️
🖤 Inspected by trained judges. This weeds out conformation flaws and way of travel flaws.
🖤 Approved on extensive X-ray testing and semen testing. Reports are published
🖤 Linear score available. This is big! As a breeder you are looking to improve on your mares weaker qualities and anchor ⚓️ her strengths. By comparing your mares linear score (obtained at adult inspection) with the stallion of your choice, you can see if the stallion compliments her i.e. sloped croup by having a straight croup.
🖤 Stallion Report. I can’t say enough about this. Read the stallion report. It tells you about his sport aptitude, his strengths and weaknesses, if he has more potential as dressage horse (I.e high canter score 106 ) or showdriving. His character, his attitude, his willingness to work, if he is sensible, and so much more.
🖤 Carrier status is published (FHANA tests for carrier status as well, breed responsively)
🖤 Offspring testing 💎
If the stallion of your choice is approved on offspring, you know you are breeding to a horse of great quality. A stallion that doesn’t throw conformation flaws, a stallion that contributes to the breed in a positive way.
In a nutshell 🥜 breeding to an approved stallion gives you so much extra!
Now if we could only get more approved stallions in Canada 🇨🇦
