Say hi to Maggie! 🐾

Maggie is a adoptee who arrived from Mexico 4 weeks ago. She has adjusted well in a lot of aspects but is struggling with some reactivity to new people, particularly when they interact with mom.

Our game plan:
1️⃣ DESENSITIZATION - Maggie needs more exposure to the things that scare her but in small doses. Mom knows to advocate for Maggie’s space so that she doesn’t end up in a situation where there is a true threat. Because Maggie is more reactive when people interact with mom, mom is going to arrange for some friends/family to help her out with this. Standing far enough away from the trigger, mom will reward eye contact and neutrality from Maggie.
2️⃣ FAIR CORRECTIONS - using a slip leash, mom will be able to add fair corrections for the undesirable behaviours Maggie exhibits. Remember, we are ALWAYS respecting Maggie’s space here, so nobody is coming up and petting her or actually doing anything threatening. All we are doing with the slip leash is adding a bit of leash pressure when Maggie lunges/barks at people from afar. We’re making it very clear that mom will protect Maggie and there is no need for her to react. Once a slip leash correction is issued, mom knows to add more space between the trigger and Maggie to get her back under threshold.
3️⃣ STRUCTURE - mom is going to add crate/place time before/after walks and is going to be walking Maggie in a heel for the majority of the walk. Maggie has shown that too much freedom leads to anxious, reactive behaviours... so we’re going to take away the opportunities for her to act on those anxious impulses.
4️⃣ BODY LANGUAGE and COMMUNICATION - When Maggie is reacting, mom knows to stand tall and give very little verbal feedback to her. The only feedback Maggie gets is some physical leash pressure and added movement away from the trigger. As soon as Maggie is calm, mom can add a “yes” and scatter feed/hand feed food.

Maggie is a super smart girl and mom is really keen to make sure Maggie is getting all the training she needs to be successful. Always a pleasure getting to work with clients who are so dedicated! I can’t wait to see their progress together 🥰

~~Loving Leadership~~

ANY dog can (and likely will) end up anxious if they are raised without rules, boundaries, and leadership. 🫠

Remember that even though we love and adore our “fur-babies”... they are NOT babies. As tempting as it is to coddle or baby our dogs (especially when they’re nervous or anxious) I encourage you to love them by LEADING them instead. 🤍 The kindest, most loving thing you can do for your dog is show them how to exist neutrally and calmly in the world around them.

Be a calm and confident LEADER for your dog! 🫶🏻

Say hi to little miss Mila 🐾

This adorable pup was a fast foster fail when she arrived from Mexico because she was pretty darn perfect 🤩 Inside the home, Mila is pretty cool calm collected and gets along great with her fur sibling 🐶 Outside the house though… Mila is QUITE skilled at pulling 😮‍💨 She is incredibly strong despite her size and she has done a real number on dad’s shoulder over the past few months.

We spent our session working on leash drills, structure on walks and a heel command. We switched Mila over to some different equipment to help mom and dad communicate with her in a more effective way 🫡 Mila is a fast learner and was picking up the new skills pretty quick!

Mom and dad are going to focus on duration instead of distance for the next little while, more focused on the QUALITY of the walking, not necessarily how much ground they cover.

Looking forward to our seeing Mila’s progress at our follow up session 🤗

It’s Mila and Mater! 🐶🐶

DOUBLE the fun with these two! Mom and dad wanted off leash reliability for these pups for all of their amazing camping/hiking adventures. We introduced the e-collar the same as we always do: slow and steady! Whenever we’re teaching something new in a multi-dog household, we want to work with the dogs individually first. Adding the e-collar was no different... so we split each session into Mila time and Mater time. Both dogs learned the language of the e-collar pretty quickly after the first session! 🫡

Our second session focused on using the e-collar on walks to hold each dog accountable to a HEEL command. This was a challenge at first but has proven to be such a game changer!! The e-collar has given mom the ability to communicate with Mila and Mater in a language they truly understand, all without adding emotion 👏🏼 A simple tap + “no” can address leash biting, budding reactivity, and pulling.

It has been SUCH a joy getting to work with this awesome trio and I can’t wait to see Mila and Mater’s worlds continue to open up as they solidify their e-collar training. Reliable off leash freedom is on the horizon! 🤗

Say hi to Mosaic!

