We rescued and planted about 50 native strawberry plants this year. Anyone who has tasted a wild strawberry will tell you they are small in size, but mighty in flavour.

Flavour that makes you rethink the strawberryness of any strawberry flavour you've tasted.

Flavour that makes you want to quit your job and spend your days chasing the wild strawberry harvest.

Flavour that makes you want to eat every single perfect berry yourself, but also share them with everyone you've ever met in your life.

Seed saving is an intensely gratifying and practical activity.

It's also some of the best nature bathing you can do because it forces you to really notice and be present with all the little details of the plants.

Please enjoy this yarrow seed ASMR for your eyes and ears.

If you like this sort of thing, join our club. It's free. Forever.

Shout out to all the members and volunteers who came out this summer! Rain, wind, hot, cold, and mosquitoes, you showed up and we are so grateful for your time, your energy, and your friendship.

Together, we are building something that has not been done for over a hundred years in Calgary. We are the first community group to get permission to showcase how a vacant lot proposed for a potential future school can be converted into an abundant ecosystem full of people and plants.

Let's do this!

Stop and eat the flowers.

Thanks to for sourcing these sites for the public to come and forage. These native plants have made their way to Lot 01!

After being watered regularly to help them establish well in their new home, they are now tucked into a blanket of snow for winter.

During this first season we have spent a lot of time on site observing birds.

So. Many. Birds!

Gulls, Geese, Magpies, Crows, Hawks, Pigeons, Robins, Sparrows, and at least one Heron!

They love our little plateau to rest in, to nibble at the grass, to pick through our mulch for insects to snack on, to drop some nitrogen for our soil, and to just stop and check out what we're up to and say hello.

It's been a treat to be connected with so many flying friends. Even in the 'burbs, biodiversity is flying around right in our faces.

Are you the sort of person who looks at empty or underused spaces around Calgary and thinks to yourself: "Why?" Do you find yourself wishing there were more ways you could get involved in making Calgary resilient and beautiful?

On May 3, join Jack, co-founder of Vacant Lots Farm Club, for a Jane's Walk as we tour around Country Hills Village Pond, ending up at our new community farm location. Along the way we'll discuss the different opportunities that empty spaces present, through a nature based lens. From tiny little patches, to acres of park, you'll learn to look at your surroundings in a new way. Once we arrive at Vacant Lots Farm Club we will be discussing therapeutic horticulture, which is a fancy term for growing food and flowers that make you feel good. We will then do a short land observation activity to demonstrate how tuning into our surroundings is a powerful tool.

Operated by the Federation of Calgary Communities, Jane’s Walk is a global festival of walking tours that celebrates the life and work of urban activist Jane Jacobs. Whether you’re interested in local history or ecology, suburban neighbourhoods or inner city, they've got something for everyone of all ages.

Adults who exercise outdoors feel more energized, happier and less stressed than those who exercise indoors.

Compared with exercising indoors, exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalization and positive engagement, decreases in tension, confusion, anger, and depression, and increased energy.

"Does Participating in Physical Activity in Outdoor Natural Environments Have a Greater Effect on Physical and Mental Wellbeing than Physical Activity Indoors?"
