My Grandfather's Cat Helping seniors and terminally ill people feed and arrange second forever homes for their pets in Canada

My Grandfather's Cat was inspired by our founder's experience adopting her grandfather's cat, Mackenzie, who gained more than 500k followers on TikTok and Instagram for being grumpy and going on adventures. She founded the organization on May 18, 2021, her grandfather's birthday.

Alumni Update 🤍

When a senior passed away, his beloved cat, Bailey, was in need of a second forever home. His dear friends and neighbours, James and Sarah, promised to care for Bailey and they did just that. They immediately took him into their home, and even though he didn't get along with their cats or children, he was safe with them.

A few weeks later, they heard of a charity that had recently launched only three months prior called My Grandfather's Cat and decided to take a chance to see if they could find Bailey a second forever home.

They began working with one of our first volunteers, Vivian, to find Bailey a home where he could thrive. The couple was kind and patient with us as we interviewed applicants. They spoke to each applicant, but when they met Diane, they knew she was the perfect person to adopt Bailey.

More than three years later, Bailey is still thriving with Diane. They are the very best of friends, creating loving memories together and enjoying every minute of it.

"I love this boy. It's 3 1/2 years later, and handsome Bailey and I so love our time together."

As we celebrate our 300th adoption, we can't help but think how it would have never been possible if kind humans like Sarah, James and Diane didn't take a chance on our organization. Thank you to everyone who believed in us from our 10th adoption to our 300th. We couldn't have accomplished any of this without you.

We love hearing stories from people around the world who have been inspired to adopt cats because of us 🤍

From stories of those who have adopted seniors' cats, to those who were inspired by Mackenzie to adopt a senior cat from a shelter, it makes our hearts so happy to hear that our work is making an impact beyond our wildest dreams. Thank you for giving these sweet cats the second forever homes they deserve ✨

New Adoptable ✨

Meet Breezy! As her senior human is moving to a retirement home, this beautiful girl is in need of a second forever home.

Breezy is a 9 year old tabby who is known for being an easy-going gal. She is a sweet girl who is eager to share her love and thrives on a daily routine.

Breezy loves her human and spending the day with her. After a long day, she loves to curl up in her bed. She likes to sleep on her humans feet and keep her toes warm and cozy. She loves her routine but will let her human sleep in. She is also known for keeping her litterbox in absolute pristine condition.

Location: London, Ontario
Availability: Immediately

Breezy's ideal home would be where she can be the only cat. She is shy around children and hasn’t had experience with dogs. She would thrive in a home where she can be the main star of the show, and someone who likes daily routine.

One Year of our Pet Pantry 🐾

When we learned seniors were applying for our rehoming service simply because they were struggling to afford to feed their pets with the rising cost of food, we decided to create our second initiative, My Grandmother's Pet Pantry.

In its first year, this program helped 75 low-income seniors by shipping $200 worth of pet food and supplies directly to their doors, providing more than 160 cats and dogs across Canada with food.

Thanks to the generosity of this community, we are thrilled to announce we are expanding the program to help more than 150 seniors next year.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this new chapter of MGC a success. This program was lovingly named after by grandmother, a compassionate animal lover who would open her pantry to anyone in need. This program embodies her kindness and generosity, and I'm so honoured to be celebrating it's first anniversary today on her birthday.

All my love,
Angela

New Adoptable ✨

Meet Baby! As her senior human has passed away, this sweet, loving girl is in need of a second forever home.

Baby is a 9-year-old gal with the most stunning green eyes and little pink nose. She was adopted by her senior human as a kitten and spent her entire life in a seniors building, so it’s no surprise that she loves a quiet life and spending time with seniors.

Baby likes to spend her days with her human. She loves to chat with her human, nap on the couch in the afternoon, and mix in a stroll in the fenced-in yard on sunny days. She is a fancy lady who likes to indulge in her favourite snack, cheesies, and she loves to drink water directly from the tap.

Location: Georgetown, Ontario
Availability: Immediately

🏡 When Baby’s human passed away, she moved in with her human’s daughter, but she doesn’t thrive in a loud environment with other animals. She is ideally looking for a quiet home where she is the only pet. She does have experience with older children, as long as they are a little more on the quiet side.

Success Story 🤍

When a senior lady was hospitalized and could no longer return home, her caring social worker was tasked with surrendering her beloved cats, Charlie and Toby, to a shelter. The social worker knew how loved they were and that they wouldn’t do well in a shelter, so she decided to go to her clients' home daily to care for them and contacted My Grandfather’s Cat for help.

She began working with our volunteer, Melanie, to find these sweet boys a second forever home in the Toronto area. Melanie had previously interviewed a couple named Barb and Merv for another adoptable and knew they were looking for a bonded pair, so she reached out to the couple to see if they’d be interested.

As soon as Barb and Merv saw the photos of the boys, they were in. After speaking with both Melanie and the social worker, they were chosen to be their second forever family. This was just weeks before Christmas, so Barb and Merv set up two cat beds under the tree as they waited to pick up Charlie and Toby.

