Dogs have much more sensitive hearing than humans. They can hear sounds four times farther away than we can and they can hear higher frequency sounds which is why fireworks are such a scary event for our pups. Some dogs are so fearful of fireworks that they will bolt when given the chance.

Please keep your dog inside!
Also ensure they have proper ID just to be extra safe. Double check all outdoor gates/fences to ensure the yard is escape-proof.

Walk your dog earlier in the day
Also try to go a little longer than usual in an effort to tire them out.

Create a Safe Haven For Your Dog
Dogs are den animals — they’re looking for that cave to get away from it all. Try setting up an area in a quiet space away from windows — such as a basement or a larger closet — so that they can’t hear or see fireworks

Play White Noise
You can try leaving a fan, TV, or radio on to help mask the sounds of the fireworks.

Calming Treats
There are different calming treats available over the counter that you could try or speak to your veterinarian for other options.

Here are a few tips to help your dog this holiday season:

> Provide your dog with ample enrichment, (including social time with you) both physical and mental stimulation. When their needs are met, they’re happier!

> Figure out a place in your home that can be a comfortable, quiet spot for your dog to rest. If they don’t already have a ‘safe space’ start practicing having them rest in such a spot this week, this will make it more comfortable for them when guests are in the home. Ensure this feels like a safe space for them, not a place they are forced to go to. Provide them with a fan or white noise to mask sounds. Provide them with some safe enrichment to enjoy while in their safe space. Ensure people, especially children, cannot access your dog in this space.

> Be mindful of signs that your dog is stressed. Some signs of being uncomfortable include panting, lip licking, ears pinning, whale eye (showing whites of eyes), laying down & showing their belly. If your dog is showing signs of being stressed with guests, remove them from the situation & ask guests not to pursue them.

> Provide your dog with decompression time after stressful events. Taking them for a sniffy walk with no rules is an excellent option!

Health benefits of curly parsley for your pup:

1. Better breath: Parsley makes a great doggy breath freshener, as it gets rid of the nasty bacteria that causes bad breath. If you want to improve your dog’s breath add a small amount of chopped curly parsley to their food every so often (approx 1 tsp/20lb of body weight).

2. Boosted immunity: Your pup might benefit from the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of parsley. Eating this herb periodically in small amounts could help your dog defend itself against life-threatening bacteria, such as salmonella and listeria. Additionally, parsley is a diuretic, making it potentially doubly effective at helping your pet flush out the bacteria that causes urinary tract infections.

3. Good cellular health: Curly parsley contains vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, and chlorophyll—antioxidants that could combat free radicals in your pet’s body, deterring cellular degeneration. Parsley also contains the essential minerals calcium, potassium, and magnesium, all of which your dog’s body requires to maintain healthy brain and muscle functions.

Please note that the only parsley that you can safely give your dog is curly parsley. Flat leaf (or Italian) parsley is known to be toxic for your pups.

Winter is fast approaching and it’s important to keep your pet’s paws safe. Your dog's feet can become dry and cracked in the colder temperatures plus their paw pads are susceptible to chemical burns from exposure to road/sidewalk salt.

A thin layer of our Protective Paw Wax will protect your dog’s paws during all outdoor adventures. It also prevents ice from collecting between their toes which can be extremely painful for your pup.🐕

Our Protective Paw Wax is a special blend of high quality, all-natural (non-toxic) waxes/oils/butters…making it completely lick safe for your pup.🐶❄️🐾

November 7th is National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day and it reminds us to stay vigilant and to check our dogs regularly so that we can potentially head off any problems before they arise.

Canine lymphoma, also known as lymphosarcoma, is one of the most common types of cancer in dogs. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph nodes and lymphatic system.

Between 20 and 24% of all tumor cases in dogs are canine lymphoma, and the disease is most common in middle aged and older pets.

