Currently celebrating our 25th year, Mississauga Humane Society (MHS) is a registered non-profit, no-kill charity, founded in 1999. We have grown over the years but the mission remains the same: to save as many animals as possible.��The organization runs on the unpaid labour of an extensive network of passionate volunteers and our dedicated board members. Our volunteers rescue and foster hundreds

of cats and dogs every year in Mississauga and beyond. Having many caring foster homes enables us to work closer with our community and allows homeless dogs and cats to thrive in a home environment until they are adopted. Many of the animals we get into our care have had rough starts, behavioral issues, and their self-confidence shattered; our foster homes provide a nurturing and loving environment to build up these hurt souls to become their best selves again!�​�

Fundraising events, donations and sponsors cover essentials: food and medical expenses until the cats and dogs are placed into permanent, loving homes. Every dollar raised, every volunteer hour goes only towards the welfare of our furry friends we're always happy to hear from you.!

On the fourth day of Christmas, we say thank you to PJ's MOM and DAD for rescuing this handsome tabby 💚

"Back in 2021, we adopted John, a very beautiful grey tabby, from MHS. We got him as a friend for Stardust (aka Hope) one of the kittens from Faith and Wyatt's litter (MHS rescued the entire family... momma, dad and 4 kittens).

John, who we renamed PJ, was really shy and scared (picture #1).

We ended up moving to BC and they both came with us but he always stayed shy and a bit introverted, really only socializing with Stardust and only ever sitting with us at a distance, he never wanted to be pet.

This fall, after we came back from a short holiday, PJ completely came out of his shell, and he is now the most snuggly, social cat! He even sits with guests when they visit!

I thought you would like to hear this happy success story, maybe even to share with folks who are hesitating to adopt a shy cat! With time and patience- love conquers all! Warm wishes for the holiday season!!❤🐾

On the Third day of Christmas, we thank the incredible family who loved Nico back to health ❤🐾 Nico's leg had been horribly broken from a snap trap (which had to be amputated) and he is blind in one eye (result of abuse).

From Nico's Dad:
"When we first brought Nico home, I was really worried about it being the right fit for him. He spent his first few days trying to make himself invisible, hiding in every little crevice he could find. He'd really only venture out at night and cry, or dart under tables and chairs for cover during the day when no one was looking. He was hesitant to accept pets, but it was obvious he was secretly longing for affection when he'd lean his entire little body into your hand for pets, even while hiding in fear. With time, patience, and a little encouragement from his two new kitty siblings Gemma and Loki, Nico very quickly began to come out of his shell and learned how to be a cat again. As soon as I realised he was comfortable with us, I knew he was staying forever - we couldn't put him through the stress of rehoming him again, and most importantly, we fell in love with him.

He especially adores Gemma, who we often find grooming each other, and his disability doesn't slow him down in the slightest as he tears across the house after Gemma. When he isn't playing with his sister, he loves to toss around his favourite whale toy or otherwise spends his days lounging around in whatever comfy human bed he chooses all to himself. He's practically a different cat than the one we first brought home and the biggest snugglebug who absolutely loves kisses. I'm so glad we were able to welcome him into our family and give him another chance at life where he can be spoiled daily." ❤🐾

Thank you for providing a safe and loving "fur-ever home" to Gemma! 🐾

A few words from Gemma's adoptive Dad:
"Gemma came into my life at a very difficult time, no more than a week after my 19-year-old, childhood dog had passed away. I wasn't looking to adopt another pet so soon, but I happened to be working at Ren's Pets Heartland on the day of a Mississauga Humane Society adoption event when Gemma, aka Joie, only 11 months old and still a kitten herself — and her kittens were brought in. I immediately fell in love with her and her beautiful coat. Whenever I passed by her while working throughout the day, she'd meow at me and poke her little tongue out.

By the end of the day, she was the only unadopted cat remaining and I knew I had to do something... So she came home with me!

Gemma is my baby, just brimming with personality and energy. Her favourite thing to do is run around the apartment like a racetrack, — whether chasing her brothers or playing on her own — bouncing off furniture and obstacles in her path, while occasionally screaming the song of her people. She is SO talkative, whether it's little good morning greetings, demanding treats, yelling at her brothers, or chittering at birds. It was her sassy, smart, don't-mess-with-mamma personality that inspired her name after the character Gemma Teller-Morrow, the matriarch in Sons of Anarchy. She even got to model her good looks as the cover model of the Mississauga Humane Society 2023 calendar, which was such a blast to be part of!"

At the time, I had no idea Gemma was exactly what I needed, but everyday I am so thankful I happened to pick up that shift at Ren's Pets and meet my baby girl! ❤

Thank you for providing a safe and loving "fur-ever home" to Fireban & Fathom! 🐾

A few words shared from his adoptive Mom: "We are so happy that we adopted these two beautiful soul brothers. We love them so much. We were able to show them that they can trust and love humans again and they were able to teach me so much patience and more love than I could ever imagine.

These loving two beautiful angels of life are pure blessings. My kids and I are so happy -we are so lucky. They're just family to us, 100% family and we snuggle with them, we play with them, we treat them just like we would treat each other.

We are so blessed and we are so happy and we thank you guys so much for being there to take these beautiful animals. We are so happy that we have a forever home for them now."

Christmas is a time for giving thanks and counting our blessings! Mississauga Humane Society is an associate member of Humane Canada. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of such an esteemed animal welfare organization.

Prior to 1957, the Canadian people and organizations that sought to end animal cruelty were fragmented and isolated in their mission. A unified voice and direction were needed to influence change together. What began as the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies has evolved into Humane Canada, our federation of SPCAs and Humane Societies.

For more than 65 years, Humane Canada has united animal welfare advocates, organizations and the public with one voice. Incredibly proud of the impact they continue to have in influencing conversations, attitudes, and legislation surrounding animal welfare.

In 2022, Humane Canada was proudly recognized by Imagine Canada with their Standards Program’s prestigious Symbol of Trust. This distinction represents the highest level of excellence in nonprofit accountability, transparency, and governance.