This handsome boy has a very solid foundation but struggles with sporadic reactivity, particularly towards nemesis dogs in the building and things on wheels 💥🛹

Mom and dad already had a Mini Educator, but they weren’t feeling confident in how to use it for Mosaic’s reactivity. We did a session where we re-introduced the e-collar low level stim. Mosaic is a super smart boy and picked up on what we were putting down right away! 🤓 We layered the e-collar in for recall and then added in some distractions. We also covered a tap + “leave it” combo. Timed properly, this combo can be super helpful in de-escalating before getting to a full blown reactive spiral! 🌀

Mom sent me updates in the weeks after our session and has been having some great success 🤗 Go Mosaic go!

Learning should be a lifelong kinda thing 🤓 And when it’s this fun, who wouldn’t want to keep learning?! It was an honour and a privilege to attend seminar in Woodinville this weekend. Such a welcoming, fun, supportive environment to learn in!

There is always more to learn, and I think the moment you start thinking you know everything is the moment you limit yourself and stop growing. Dog training is not just about the dogs, it’s about empowering owners and equipping them with the skills they need to allow their dogs to flourish. Weekends like this allow me to expand my dog training “tool box”, feel more confident, and keep my passion alive! 🐾

Follow-up session with little miss Windy 🥰

I continue to be so impressed by this family! Windy’s owners have really realistic goals for her and it is such a pleasure getting to be a part of this journey with them.

We worked on loose leash walking drills and some intentional desensitization during our session. 🤓 Windy’s reactions are more random than they were originally- some dogs she doesn’t mind, while others she reacts to (which is super normal!) We talked about the power of HEEL when on walks. We want to have Windy walking in the “safe bubble” right beside her handler. She doesn’t get to be the first line of defense walking ahead of mom or dad; she needs to have a following position which will lead to a calmer mindset 😌

Essentially, we want to add a lot of change-ups to the walk so that Windy doesn’t know what’s next. Fast/slow, left/right, go/stop... we want Windy looking to mom and dad for direction of “what’s next” instead of making her own choices.

Can’t wait to see Windy’s world continue to open up as she gains more confidence 🐶🫶🏼

It’s Luckie! 🐶

Luckie is a 1 year old mini aussie shepherd with some very typical working breed mannerisms that are becoming problematic in his home 😬 These problems (nipping, overexcitability, reactivity, etc.) are not at all uncommon, especially for working breeds trying to live in urban settings... but of course they are very stressful for a dog owner! 😓

Things we have covered to date:
- STRUCTURE inside the home (leash indoors, crate training, boundaries etc.)
- Feeding the BREED NEED (flirt pole, intentional play, etc.)
- Increasing food and play drive so that we can utilize those in our training going forward
- MANAGEMENT for when guests come over (crate time, leash, no talk/touch/eye contact, focusing on neutrality)

In addition to all of the above, I’ve recommended no more doggy daycare or dog parks and have encouraged a focus on neutrality around other dogs, rather than overstimulating socialization. 🧘🏽

The GOAL: We want to slowwww Luckie’s world down, add structure so that he doesn’t have opportunities to make bad decisions, and give Luckie lots of outlets to express his genetic needs appropriately.

Looking forward to our next session where we can put these foundational basics to work 💪🏼

Say hi to a very soggy Oscar 🌧

We had another general obedience session yesterday and I was SO impressed by Oscar’s progress! This guy has gone from pulling like a sled dog to having a loose leash and pretty darn good engagement with mom and dad 👏🏼 BIG shoutout to Oscar’s parents who have really been putting in the work with him. As always, we started making changes inside the home first, which subsequently led to big changes outside!

We spent our session shaping Oscar’s “heel” command and working on recall with distractions.

Mom and dad used treats to shape the heel command originally (which is great!), but it was becoming evident that Oscar was getting too amped up by the food AND would only heel if he thought he would get a treat. We have graduated to removing food from this command and adding a “no” + directional change if Oscar leaves the heel position. As soon as he is back in the heel position, he gets a calm “yes” and they keep on walkin’ 🐾

Other ways to increase engagement and enforce a heel command:
1️⃣ Adjust speed - fast or slow, heel is still the expectation!
2️⃣ Inside turns or figure-eight walking drills
3️⃣ Implied sit / go-go-stop

For recall, we discussed and practiced the 3 D’s of proofing commands (Distance, Duration, Distraction). Mom and dad know exactly what they need to do to proof Oscar’s recall and they know that he is not “off-leash ready” until he passes every single test, every single time (with the security of a longline!) 💪🏼

Now regular attendees at my Neutrality Pack Walks, I’m so excited to see Oscar continue to shine! 🥰

I had the pleasure of meeting GOOSE on the weekend 🪿🥹

Goose is a total cutie pie but one heck of a puller! Being a strong boy with some dog-based excitement manifesting itself as leash reactivity, mom and dad understandably wanted to nip this in the bud!

