Happy Dogust! 🐶

Our friends at are celebrating their annual DOGUST campaign to help raise awareness and funds to support pet care during the month of August. They will be collecting donations and selling products in support of improving pet’s lives through partners Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in Guelph and Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in Prince Edward Island. The DOGUST campaign raised a record-breaking $59,000 last year!

The Ontario Veterinary College has even touched the lives of animals in MHS's care over the years, truly working miracles in some of the most unimaginable scenarios. We are so happy to support our friends at Ren's in this incredible effort!

Visit a Ren's Pets near you all week long for great sales and awesome contests, and help change an animal's life in the process. ❤

Meet Sprinkles, another animal in our care. This old lady is the most easy going sweetheart around, we're so honoured to be able to share her journey with you all. ❤

Sprinkles arrived at the Sudbury, Ontario shelter on December 12th, 2022. She was in an appalling condition; her untreated diabetes was so bad she could not walk as it had affected her limbs. She was carefully treated and her glucose level improved.

She was transferred to MHS on April 26th, 2023 as the municipal shelter in Sudbury sent out a plea for assistance; they were full and could not take in any more animals. MHS answered the call and took in 3 dogs and 5 cats — all with medical and/ or behavior issues.

Sprinkles is 13.5 years old. She is a spayed domestic shorthair female. Today, her diabetes is under control and is closely monitored. She also had an undetected thyroid condition that was discovered upon her intake, and receives daily medication for her thyroid as well as twice daily insulin shots. She is also on diabetic specialty food. Her foster mom takes extremely good care of her and diligently monitors her medical issues.

She is the loveliest, sweetest little girl; so easy going and just loves attention. Sprinkles is also polydactyl!
Her paws look like mittens, which only adds to her cuteness.

It is because of your support and financial generosity that we are able to alleviate the suffering of homeless animals.

MHS is a charity partner with .gaminghouse in Mississauga and without their support, as well,  we would have not been able to help the transfer animals from Sudbury.

Another long weekend is around the corner, and that often brings fireworks! 🎆

Many pets experience anxiety as a result of fireworks and other loud noises, and reports of missing or escaped pets often sky rocket after a long weekend. Here's our checklist for firework anxiety preparedness to help keep your pet as calm and cool as can be!

1) Ensure your pet's ID tags and/or microchip are up to date in case of emergency, or a potential escape if spooked by the fireworks. This is just a good idea, regardless of time!

2) Have comfort items and favourite toys at the ready. This can look like a variety of things — pillows, blankets, a play tent, anything that your pet finds comfort in and can retreat to for a safe space.

3) Play music, white noise, or some other sort of sound to help muffle the sound of fireworks.

4) Have food and treats at the ready! Your pet may not feel brave enough to venture around the house, so having their food, water, and treats for rewarding good behavior nearby is a great idea. You can also find calming treats at your local pet store!

5) Stay home with your pet if possible, and try to create a safe room with no external walls (ie. bathroom, closet, etc) as an extra barrier to sound. With those favourite toys and comfort items in the mix, your pet may not notice the fireworks at all!

If your pet is still struggling, you may want to consult your vet for a medication based solution to help ease their firework anxiety! Most importantly, be patient and supportive with your pet — fireworks can be pretty scary! 😱🎆

And as a final note — if you plan on setting off fireworks yourself, make sure to clean up after yourself! Help protect local wildlife! 🌲🦆

✨ ADOPTABLE DOG! ✨

Meet Tanner, a 5 year old retriever mix who has been with MHS since May 2023. He was first brought into Sudbury Animal Shelter on March 1 2023 as a stray, displaying obvious signs of abuse and neglect, and clearly starving.

During his time with us at MHS, Tanner has been neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, and has received extensive medical care and training with professionals. His training has focused largely on discipline and recall, and he would benefit from a firm owner with a backyard for him to expel his excess energy and excitement. Due to his size and energy level, cats and/or small children are not recommended.

Tanner is a very smart, sweet boy, who loves all sorts of people, and really wants to play! Help us find him a forever home by sharing this post, or visiting our website for more information on how to foster or adopt animals in our care. ❤

🏡🐾 Did you know that over 60% of Canadian households consider pets family, yet many tenants with pets face rental discrimination? This leads to housing insecurity that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations

Pet-inclusive housing reduces stress, improves social connections and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals. It's time for nationwide policies that protect renters and their pets.

Use your voice to create a more inclusive and compassionate housing system in Canada! The Mississauga Humane Society has partnered with and MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith to launch petition e-5046 to the House of Commons.

Meet Maria, another animal in our care. This gentle giant has won over the hearts of so many of our volunteers and partners alike, we're so honoured to be able to share her journey with you all. ❤

Maria was transferred to MHS on April 26th, 2023 as the municipal shelter in Sudbury was full and could not accept any more animals until space was made.  Two volunteers drove up north to receive her.

