Meet Rocky and Comet
Their owner had a fall and broke her leg. They will need to be in care for 6 weedks. They are super sweet, medium dogs. Both neutered males and up to date on vaccines. Looking for a foster for 6 weeks. Yes, we are keeping them together.

There are so many caring animal lovers in our community. However, sometimes what feels like the right thing to do can be exactly the opposite of what an animal needs.
When someone comes across a dog, especially one that appears to be hungry, the first thought is to feed it and provide water. Unfortunately, this exact response can kill an animal.
When dogs that have not been fed regularly suddenly have free access to food and water, they can become very ill and even die.
There is something called “refeeding syndrome.” This refers to the metabolic derangements that occur with the reintroduction of food after a prolonged period of malnutrition. Basically, if not done properly it results in fluid, electrolyte and vitamin imbalances resulting in different organs of the animal including the heart and brain having negative effects. In severe cases, the animal will die.
The same holds true with water. Water intoxication or over-hydration can cause many symptoms and can result in seizures, coma, difficulties breathing and even death.
So, what should you do?
If an animal appears to be emaciated or dehydrated, they should see a veterinarian immediately.
If you choose to provide water and or food to an animal, it should be done in small increments. Basically, if a 90lb dog should receive 2 cups of kibble a day, you would start by giving no more than 1/3 of what they would normally eat. You can soak the kibble to enhance hydration. Water should also be given in small amounts. A dog 20lbs or under should have a small amount of water such as ¼ cup to start. If after ½ hour the dog has not vomited or had negative symptoms than you can repeat. This is a guideline but should not be taken as medical advice. Again, when you do not know the dog’s history you should take the animal to the vet.
To emphasis this I am going to tell you about one of our experiences in dealing with this. We took in two 5-month-old dogs that should have weighed 40lbs. They were both under 15lbs when they came in. Refeeding started with 1 tbsp of food with 1 tbsp of water mixed in. This was provided hourly for the first 24hours. It was a full month before they were on a normal feeding schedule. It took these puppies almost 3 months to catch up to what was considered a healthy weight.
The last thing that you have no knowledge of is whether or not an animal might have allergies. Like people they can have allergies to food and have similar responses such as itchiness, skin irritations, and even life-threatening responses.
If you take in a stray, please consider the above prior to providing sustenance. If unsure, don’t do anything without speaking to a vet. Most rescuers in town have probably dealt with this so don’t be afraid to ask for advice. No, we are not vets but, in a pinch, hopefully our knowledge and experience can help you choose the best course of action.
Finally, thank you for helping an animal in need.

Exciting news...he is going on a trial adoption

Meet Homie
Homie is a 6 year old Bulldog. He is neutered and utd on his vaccines. Homie has a bit of a sordid past. He was adopted many years ago. His owner ended up having substance issues and was incarcerated. The owner's family rescued him, with the help of police, from a traphouse. Homie is the sweetest soul with people. He has been around my cats and small dog without issue. However, during Homie's previous life he was attacked by other dogs. Homie is fearful of medium to large dogs. We have been working on teaching him to like other dogs but it is a process. Currently he is approximation sensitive which simply means he is nervous when other dogs come into his space. His new owner would need to be committed to continuing working with a trainer to teach him he is safe with other dogs. I believe he is capable of being around other dogs. I can tell you that all work invested in this sweetie would be well worth it. If you are interested in Homie please apply at https://murillomutts.ca/dog-adoption/

Its with a heavy heart we announce that another puppy has passed away. Momma is a good and very protective mom. We have to force her away from puppies to eliminate or she will hold it. We cannot watch 24/7 although we do have a camera in room.

With the hot weather we have been experiencing we thought we would educate you on heat stroke in dogs.
