Comment which order you think the horses eat these 3 bales.

As interested horse carers, we pay attention to what our horses are eating. After feeding hay to horses every day for years, we think we can look at hay and know its quality.

With the unpredictable weather in spring and summer 2024 in Southern Ontario, our local farmer produced a variety of hay. We have tested the hay for the nutrient values and are feeding it jambalaya style in the Hay OptiMizer to ensure balanced forage intake.

But their preference surprised us and several other experienced horse people we surveyed. It’s important to test your horse’s hay to ensure they are getting appropriate nutrition. Your eyes can’t tell. So which hay would you choose for your horses?

The OptiMizer InStall can be filled in seconds and hold enough hay to provide your horse with access to forage for over 24 hours.

You can feel at ease knowing that your horse will not be without forage while stalled. Save yourself time by filling the InStall once a day so you don’t have to continually toss a flake or fill a hay bag.

You’re free to worry about something else now 😉

The Hay OptiMizer was designed with a number of important elements included. Among them, ease of use ranked very high on the list of priorities.

Not only can the Hay OptiMizer be filled with 150lbs of hay in under a minute, but it can also be easily moved around by one person.

When the paddock is getting torn up around the hay feeder, move your Hay OptiMizer out of the mud. When moving your horses to a different paddock, take the Hay OptiMizer along too. When you are cutting grass or dragging the fields, take the slow hay feeder out of the way.

There are many reasons why you would want to move your horse’s slow hay feeder. The Hay OptiMizer comes with handles to make it even easier.

Using the Hay OptiMizer saves hay. Your horse’s hay will last longer and not get wasted. There is no hay on the ground getting blown away, soiled, or trampled and wasted. The fastest filling hay feeder for horses ensures that less than 1% of your horse’s hay gets wasted.

How much would that save you?

How long does it take to fill slow feeders for your horse’s stall? With the OptiMizer InStall, you can cut this time to just seconds. Flip the lid open with one hand. The net moves out of the way with the swing bar. Fill the InStall with about 25lbs of hay. Swing the bar back over and the net follows. Secure the latch. It’s simple and takes seconds. No more wrestling with hay bags.

You’ll have to find another way to fill your time.

At this time of year, rain can spoil your horse’s hay quickly. Keep your horse’s hay clean, dry, and out of the mud with the Paddock Hay OptiMizer.

Don’t waste hay. Save your money. Give your horse clean, fresh hay to nibble on day and night. Keep the hay contained inside the hay feeder. Slow down your horse’s consumption with the slow feed netting. Get peace of mind knowing that your horse is protecting their health by keeping their digestive tract moving naturally.

It’s well known that horses need to consume about 2% of their body weight in forage daily. Best practice is using a slow feeding system like the Hay OptiMizer to ensure that your horse properly nibbles and chews their hay, ensuring it lasts all day. Protecting horses from gastric issues like ulcers and colic by imitating natural equine feeding behaviour.

But what if the horse is overweight? It is our instinct to reduce the amount of food they consume but it’s the wrong choice for horses. The overweight horse still needs 1.5% at minimum of its weight in forage. The best way to address a weight problem in horses is to ensure that their hay is low in sugars and carbohydrates. Feed them the health food version of hay rather than the fast food version.

Match your show colours. Match your barn. Match a different colour to each horse. It’s up to you.

Do you know how much hay is in a “flake”? Sorry to tell you but a flake is not a measurement. The amount of hay in each flake varies so drastically that it could never be used as a consistent measurement.

Do you know what determines the amount of hay in a flake? The speed of the tractor when the hay is being baled in the field. No consideration for how much your horse needs.

Truthfully, your horse needs about 2% of their body weight in dry forage per day for a healthy digestive system. For the average 1000lb horse that’s 20lbs of hay! The only way to know that your horse is getting enough to maintain their health is to weigh it.

What height would work best for your horse?

The OptiMizer InStall can be mounted at any height. That allows you to customize your horse’s feeding position. No more twisted neck and back. Your horse can stand comfortably in a natural position that works best for them. Ensure that your horse has a rested body in the morning without any stress or strain while slow feeding.

Is your horse tall or tends to paw while eating? Mount the OptiMizer higher. Do you have a pony or like your horse to eat at grazing height? Mount the OptiMizer directly on the floor.

It’s up to you and your horse.

Do you know how much hay you’re feeding? Is it enough? If their pasture is eaten down, are they getting supplemental forage?

Your horse needs to consume about 2% of its body weight in quality forage to maintain their condition. This is calculated in dry matter (I just learned this!). Flakes are not an accurate measurement since their weight can vary significantly. If your horse isn’t getting enough forage they can lose conditioning and have significant health issues like ulcers and even colic. A slow feeder can help make that ration last longer to keep your horse chewing and protect their digestive tract.

This is also true in the summer months. Because pasture has so much water (about 75% or so), your horse needs to consume even more than 2% of their body weight. So if your pastures are overgrazed, your horse may not be getting enough forage and probably needs supplemental hay.

It’s a myth! Slow feeding is not hard on your horse’s mouth.

Tom Thumb is a Gypsy Vanner, with hair to spare, who lives in southern Ontario Canada. Half the year he slow feeds exclusively from a Hay OptiMizer. The other half of the year he is on pasture.

When Tom is slow feeding from the Hay OptiMizer, he grows this glorious moustache. The OptiNet is so soft and gentle that it doesn’t rub on his mouth in any way.

While grazing from pasture, Tom’s ‘stache is worn off with abrasion and he goes bare-faced. Simply foraging pasture rubs his moustache right off.

That’s the evidence for you. Slow feeding from a Hay OptiMizer is more gentle on a horse’s mouth than pasture. Myth busted!

With the flash thunderstorms we are seeing here in Southern Ontario, the drainage holes in our Hay OptiMizers are saving our hay. Some areas have had a month’s worth of rain in 4 hours. It’s flooding out culverts and causing washouts everywhere.

But our hay is saved in the Hay OptiMizer. Contained up off the ground out of the puddles and mud. So our hay isn’t wasted and we know our horses still have hay available.

Hay fed on the ground gets wasted. It blows away. Horses stomp and soil it. Or it gets mixed in with sand and can cause serious health problems.

The Hay OptiMizer keeps hay contained, dry, clean, and off the ground to ensure it isn’t wasted.

Slow Feeding. Quick Filling.

The OptiMizer combines the best of slow feed netting with the convenience of a multi-bale feeder, so you can get peace of mind knowing you always have hay available for your horses. First invented in 2004, the re-designed OptiMizer launched in 2019.
