For many of us, the emotional attachment we share with our pets is intense. However, it can sometimes blur the illness or suffering happening right in front of us. It's not done out of malice, but in order to spare ourselves having to acknowledge that the time has come to let go. To avoid this, and to do right by our pets, it's important to look at things obectively, even when it hurts. If you or a loved one is questioning your pet's quality of life, we would encourage you to take a look at this scale. It may help put things into perspective and offer you peace of mind when trying to make such an impossible decision.

Grief is hard and can hit like a ton of bricks, weeks, months, even years after a loss. Finding ways to honour our pets will help to keep their memory alive, gently guiding us through our grief .

Some things things you might consider doing:

• Write a letter to your pet expressing what the meant to you
• Plant a tree in their name
• Frame a special photo
• Paint a rock for the garden
• Print photos for an album
• Write an obituary
• Create an ornament or keepsake. BBD Etching has beautiful options. I've including a link to their FB page in the comments below.
• Have an area in your house, either inside or out, that is designated to them and where you can go and talk to them when you’re missing them most. Fill it with their belongings- blankets, beds, collars, leashes, toys, pictures, etc
• Take any opportunity to share stories about your pet
• Have a painting commissioned by a local artist. Amissa does lovely work. I've also put her link in the comments
• Write a poem
• Have a memorial service or celebration of life (with or without other people)

We all grieve in different ways, which means we cope in different ways. What’s comforting to some, may not feel right for you, but we hope this list will give you options on where to start.

A friendly reminder from our friends at Penhorn Animal Hospital.

Friends, the next few days are going to be HOT! And that means we need to be especially careful that our pets are kept cool and comfortable.

Pets can easily become overheated on hot humid days, potentially leading to heat stroke or heat exhaustion. The good news is heat stroke is often simple to prevent!

Walks or other exercise should be limited to the cool mornings or evenings. Not only will this help with overheating but it will also help prevent contact burns from very hot pavement, sand or boardwalks.

General cooling measures on a warm day (for dogs) can include a gentle swim, a bit of hose or water play ( don't overdo it if your dog gulps water), frozen or chilled treats, a cooling mat, and of course simply staying indoors with a fan or air conditioning.

But what about cats? Even though cats love the sun, most have the sense to move if they begin to be seriously overheated. Make sure your kitty has access to space with shade, a fan or air conditioning as well as cool, fresh drinking water.

As always, if your pet seems unwell or if you are concerned they may have heat stroke or heat exhaustion, veterinary care is in order. For an appointment or question call Penhorn Animal Hospital at 902-444-1644 and our staff can assist you!

It is with a heavy heart that I share news of my own dear Holly's passing. Holly crossed the rainbow bridge on Thursday morning, surrounded by love and family.

Holly was a loyal companion, a source of great joy, and an integral part of my children's lives. From a playful puppy to her mature years, we shared so many adventures. Holly's favorite place to be was in the woods.

I understand first hand the pain of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. The decision to let go is never easy, but it's a compassionate act of love to end suffering and ensure their dignity and peace.

In Holly's final moments, we were surrounded by the compassionate care and support that we strive to provide to all families facing this difficult journey. It's a reminder of the importance of empathy, understanding, and love.

To all of those who have entrusted us with the care of your friend, thank you for allowing us to be a part of their journey. We are here to support you every step of the way, just as I have been supported during this time of loss.

While Holly is no longer by my side, she will live in the hearts of my family forever. I find solace in knowing she is running forever free in the forest.

💙

There is no time limit on grief. If you're dealing with a loss, whether it happened today or 10 years ago, know that you're not alone. Our pets are a huge source of comfort, and if you no longer have that, it can be hard to cope when things get tough. Going through old photos can be therapeutic. If you're experiencing a recent loss or one in years gone by, please know you have our deepest sympathizes. We hope you find peace and healing in the days to come.

We are happy to announce that we have a new part-time veterinarian, Dr Karyn Steele, joining the Forever Loved Team.

Dr Steele is from Dartmouth and graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI in 2004. After graduation, she did an internship in Charlotte, NC. She practiced there for a couple of years before returning home to Nova Scotia.

Once home, she practiced in HRM for a few years but adventure called and she moved to Abu Dhabi and spent 2 years working at a progressive small animal veterinary hospital.

Throughout her 24+ years in veterinary medicine, she realized the importance of peaceful end of life care for precious furry family members. Although this is the most difficult time, she takes pride in providing a loving, pain free and peaceful transition.

Having had to say goodbye to so many of her own pets, she really empathizes with the pet parents and strives to make the goodbye a gentle and loving experience.