We talked about:
➡️ Structure in the home before leaving on a walk (waiting for permission to go through doorways/down stairs)
➡️ Variable rewards on walks and marking good behaviours with a clear “yes!”
➡️ Switching over to a Starmark Plastic Pinch Collar (we saw huge changes right away, which was so great! 👏🏻) and incorporating directional changes and leash drills to encourage engagement on walks.
➡️ Giving Goose LESS leash on walks. He hasn’t earned 6-feet of freedom, so he shouldn’t be given the option.
➡️ The art of doing nothing - working on Goose’s neutrality around other dogs

This sweet boy is set up to succeed with his awesome family and I can’t wait to see how he thrives 🪿

18/04/2024

Cutie pie Lu had his second session last week! Clearly very stressed by this whole training thing (not 😂), Lu enjoyed some shameless belly rubs part way through.

Lu’s family is working on his selective reactivity around other dogs. They saw HUGE improvements after introducing the plastic pinch collar- so much that they decided to brave a few different environments with Lu lately. Lu was a champ at a coffee shop patio (yay!) but struggled at a baseball game where there were lots of other dogs present. Lu was pretty content until he had the opportunity to greet some other dogs, and then he lost his cool and caused a scene 🙈

We discussed trigger stacking (car ride, new park, balls being thrown, lots of new people, sounds, and dogs). What sometimes seems like a “random” reaction to us humans is actually the result of small triggers accumulating to the point of the final explosion 💥

We discussed the importance of NEUTRALITY around other dogs and not allowing Lu to interact in these settings. We introduced a PLACE command during our session and practiced in their home. Once this is super solid, I want mom and dad to proof the command by adding distance, duration, and distraction in. “Place” will travel with them to the baseball field and this command will be Lu’s job while he’s there. Neutrality will be the focus in these settings. Game plan: Place for an inning > nice structured walk around the field > Place for the next inning... repeat 🫡

Looking forward to seeing Lu’s progress at our next session! 🐾

16/04/2024

Ever heard the saying “biology loads the gun, environment fires it”? Well, it’s true 💁🏽‍♀️

Every dog has a unique genetic makeup that predisposes them to certain behaviours and temperaments. Every dog is born with traits (“nature” 🧬) that their environment either increases or decreases over time (“nurture” 🏠).

If your dog’s environment has no structure or boundaries and there is no clear sense of “yes” and “no” in their lives, the genetically predisposed characteristics will escalate into problem behaviours (jumping up, mouthiness, nipping, demand barking, reactivity, resource guarding, etc.) 🥵

I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but STRUCTURE is so so so important! Know the breed/genetic characteristics you are working with and then incorporate structure and boundaries to prevent those characteristics from spiraling out of control. 🫡

FEED your dog’s BREED NEED in other aspects too! Give your dog outlets for those genetic needs (herding, sniffing, hunting, guarding) so that their innate needs are met 🍃 If your dog is genetically programmed to work- give them a job! “Unemployed” dogs often become very hard to live with... so don’t put yourself or your dog in that position 🫶🏼

Say hi to Duck! 🦆

I had the pleasure of meeting this adoptee yesterday. Duck is an absolute angel pup with his parents, however he has some pretty intense fear-based reactivity when other people come into his home 💥 We spent our session talking about management in these scenarios- because our top priorities are keeping everyone safe and respecting Duck’s boundaries, all while showing Duck that there’s nothing to be afraid of.

So, in the spirit of MANAGEMENT, here are some tips for all the “stranger danger” doggo owners out there:
1️⃣ MEET your guests OUTSIDE first! Have your dog on leash and wearing a properly fitted basket muzzle and have the first introduction be on neutral territory. Tell your guests to avoid all talk, touch, and eye contact with your dog (they just need to pretend your dog doesn’t exist!)
2️⃣ DON’T let your dog “check ID’s” at the door. Take your dog into the house and have them tethered on place or safely inside their crate before the guests enter the house.
3️⃣ Keep a LEASH ON and give your dog limited freedom on it (aka they don’t get the full 6-feet of leash!)
4️⃣ MUZZLE TRAINING! Desensitize your dog to a basket muzzle well before guests come over. Your dog should associate the muzzle with treats and exciting activities, not punishment.
5️⃣ ADVOCATE for your dog’s space within your home. If your dog is on place or in a crate, make sure they are in a quiet corner away from foot traffic. Ask your guests to continue to ignore your dog with the exception of throwing the occasional treat in their direction (if they want), with zero expectations in return.