Some of the most common symptoms of Lymphoma in dogs include:

-Swollen lymph nodes
-Lethargy
-Loss of appetite
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Weight loss
-Increased thirst and urination
-Swelling of the front legs or face
-Raised nodules/lesions

While lymphoma can be a serious disease, with early detection and treatment, dogs can live long happy lives. Early detection is key to treating this disease. Today is an important day to educate ourselves and create awareness about canine lymphoma 🐾❤️

Here are a couple of friendly reminders this Howl-oween🎃…

From the decorations, to the costumes, to all of the trick or treaters, Halloween is likely a stressful event for your pup. Be mindful of where your dog is in your house so that they don’t bolt through the open door when greeting trick or treaters.

We know that chocolate is toxic for our pups but so is candy/gum containing xylitol. Be sure to keep sweet treats stored safely away from your pup 🍫🍬

Have a Spooktacular Day!!👻

25/10/2023

In addition to being a good source of protein and fiber, sunflower seeds also help improve your dog’s coat and skin. They are high in essential fatty acids (free from saturated or “bad” fats). These fatty acids will help your dog have a full, shiny, healthy coat and less likely to develop skin ailments like rashes, hot spots & dry skin.

The beneficial fatty acids within sunflower seeds also encourage the body to lower the production of bad cholesterol and promote good cholesterol. This means lower blood pressure and less likelihood of heart disease or stroke. This mostly comes from a high level of Vitamin E in sunflower seeds.

Vitamin E in sunflower seeds is an important antioxidant and is essential for the formation of fat metabolism, the respiration of cells, and creating of the membranes that surround cells.

Sunflower seeds can also help relieve stress and depression in dogs. Recent studies suggest that sunflower seeds can produce a calming effect in dogs who experience anxiety. They are full of B-complex which is linked to enhancing brain activity and reducing anxiety. They are also high in tryptophan, an essential amino acid that increases serotonin in the dog's brain.

Lastly trace minerals in sunflower seeds promotes overall body health in canines. For all of these reasons ground sunflower seeds is a key ingredient in our Healthy Boost supplement!🎉🐾

Your pup can consume small amounts of sunflower seeds as long as you give them unsalted, shelled, raw/natural seeds. Please note that dogs cannot digest the shell…they can only consume the sunflower seed kernel.

If you decide to give your pup hulled, unsalted raw sunflower seeds keep in mind that small dogs can have approx. 10-20 seeds a week, while large dogs should have no more than 20-40 seeds per week. When introducing your dog to a new food it should always be done slowly to avoid any potential stomach upsets.

Co-regulation is a person's ability to regulate their nervous system through the help of another…sometimes it’s another human being, a pet or simply being in nature. Regulation is the feeling of being in the present and in control. Who better to help regulate your big emotions than your pet?

Pets offer co-regulation with complete trust. They are masters at just being. When you lay next to them, cuddle them, or notice how relaxed they look in the safety of your home your nervous system relaxes and feels safe too.

If you’re ever feeling emotionally overwhelmed, try to find time in your day to just lay with/cuddle your pet or simply watch them sleep comfortably…it will send cues of calm & safety to your body💗🐾

Dogs growl to communicate lots of different things, from fear and aggression to encouraging play. Often times we’re too quick to ignore or punish the growl…when we should really be listening and interpreting what our dogs are trying to communicate.

Always pay attention to the situation that your dog is in when they growl. You may find that your dog makes different types of growling sounds in different situations and learning to recognise the circumstance of each dog growl will help you to identify what your dog is trying to say. Those sounds may seem similar to us but it's all about context.

For instance, our dog Charlie is known to growl around other dogs as a warning that he doesn’t want to engage in play and other times he will give a warning growl if another dog approaches his food. Recently though he was unusually growly and when we really dialled in on the context we quickly learned that he was in pain. Most dogs are masterful at hiding their pain. Charlie was walking and moving normally however his growly demeanour was a clear sign of discomfort as he growled in fear when we approached the part of his body that was hurting. Thanks to his communication we had him seen to immediately and his bad back is now on the mend.

Our dog Gracie, on the other hand, gives a deep growl with a wagging tail, when she wants to engage in play. She communicates her sheer joy and excitement with a toy in her mouth accompanied by a higher pitched growl.

Our pups may not speak our language but they sure do know how to communicate their needs clearly…we just have to learn how to be better listeners 🐾