Losing a pet during the holiday season can be a very emotional event. Consider creating new traditions or rituals to honor your pet's memory during the holidays. Lighting a candle, sharing favorite memories, or even donating to an animal charity in their name can provide a sense of connection. Additionally, giving yourself permission to feel and express your emotions openly can be very healing. If the grief becomes overwhelming, seeking support from a counselor or joining a pet loss support group might be beneficial. Remember, it's okay to take things at your own pace.

Please reach out if you're in need of support resources.

Handsome Nico was given a very honorable send off in uniform.

"Nico was my K9 partner and had a very successful, 8 year career as a police service dog. He loved going to work and was the definition of loyal. Saved my butt more than once! Nico had a couple of good, well deserved years of retirement, chasing squirrels and playing with our family dog Cooper. It was fun to watch!"

Thank you for your service dear Nico🐕‍🦺💙.

Last week, dear Mater crossed the rainbow bridge. As our longest term patient, we were all invested in his journey and thankful to be a part of it. I wanted to share some words from his family about their sweet boy.

"He was the most loyal and patient family pup. Throughout his 15+ years with us he tolerated and welcomed other dogs and cats being brought home to our family and had no issue with any of them.
He loved to play ball, go on long walks and hang out in the lake at the cottage. He also loved the snow, I’ve included a pic of last week’s snow which he still wanted to go out to explore and sniff and eat . He couldn't play in it anymore, but still wanted to be out.
Mater; May 11, 2008 - Nov 8, 2023."

Rest in peace Mater 💙🌈

🌈When navigating the process of letting your other pets say goodbye to a pet being euthanized, here is some helpful advice:

1. **Assess the Situation**: Consider the individual personalities and reactions of both the pet being euthanized and the other pets. Some may be more distressed by the process, while others may benefit from saying goodbye.

2. **Create a Calm Environment**: Ensure that the euthanasia process occurs in a quiet and comfortable space, away from any potential stressors.

3. **Observe Behavior**: Allow the other pets to be present if they wish, but don't force them. Some pets may naturally gravitate towards the situation, while others might prefer to stay away.

4. **Stay Calm and Comforting**: Maintain a calm and soothing presence to help ease any anxiety the pets may be feeling. This can be reassuring for both the pet being euthanized and the other animals.

5. **Provide Closure**: After the euthanasia, give the other pets some time to observe or be near the body of their companion, if they show interest. This can help them understand the loss.

6. **Offer Support**: Pay attention to the surviving pets' behavior in the days following the euthanasia. They may exhibit signs of grief, which can include changes in appetite or behavior. Offer comfort and support during this time.

7. **Maintain Routine**: Stick to a consistent routine for the remaining pets. This can provide a sense of stability during a time of change.

8. **Monitor Grief**: If the other pets display prolonged or severe signs of grief, such as depression or refusal to eat, consult with a veterinarian or a professional animal behaviorist for guidance on helping them cope.

Remember that every pet is unique, and their reactions may vary. The key is to be attentive to their needs and provide a supportive environment during this challenging time. 💜

16/08/2023

Dr. Penny sharing her own experience on the loss of her beloved Atlas 💙.

When I said goodbye to Atlas, it was the "best" euthanasia experience I've had with my own pets. Every death and every grief is unique in its own way. He had been in kidney failure for over a year, which was already borrowed time, but he had been managing really well. One morning, he turned down his food which was unlike him. I knew kidney disease could sometimes be managed longer with fluids, depending on the stage he was in. I was luckily able to get a same day appointment with my veterinary clinic, and even more lucky that my best friend who practices there, had time to be the one to see me. She ran bloodwork and took x-rays. Not only was his kidney failure in the very end stages, he had also developed a massive bleeding tumor in his abdomen. This made the decision extremely black and white, there was really no choice but to say goodbye and say goodbye right then and there. He slowly fell asleep in my arms on the clinic floor. My partner and his best friend dog were there. I remember Cortney softly telling me that his veins were acting up and she was going to have to try a different one. I sighed with relief, knowing I had at least one more minute to hold him and smell his warm, stinky breath. He was in a totally happy and pain free state and his bothersome veins were of no bother to him.

I didn't have to agonize for weeks or even days, it was just one bad morning and over. It was more like ripping a bandaid off than decisions for other pets where I questioned myself for weeks with their slowly progressive conditions. I feel like I took the losses of those pets harder because the decisions felt so much heavier to make. Truly, we aren't ever really making this decision for them- their bodies are making this decision and we react in the kindest way we know how. I tell people all the time that it is truly the most selfless act of love to take the emotional pain of losing them upon yourself in order to relieve them of their physical or mental suffering.

When we say you are not alone, we truly mean it. All of us at Forever Loved have needed to say goodbye to furry family members at one time or another.

Lots of love to you all.