Prove yourself as a calm, confident leader by showing your dog that nobody will invade their space. Over time, your dog will learn that they are safe even when guests come over 😇

Following the above tactics, we had a very successful session with Duck with very few reactions- all because we had safety measures in place and mom and dad advocated for Duck’s space 🐾 Can’t wait to see how this boy improves over time (and I know he will!) 🤗

It’s Oscar! 👋

This happy, exuberant boy is your classic golden. He’s super chill 80% of the time but then is ALL excitement when it comes to walks and social situations. Oscar is foundationally a very good boy with a wonderful temperament; we are just working on calming down the crazy in those super exciting moments. To do this, mom and dad are going to be tightening up some structure inside the home and are going to be working on engagement drills whenever they can!

Biggest takeaways:
1️⃣ PLACE time in house multiple times a day (and intentionally adding distractions to proof this command, because without distractions, Oscar is happy to just snooze… so we need to make this a JOB that Oscar has to put in the work for). Oscar should be on place before/after meals and before/after walks for some structured rest time 💤
2️⃣ Hand feeding and making Oscar work for at least half of each meal. Nothing comes for free- we want engagement and accountability regularly! 🫡
3️⃣ Structure sandwich on walks! Mom and dad are going to start and finish each walk with engagement drills and some long line recall practice, rewarding highly!

Mom and dad are wanting to stick with a harness for now (which is totally fine!), so we switched from a back attachment harness to a front attachment EasyWalk so we have a bit clearer communication and are discouraging pulling like a sled dog 🤓

Oscar and fam are regular attendees at pack walks (yay!) and are putting in all the hard work to make sure his leash skills are in tip top shape. Looking forward to our next session!! 🐶

Say hi to Lu! 👋

Lu, a adoptee, arrived from Mexico before Christmas. In a lot of aspects, he was a “unicorn” rescue pup— great with people, great with being handled, and had pretty darn good house manners 😇

Not uncommon for rescue pups, a few behavioural speed bumps surfaced after Lu got settled in. Sure enough, Lu had some leash reactivity and struggled with separation anxiety. 💥

Our game plan:

🐾 increase structure! particularly when it comes to leaving the house for a walk, Lu is in an excited, overstimulated mindset before even leaving the building. We are going to add place time and practicing “wait” at thresholds. #1 rule is we don’t leave the house until we are in a calm state of mind. 🧘
🐾 having tried multiple harnesses on their own and finding little success, we switched Lu over to a Starmark Plastic Pinch Collar and saw some pretty quick changes! Reactions were still present, but Lu’s recovery time was much faster afterwards. That’s a great first step towards a calmer mindset! 😌 Pairing this new tool with lots of daily intentional desensitization and counter conditioning, our hope is to re-wire how Lu processes his environment while on leash.
🐾 reconditioning crate training! Lu is struggling with some separation anxiety when he has free roaming of the house and he also paces anxiously and barks in the car. We are going to re-introduce the crate in a super positive way to make this Lu’s “safe space”— a nice den that he can hang out in when the humans go out or when Lu travels in the car 🚗

Looking forward to our next session where we will fine tune all of the above 👆🤗

Saturday session with WINDY! 🥹

This one was emotional, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the most heart wrenching session I’ve had since starting training. 🥺

Windy was a rescue who arrived 5 months ago. Her background was traumatic and she endured abuse that no dog should ever have to go through. The visible scars on her body will forever be a reminder of what she went through before she was rescued. 😭 It should go without saying that this pup deserves empathy and compassion in every single aspect of her journey, especially in her ongoing training.

I do not say this lightly, Windy ended up with THE BEST humans! 🤍 Windy has struggled with sound-triggered epilepsy since she arrived in Vancouver. Pair that with some pretty explosive leash reactivity and we have a tough case. Mom and dad have been warriors throughout all the ups and downs; they tried multiple trainers before me (one purely positive and one not-so balanced) and have been so patient while waiting for Windy’s anti-anxiety meds to take full effect. This has been a marathon not a sprint, that’s for sure! 🥵

What we saw during our session on Saturday was honestly breathtaking. For the first time in almost 3 months, Windy went for a walk outside their building... and she did AMAZING! 🤗 We switched to a collar that allowed for clearer communication and we practiced walking with confidence past triggers. Windy’s reactions were minimal and she recovered much faster than ever before. Mom and dad truly couldn’t believe how successful the walk was, and I was lucky enough to get to witness this monumental day 🥹

