Reminds me of the time my Border Collie was given a dewormer that was known to have adverse affect to herding breeds (she was okay thankfully)
Buoy’s Law passed by unanimous vote in the New York State Senate today! Having already unanimously passed in the New York State Assembly last week, the bill (S1289B/A4978) is now on its way to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law!
A victorious day for Buoy, my family, and all New York State pet owners!
Once the bill becomes a law, it will require veterinarians to provide animal owners with information regarding any drug dispensed to an animal, including any common adverse effects associated with the use of the drug, as well as the manufacturer’s precautions and relevant warnings.
In other words, in New York State, thanks to Buoy’s Law, veterinarians will now be required to obtain informed consent to treat animals, just as medical doctors are required to obtain informed consent to treat human beings.
My husband Jimmy and I were the loving owners of Buoy, an amazingly charismatic and intelligent three-year old yellow Labrador Retriever, who had become an important member of our family. Buoy was prescribed with a painkiller after knee surgery, and we were not provided with any warning whatsoever that this medication was well-known to cause serious adverse side effects, including kidney failure, in some dogs. Buoy suffered acute kidney failure as a result of taking this prescription pain killer, and, after weeks of putting him through dialysis at a specialty veterinary hospital in New York City without improvement of his kidney function, my family was devastated when we had to put Buoy to sleep.
Buoy’s Law will now fill the gap in the law that allowed that pain killer to be prescribed to Buoy without any warning of its dangers.
From the moment when Buoy’s tragic fate became clear to us in March 2013 - nine years ago - Jimmy and I began efforts to ensure that Buoy’s short life would have meaning. The most important thing to us was to raise awareness about the lack of required warnings and to attempt to ensure that no other pet would suffer the way that Buoy did. And, when Jimmy himself suffered an untimely death six years ago, I continued to march on with our fight for the enactment of Buoy’s Law. Today, I am confident that Jimmy and Buoy are smiling down on me, very proud. And, right by my side, our eight year-old daughter Ruby and my stepchildren Rachelle, Marissa and Alex have been amongst my biggest cheerleaders! Many thanks to them, and to Laura Graf, Bud Clarke, Senator Phil Boyle, Senator John Brooks, Assemblyman Steve Englebright, and Joe Agovino for your support and your roles in making this dream a reality!
Now, Buoy James Tischler (June 26, 2009 – March 2, 2013) may finally rest in peace 🙏 🐾 💕
