She has trained trainers around the world how to teach their dogs to search for target odors including game birds, bed bugs, human remains, wildlife, antlers, human scent, tracking, trailing and pet dogs for sporting detection and nosework competitions with SDDA, CKC, AKC, UKC, K9 ABC Games, and CWAGS. Carla is the Past President of Sniff Alberta, and judges scent detection for CKC, UKC, Sniffing Dog Sports, K9 ABC Games, and is a Certifying Official for UKC Nosework (the second largest kennel club in the world). She has conducted Behavior Assessments for the Calgary Humane Society, onboarding junior assessors. As a Canine Good Neighbor Evaluator, she organized Alberta’s first CGN test, and has evaluated potential therapy dog prospects and pets at events such as Pet Expo. She chaired the American Brittany Club’s Performance Committee (AKC), and was appointed to the Health & Genetics Committee of the CKC. Carla has trained with the Scandinavian Working Dog Institute, Andrew Ramsey (California, USA), Karen Kroyer (Texas, USA), John Rogerson (UK), and tracked with Calgary’s Schutzhund club. It can feel awkward if you’re unsure how to behave around a service dog handler and their dog. I recommend smiling at the handler and ignoring their service dog. The handler might be too busy to notice your smile, but if they do, it could make them feel welcome or even make their day. And they’ll appreciate it if you don’t distract their working dog while it's performing a life-saving task.
Not all disabilities are visible, but service animals always have essential jobs and the right to access public places where pets aren’t allowed.
Service dogs must attend to their handler to perform their jobs properly, so please avoid approaching, petting or photographing them. So, SMILE AND IGNORE.

• By default, we’ll provide a handler-scented article. (Ask us if you want to train medical alert, nosework, NASDA, etc. and we’ll explain how to prepare your samples.)
• Mixed levels – We’ll adjust to your needs. Requests are welcome e.g. new target odor, nosework competition, troubleshooting or double blind testing.
• Beginner teams – Learn how to introduce a new target odor and build motivation for searching.

• There is only one dog in the room at a time, so that reactive dogs can succeed.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Linzi Williamson on behalf of the CAPDT, in “Evaluating and Researching the Animal-Human Interactions: An introduction to the Pawsitive Connections Lab”. One of the things I learned was that service dogs frequently provide benefits to the families and friends of their owner. While a service dog is trained specifically to perform mitigating tasks to help their owner (like interrupting nightmares for an owner with PTSD), Dr. Williamson’s research also highlighted the larger role that service dogs play in the overall support system of connecting family and close friends. Thanks Linzi, for sharing your knowledge and making many of your resources free to the public.

It's fascinating to see and hear dogs determining track direction in order to follow scent. A similar decision-making process is likely to occur in scent detection and hunting as well. In this study, The deciding phase lasted 3–5s, while the dogs sniffed at 2–5 footprints, before following the track. The fourth cat is a relatable example of a low visibility target in scent detection searches. Using olfaction, a detection dog can find the missing cat from farther away and much quicker than humans using vision. Mustang (a service dog in training) enjoyed a visit to Bass Pro yesterday. With the windchill it was -33 ° C, so our snowsuit came in handy.
Hunters Heart Mustang is an 11-week-old Brittany puppy who is available for adoption by a suitable family. He needs a job to do.

Have a happy holiday weekend! One of the ways of including your dog is to set up a scavenger hunt. Get started by letting your dog watch while you sprinkle food rewards around your yard or house. (Don’t forget to remove chocolate and breakable items from the search area, to prevent injury.) Alternately, you can hide food in a snuffle mat, Kong toy, or food puzzle. All help satisfy the dog’s need to sniff and hopefully bring joyful smiles to the spectators as well.

She has conducted Behavior Assessments for the Calgary Humane Society, onboarding junior assessors. As a Canine Good Neighbor Evaluator, she organized Alberta’s first CGN test, and has evaluated potential therapy dog prospects and pets at events such as Pet Expo. She chaired the American Brittany Club’s Performance Committee (AKC), and was appointed to the Health & Genetics Committee of the CKC. Carla has trained with the Scandinavian Working Dog Institute, Andrew Ramsey (California, USA), Karen Kroyer (Texas, USA), John Rogerson (UK), and tracked with Calgary’s Schutzhund club.
Using the same rewards-based techniques, Carla currently teaches scent detection classes at Barrett Dog Sports, Calgary. Scent detection should be fun, and set you up for success from the very first session. Carla’s proven, science-based approach helps students to understand how scent works and apply the latest research on canine olfaction to sniffer dog training. Her experience helps teams to build a solid foundation, avoid common mistakes and overcome challenges to produce reliable, fully engaged partners.