I give all the credit to Windy’s parents for this success and I can’t wait to be a part of their continued journey. Windy’s world is going to continue to open up for her and I couldn’t be more excited 🥲

Handsome Houston had his second e-collar session last week and we made it all about FUN! 🤩

Houston is a pretty suspicious guy, so we’re taking extra time to make sure the e-collar is introduced in a way that works best for him and his parents. What does that look like? ↩

🐾 We did 1 week of stim set at 0 so that Houston got used to doing the exercises and hearing the subtle click of the remote button being pushed. Because the stim was at 0, Houston couldn’t associate the click with anything other than food rewards 🤤
🐾 The majority of our second session used TONE (beeping sound) and a chipper “Houston come!” to break fixation and encourage movement, rather than low level stim. We used the tone button to interrupt Houston’s fixation on other dogs on the field and then recalled him to get him to walk it off.
🐾 We introduced super low level stim (2) to shape Houston’s “heel” command. We also switched from a back attachment harness to a plastic pinch collar for extra clarity, and Houston ROCKED it!! 😇
🐾 Every obedience command was followed by PLAY- so we would do one “heel” and then throw a ball and say “break”! After a quick play, we used tone to recall him off of the ball before throwing it again. This kept the session super light and fun, which really worked wonders for Houston 👏🏼

As always, I train the dog that is in front of me. There is no “one size fits all” for e-collar conditioning. 🤓 For Houston, we are switching things up a bit to make sure that he doesn’t grow suspicious of the e-collar and to ensure that this is a smooth transition for him. Mom and dad have been very patient and it will surely pay off 🤗

Say hi to Houston 👋 who had his introductory e-collar session yesterday!

This cutie pie is the goodest boy 90% of the time, but that 10% of unpredictably is what causes his parents a lot of anxiety (understandably so!) Being a working breed, this boy needs to RUN… but without off-leash reliability, this isn’t a safe option for him.

Houston and fam are PERFECT candidates for the e-collar and I’m so excited to see how their world opens up once Houston is fully e-collar trained 🤗

Per usual for a conditioning session, we introduced LOW level e-collar stim by pairing it with commands Houston already knows (sit, place, come). Low level stim is applied as we say the command and removed as soon as the command has been completed (aka teaching Houston how to turn OFF e-collar pressure: by complying!) 🤓

Mom and dad’s homework is to get lots of reps in daily so that Houston fully learns this new language. We will check back in at our 2-week follow up session! ☺️

It’s KAITO! 👋🏼

Kaito (previously “Benito) is a Adoptee who arrived in November. He was a bit of a unicorn doggo right off the bat with no significant behavioural concerns 🦄

We LOVE when adopters want to do everything possible to make their pups the best dogs they can be! So even though Kaito doesn’t have any major “issues”, his mama wants to work on impulse control, excitability on leash, and obedience. 🤓

We spent our session going over:
➡️ Increasing structure in the home
➡️ Introducing leash pressure and showing Kaito how to turn it off (using a snug Martingale collar)
➡️ Basic obedience commands and how to hold Kaito accountable to things he knows (and pretends he doesn’t) 😜
➡️ Daily desensitization to the things that get him extra excited!

This cutie pie is sure to flourish with his dedicated mama by his side! 🥰

It was our 4th session with miss Olive 🫒, who has grown into such a little lady!!

In true puppy fashion, Olive is changing constantly! Just when mum and dad work through certain behaviours, new challenges and exciting things pop up that give us more to work on. 🤪 I can't stress enough how critical it is to be training your puppy every.step.of.the.way! Huge kudos to these amazing pawrents who are so dedicated to making sure Olive gets all the training she needs to set her up for success once she reaches adolescence and adulthood!

The latest challenge that Olive has thrown mum and dad's way is some lunging and excited behaviour on leash towards other dogs. She is also VERY jumpy when greeting new people, which ain't cute. 🙅🏽 Having no success on a back attachment harness, we switched Olive over to a slip leash. With a few gentle but clear corrections, we saw immediate changes in Olives behaviours and way more attentiveness to her handler 👏🏼

Mum and dad know the drill now:
❌ Undesirable behaviours receive a clear correction
✅ Desirable behaviours are heavily rewarded (verbal praise, high value treats)

This is such a clear way to show a puppy how we WANT them to behave 🐕 Setting the foundation for our expectations during puppyhood is critical to achieving the coveted well-mannered adolescent/adult doggo!

Looking forward to our next session with this awesome fam 🤗