Upon being picked up, she was extremely underweight, and it is thought she was used for breeding. Once the breeders were done with her, they dumped her outside in the middle of winter to fend for herself. Not only that, but her canine teeth had been broken — snapped, really — at the gum lines.

Beyond her weight and oral health, she was also dealing with a bacterial infection and cysts in all four of her paws, making her walk with a limp, digestion issues, food and seasonal allergies, ear infections, and nighttime anxiety. She was in extreme pain.

Maria has had quite the journey to health, and it is largely due to the extreme care of her loving foster parents.

After arriving to MHS, Maria was immediately put on pain killers and spayed. She has had several oral surgeries with specialists in Guelph, and will have more corrective surgery in the upcoming months.

Maria has become something of a mascot for MHS, attending many of our events with her incredible foster mama where this sweet girl receives all the love and attention she deserves.

It is because of your support and financial generosity that we are able to alleviate the suffering of homeless animals.

MHS is a charity partner with Rama Gaming House in Mississauga and without their support, as well,  we would have not been able to help the transfer animals from Sudbury.

We humbly thank all of you.

BONDED PAIR AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION ✨

Meet Sheba (short hair) and Bella (long hair), two 2.5 year old female cats transported to us from Texas. They are two sisters who have bonded very well and enjoy each other's company.

According to their foster family, Sheba enjoys cuddling up next to her humans at night, whereas Bella is much more independent — however, if Bella meows for whatever reason, Sheba is quick to seek her out and comfort her!

Both Sheba and Bella love to roam around the kitchen and will follow their humans around constantly, especially when meals are being prepared, hoping to snag a bite. They are indoor cats and show no interest in going outside the house.

Bella has been gaining confidence and growing more comfortable with her foster family, and will surely flourish in a forever home with her sister.

*Bella and Sheba are bonded and must be kept together.*

If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting these beautiful girls, visit our website at the link in our bio to fill out an adoption application today ❤🐾

Meet Pearl, one of the brave kitties in our care.

Pearl is an 11-year-old female Calico, and an absolute sweetheart. She arrived at the Sudbury, Ontario shelter on January 14th, 2023, and was transferred to MHS on April 26th, 2023. The municipal shelter in Sudbury sent out a plea for assistance as they were full and could not take in any more animals, and MHS answered the call, taking in 3 dogs and 5 cats — all with medical and/or behavioural issues. Including Pearl!

Pearl arrived in excruciating pain, with extensive wounds on her back, as well as significant fur loss. The wound looked like an enormous hard turtle shell that had grown on her entire back area, and had started to smell. After boarding at one of our partner vets in Mississauga for over a month for treatment, as well as receiving expert opinions from skin/allergy specialists in Guelph, it was determined Pearl has severe allergies.

Pearl's foster is an absolute angel. Pearl's journey has taken untold hours of volunteer time and the extreme care, with vet prescribed medication and specialty food for her allergies, averaging about $500 a month. Without them, she experienced extreme pain and discomfort.

It is because of your support and financial generosity that we are able to alleviate the suffering of homeless animals.

MHS is a charity partner with Rama Gaming House in Mississauga and without their support as well, we would have not been able to help the transfer animals from Sudbury.

We humbly thank all of you. ❤

We have an awesome story to share with you, MHS Family! Read below 👇

Scott, a teacher at Camilla Road Senior Public School, reached out to MHS about doing a fundraiser for us. His student, who we'll call N., wanted to do a fundraiser to help animals, so they emailed us and asked if they could help us.We connected and MHS was thrilled to work with Scott and his students!

Their plan was to sell homemade cookies. The wonderful lady pictured next to Scott who helps out in his class, Vita, baked hundreds upon hundreds of homemade cookies to help out, while N. and his classmates sold them to their fellow students, with one even hyping up the school for their delicious cookies on the morning announcements! 📣🍪

MHS sent 5 t-shirts so the students could wear them while selling cookies, bringing attention to the organization their initiative was helping. We also sent rescue stories and photos to share with the students!

N.'s original goal was $200.00 but he increased it to $500.00 when he learned how big our vet bills were. When the fundraiser concluded, N. had raised $560.00 for MHS! 😱🤯

MHS volunteers, — along with Maria of course! — went to the school to host a cheque presenting ceremony, providing each individual who helped out with MHS tote bags and calendars, while N. received an extra special gift for captaining the initiative. 🥰

We'd like to extend a great big thank you to Scott, Vita, N. and his classmates — and of course all the students of Camilla Road Senior Public School for bringing their empty tummies! 🤣 — for the hard work they've done, and their contribution toward the animals in our care. We were absolutely blown away by the support!

If you or anyone you know is interested in holding a fundraising initiative on behalf of MHS of your own, please visit our website for more information. Everyone can help, no matter how small or large the initiative! ❤
