🦉 Ontario Owl Alert: Eastern Screech Owls Struggling Due to Deep Snow! ❄️
Have you noticed more owls in your neighborhood or while out on a winter trail? Especially smaller ones like the Eastern Screech Owl? These beautiful creatures are facing a tough time this winter due to deep snow that’s making it difficult for them to hunt and find prey. As a result, they may be more visible and active during the day or in areas they wouldn't typically be.
🦉 Why is this happening?
The deep snow covers their usual hunting grounds, making it harder for these owls to catch small prey. As a result, they might be visible in more populated areas, looking for food.
🦉What should you do if you encounter an owl?
If you spot an owl that seems lethargic, disoriented, or too close to people, it might be in distress. Please contact a local wildlife rehabber who can assess the owl’s condition and provide the care it needs to get back to health.
📞 How to help:
• Avoid handling the owl yourself.
• Do not feed or offer water to the owl
• Contact a wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife rescue organization in Ontario.
• Take note of the location if you're able to, to help rescuers find it quickly.
Let’s all keep an eye out for these incredible creatures and give them a helping hand this winter! ❄️

Last week Riverside Raptors was called out to a barred owl that was seen on the side of the road up in Bala. The owl was a suspected to have been hit by a car. The owl was quickly assessed and determined to have some internal injuries to his eye and head. He was sent to the owl foundation for further evaluation. We were updated later that day that this guy is suspected to make a full recovery. However he will undergo surgery to remove his permanently damaged eye. Owls can survive with one eye out in the wild as they don’t use their eyesight to hunt but rather their incredible hearing ability. Wishing this guy a speedy recovery.
