Many owners are prioritizing teaching their dogs tricks and “obedience” but not life skills. I mention “obedience” in air quotes because folks are teaching their dogs physical positions (sit, down, shake a paw, etc.) without a functional application for those positions.
If your dog can shake a paw, but bulldozes people when they come over… or if your dog can roll over, but wants to attack other dogs… then what’s the point?
Prioritize understanding canine behaviour, communicating effectively with your dog, and teaching them basic life skills so you can enjoy your life together. I’m happy to help you get there :)

The pony paddock gets p**per-scooped every day.
Why do we p**per-scoop? It’s is a parasite-preventative measure to keep our ponies healthy. It also helps to keep the flies down and smell at bay.
How much p**p do we scoop each day? We typically get a wheelbarrow full or 2/3 of our Groundwork wagon.
How long does is take to p**per-scoop? It only takes about 10 minutes if we do it daily. If we leave it for a week (very rarely) it’s closer to a 1.5hr job.

Last night something killed 22 of our broiler birds. This afternoon we moved the remaining birds inside the chicken tractor. Today farming sucked.

Just in case anyone passing by thinks we have a bird-of-prey stalking our broiler chicks (we’ve gotten messages), just know that it’s only a decoy.
We did need to put it out BECAUSE we had a falcon after them. Since the decoy went out, we’ve had no further issues. Fingers crossed that it continues to do the trick!🤞🤞

We went to the RCMP Musical Ride in Emo last night and it was fantastic!
A huge thank you to all those involved with organizing this for the community 👏❤️

Today we welcome a couple new friends to the Ranch 😃
Helen & Marble arrived this afternoon and are settling in outside next to the bunnies for the summer. They can hardly wait for kids to come and visit them! 🥰

Maria saw me pack the petting zoo hay bags in the trailer and had been waiting at the gate ever since! Haha!
See you at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre Teddy Bear Picnic from 11:00-1:30 today! If it’s rainy, activities will take place in the Memorial Sports Centre banquet room and we’ll be setup out front, under the overhang 😉

Well… it’s be six years of beekeeping without any bear trouble, but today our good luck ran out…
In our nuc yard, we lost one nuc completely, but damage was done to 6-7 altogether. We were out until 10:30 moving all nucs to the main bee yard, with the full-size colonies, and setting up an electric fence. Fingers crossed that does the trick!
Sidenote: the bees were PI**ED about being moved in the dark and it was a miserable task, overall… HOWEVER, by the time we were done the lightning bugs were flickering about so it added a little light to an otherwise dim situation.

The broiler chicks are outside and loving their pasture paradise 😎
Can we just take a minute to talk about how useless my donkeys are…? The fox has been back and killed 3 chickens, over the past few days, and here my “livestock guardians” are just chillin’ with the damn thing! 🤦♀️

The boys didn’t want to walk ponies today. I made them go anyway. Sometimes we NEED to do things that we don’t WANT to do; start teaching your kids that now.

🦨 Skunk witness protection program 🦨Skunks like to snack on bees so we have live-trapped and relocated THREE, from the bee yard, in the past week. I’m basically a pro now 😏Note: we waited for a while, for him to come out on his own, before removing him. He had a belly full of peanut butter & honey and we were all ready to get him moving so we could get home to chow down on our pulled pork dinner 😂

The toughest part about being an animal caretaker is that there are no days off…The past week we have had some brutal viral bugs make their way through the whole family… and the animals still need caring for regardless of how we’re feeling. Thankfully, I think we’re on the upward swing now. Wishing you a happy (and healthy) Wednesday! Here’s to making it over the hump-day 🍻 (imagine those are tea cups lol).
