I’m opening up a couple of spots for groundwork lessons with my sweetest baby horse, Willie Nelson, at Weeping Pines Farm 🩵

I’ve been spending the summer with two of the very best horsemen I know - Danique Henderson, and Craig Johnston - and I would love to share some of what I have learned with all of you ✨💭🤍

Willie Nelson is actually the coolest little brown/black pony around and he would love to share some of his knowledge with you! If you’re new to groundwork, or you want to start stepping up your game, he’s your guy.

If this is something that interests you, please don’t hesitate to message me for more information/pricing/etc 😄 Or, you can send me a text @ (902) 393-5106

I’m also offering some travel lessons (with your own ponies) in PEI this weekend only. I’d love to help you get the kinks worked out, so that you can start having fun with your pony this summer ☀️🤍👌🏻💭✨

if i could give you a piece of advice to help not only you, your farrier, and your horses - it would be to handle your horses feet REGULARLY 🤍

set your horse up for success - pick them up, throw ropes on them, teach them to come off rope pressure and to lead by their feet, teach them not to panic when they get their legs caught up on something.

horses that have never had there feet handled regularly are dangerous; and more than that - the older they get - the harder it is to teach them not to panic.

take willie nelson for example ⬇️

i’ve been handling his feet regularly since the day i met him (1 month old).

he’s been taught to pick them up every which way, he’s had his feet roped and he’s been taught to lead by his front and back feet.

he had never seen a pair of hobbles before last night. after slowly introducing him to the feeling, i let him sit with them and think about what was happening. i sat there hoping that he would use his brain and think through the pressure that was applied to his legs.

he did. he attempted to walk forward once and paw twice, but quickly realized what had happened and chose to stand still and sleep.

when horses are given the opportunity to succeed …. they usually do 🤍✨🫶🏻

a little client horse spotlight 🌸🤍

i took bear on at the end of october for weekly groundwork sessions to work out some problems he was giving his kid.

he liked to bite, rear, kick out, run you over, he was food aggressive, and he would run away from any and all pressure that was applied.

after a few inconsistent months (he had about a month off for medical reasons), he has become a really pleasant boy to be around.

💭 he’s still mouthy - but in a totally acceptable way.

💭 he has learned that thinking through pressure is a much more reasonable response than kicking, rearing, running you over or just plain running through it.

💭 he’s working through the last bit of his aggression around food, which mostly left on its own after expectations were raised and he was shown what was acceptable and what wasn’t.

💭 he’s getting soft, and thoughtful, and careful. all things i’m starting to really love about this little horse 🫶🏻💕✨

duncan 💛

he’s had about 3 weeks of consistent handling - and has gone from very lightly halter broke to a very good, soft, and responsive gentleman 🤍

he’s soft off halter pressure, yields his hindquarters, getting soft in the back up, started on flexing, and started on some sending exercises.

but my favourite part?

he’s gone from hard to catch, to actively seeking me out.

he’s got a great brain and it’s all wrapped up in this big adorable package - how could you not love him??💛

wanna know what my favourite thing is about willie nelson?

he’s the combination of every horse i’ve ever loved.

over the last decade - every single horse i’ve loved in one way or another has allowed me to find this one horse that shares all of those same qualities

i see cow pony’s personableness.

i see john deere’s goofy side.

i see potatoes patience and immediate trust in people.

i see essex’s ability to make me feel safe, always.

i see maverick in his eyes. those big, beautiful, brown and blue eyes 🤍

sure, there’s dozens of horses i’ve loved before willie. and there will be dozens after. but he is a projection of every single horse i have ever had the privilege of knowing and adoring, wrapped up in one perfect little - mildly difficult - package.

she’s one of those special ones 🫶🏻

little annie mae has been coming into the barn for her handling sessions - accepting rubs all over her face at liberty, getting used to the halter around her nose/jowls, and working our way to her neck and ears.

she’s even coming up to me in the big field for head rubs, which is huuuuge for her.

really loving how sensitive and willing she is 🌸

this little horse tried his big ol’ heart out for me this weekend 🤍

we worked our butts off, we laughed, we made mistakes, and most importantly - he had a great first experience and i’m so glad i got to be part of it 🫶🏻

my favourite part? he stood quietly ALL DAY and when he was scared, he quietly let me guide him and put all of his trust into me 🌸

love love love him 🤍

Day #1 was a huge success for Willie Nelson and I 🤍✨🌸

He came out this morning for his turn in the outdoor and he couldn’t have been any better if he tried. He tried his heart out for me, and we worked through some kinks (mainly me 🙈), and remained confident, soft, and thoughtful in a new environment with new horses.

After everyone left for the evening, I brought Willie out for his first ever off property ride for ride #21 and I can’t even find the words for how exceptional this young horse is.

He came out and worked exceptionally well at the walk/jog/lope, working off leg beautifully in figure 8’s all while having a beautiful stop and back off just my seat and legs. He side passed up the wall both directions, and even side passed in the middle of the arena for the very first time. He moved his hips and shoulders very well as well.

This little horse comes out and smashes through every expectation i’ve ever had for him and I couldn’t be more proud of him.

Day 2, here we come 🤍✨💗🌸

trailer loading doesn’t have to be a bad word 🤍🌸✨👑👇🏻

willie nelson’s last time in the trailer was less than ideal - it got quickly out of hand and it ended up with him having a HORRIBLE loading experience and a ton of added stress for him 😞 today was the first time he’s seen a trailer in well over a month and he hesitated the first 2-3 times and i ended up having to work him for 5 minutes outside of the trailer, but he quickly relearned that rest = trailer and he happily strutted into the trailer to hangout with me and get some alfalfa pellets in return! we loaded about 15-20 times with small breaks in between and then i let him rest in the barn for half an hour, and then i loaded him 5 more times and he never missed a beat 🤩🌸👑

ride #12 and first ride in a snaffle 🌸🤍

i opted to wait to switch to a snaffle until he could confidently move out into a walk/jog/lope so that in the case of spooking or some other incident, he wouldn’t have to deal with the bit hitting his teeth, which would have easily shattered his confidence!

he was mildly confused, but he worked hard and opted to look to me for help rather than brace against it, which i LOVE 🤍

best guy ever 🤍🌸🤍

the best boy 💗✨👀

first real ride in the outdoor arena - he was so good minded, even with the tractor going, and we rode around walk/jog/lope for about 20-25 minutes.

he has started to come off my leg a little bit, as well as starting to yield his hindquarters and forequarters! he also got to experience baby roller spurs for the first time tonight and he acted like he had seen them 100x 💗💗

that’ll do, baby horse.

that’ll do. ✨🌸💕🥹
