The 3 baby kestrels( nicknamed the mousekateers)we received a few weeks ago are all grown up. They have passed flight school and hunting school and will be released in the upcoming days back to the wild. As cute as these babies are the best place for these guys is out in the wild where they will help the wild population of kestrels who are in decline. We wish these little guys all the best in their wild life. Riverside would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who donated to their care and food expenses. .

Up close with one of are animal ambassadors. This is Kricket the America kestrel. Kricket just recently turned 1 year old. You can see in this photo that her feathers on her head are changing from a dark orange to a beautiful grey blue colour. She is moulting from her juvenile plumage to her adult plumage. Birds will moult once a year replacing every single feather on their bodies. .

Baby season is upon us. Riverside Raptor Responded to a call today about a young owlet which was a young barred owl that had fallen out of his nest. Upon arrival mom and dad where very aware of us and keeping a close eye on there little baby. After a clean bill of health this guy was determined to be a brancher meaning he's to big for his nest. this guy will stay with mom and dad where he will have the best chance at a wild life. He was set up with a temporary nest to keep him off the ground and safe from predators.

Kricket our female American Kestrel is enjoying a yummy treat of super-worms. Insects are an essential part of a kestrels diet. Kricket is also going through a natural process that birds do which is called moulting, this is when they drop and regrow all the feathers on their body. You can see Kricket is missing a few feathers and growing some new ones in.

A huge thank you the village of Coldwater BIA for hosting this past weekend. It was a great chance to talk with people about birds of prey and pose for photos with our Raptor ambassadors Kricket and Forest. Our efforts were supported with several donations from and many other attendees. These funds go to help feed and house the raptors in our care as they prepare to reengage a wild life. Liz Simpson photos.

This Beautiful girl came to today for some convalescence and assessment. She is an adult Broadwinged hawk. These hawks prey on a number of small animals, but frogs play a huge part in their diet. With any luck, In just a few weeks, she will be joining her kind for one of autumns spectacular displays as groups( called “kettles”) of Broadwings migrate in in massive vortex of soaring raptors. Heading to places where frogs aren’t covered with three feet of snow! At intake she looks ready to go. I’m confident she will be able to join her kind very soon.

It’s time for me to introduce you all to Forest. He is a Great Horned owl bred in captivity for the purpose of education with regards to raptor conservation initiatives. He has never known a wild life and lacks the skills to survive the rigours of the wild. Instead, he will be working along with us at events, libraries, and schools to foster a greater understanding of theses magnificent creatures, and their importance in the biodiversity of this province.
* Note: We would of course never subject any of our wild foster patients to this kind of public life. In fact, it’s our mission to separate them from human influence as they convalesce back to the wild where they came from.

As with any endeavour to care for wild animals donations play a huge role in what we can do. Please consider giving if you can to our program. The birds in our care very much need this help to get them back into the wild.

Ok let’s try this. Instead of constantly begging for financial support for something I choose to do, I’m going to make some of my original artworks available to offset the costs involved in the foster care and housing of the raptors in our care. For those who don’t know me personally, I make my living as a book and magazine illustrator. Birds of Prey have always held a particularly special place in my portfolio.
This 9.5”x9.5”original India ink drawing was completed on Saturday July 15th afternoon and will be available for sale until Wednesday July 19th at noon for the price of $75 ( first one to private message me gets it delivered unframed to their address.) This particular piece was inspired by our fledgling Merlins that are currently testing their newly developed skills on every flying object. Soon enough maybe bobolinks will have reason to fear them, but not quite yet.

American kestrel orphan to be fostered here This one is a male as indicated by this red back feathers that are emerging. He is yet another found after a storm downed their tree that housed them in a cavity. Kestrels, like most falcons do not build nests. They utilities already existing platforms to raise their young. Kestrels depend on cavities in trees. It seems like we are being over run with babies again this year ,but experience has taught us that it’s only a matter of weeks and they will be all on their way to a wild life.

This beautiful young bald eagle came to us last autum for foster care and convalescence. After several months of skills learning, I am happy to announce that he has been successfully returned back to a wild life where he so richly belongs. BUT… it doesn’t end there. Several weeks after his release, I was just notified of a hatch year eagle that may require similar care and support. So strap in here we go again.