As Barb and Merv were preparing their home, Charlie and Toby’s human passed away in hospital. The social worker was able to let her family know that the boys were going to a loving second forever home, giving them comfort amidst their grief.

Now, two months later, Charlie and Toby are thriving in their new home.

“The boys are doing really well. Each day brings a new first. They are very affectionate and love playing with their toys. We are very happy to have such sweet cats and give them lots of love. We are looking forward to the future with our two sweet boys. They have certainly added some spice to our quiet retired lives. Thank you to My Grandfather’s Cat and all its wonderful volunteers for helping us make this all possible.”

We’d like to say a special thank you to Natalie, the incredible social worker who went beyond her call of duty to care for her client and these sweet boys. We’re so grateful for humans like you.

URGENT: As his human has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, this beautoful boy is in need of a second forever home.

Meet Caleb! He is the sweetest, most loving 8-year-old boy who loves to be loved and is the perfect only child.

Caleb simply adores his human. He loves to spend the day with her, watching her do dishes and curling up beside her for belly rubs. He is just happy to be spending time in the same room as her. When he isn’t with his human, he loves to look out the window and drink his water as he watches the world go by.

While Caleb loves his human, he likes his options at bedtime. Some nights he likes to sleeping in the bed, while others he likes to quietly tear into his toybox to leave his cherished homemade mouse toys out for you to find in the morning. He will definitely let you know when it is breakfast time by hopping up on the bed to nudge you awake.

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Availability: Immediately

🏡 Caleb is an indoor cat looking for a home without other pets or small children. He is best suited for a quiet home with humans who prefer to be home as much as possible. He can be a little skittish around new people, so he will need a family who is patient with him as he adjusts.

If you are interested in Caleb, please email [email protected] with the subject line CALEB

Success Story 🤍

Lucy was brought to her veterinarian to be temporarily boarded while her senior human moved into a care home. During the move, her human’s health declined rapidly and she wasn’t able to bring her beloved cat Lucy with her.

As family members were not able to adopt her, an incredible staff member named Kelly decided to temporarily foster Lucy and contact MGC to help.

The team began working with our volunteer, Sara, to find Lucy a second forever home in Mississauga, Ontario. Her beautiful features and classic calico ways were irresistible, so applications began to come in. After both Sara, Kelly and a veterinarian interviewed the applicants, they decided Naomi was the perfect person to adopt her.

“I picked up Lucy from Kelly on Friday night and wanted to let you know that she is settling in well. She seems very calm and is seeking lots of attention — we're really enjoying getting to know one another!”

Many veterinarians and their teams go beyond the call of duty for their patients. They often help rehome animals, foster their patients and have even gone as far as adopt their patients. Thank you to Kelly, Meaghan and the entire team at McCleary Animal Hospital for going above and beyond for Lucy. We are so grateful for people like you.

New Adoptable ✨

Meet the sweet and playful Ella! As her human has unexpectedly passed away, this little lady is in need of a second forever home.

Ella is a 5-year-old brown and black tabby who is very active and loves to play with balls, her mouse, and anything small that she can bat around. She is very smart and clever girl who likes to scoop food out of her bowl with her paws, which is quite fun and entertaining to watch!

Ella loves gazing out the window on her perch and has recently started watching bird TV. She is independent and can be alone for the day, but she likes to be pet and will snuggle up with you on the couch after a long day.

Location: Welland, Ontario
Availability: Immediately

🏡 Ella is looking for a human who is as active as she is and would love to play with her. She would do best with a home without other animals or young children.

Meet Sadie! This sweet girl is looking for her second forever home after her senior human has moved into a care home.

Sadie is an 11-year-old gal with Russian Blue colouring. This beautiful girl was adopted as a kitten and has only ever lived with her human.

She enjoys affection and will let you know when she wants attention, but has a limit on how many pets she will allow. When she’s in the mood to socialize, she will purr softly and gently rub against your leg. She loves spending her days by a window, watching birds and people go by. She also enjoys sitting on cushy chairs or any elevated spot that lets her perch. In the evenings, she likes to play with her favourite toy mouse and catnip pillow.

Location: Victoria, British Columbia
Availability: Immediately

🏡 Sadie is looking for a home without young children, as loud noises and quick movements can startle her. She is likely to thrive as the only pet in a calm, quiet household. Independent by nature, she is well-suited to a home with working adults, as she is comfortable being alone during the day. She has a suspected wheat allergy, so she has always been fed wheat-free kibble and has never had any issues.

It took three years, a community of 200k people and one incredible volunteer team — but today I am thrilled to announce that MGC has found 300 second forever homes 🤍

When I started this charity, I never could have imagined how many milestones we’d celebrate so quickly — and it’s all because of you.

You chose to adopt through us, you chose to donate to support our work, and you continue to share every post to help cats find homes. Your kindness is MGC exists and I'm so grateful for you.

These milestones wouldn’t be possible without our incredible team. Thank you to our adoption volunteers, volunteer veterinarians, IT volunteers, board of directors and my parents for making everything we do possible.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing me and making My Grandfather’s Cat a reality.

All my love,
Angela

URGENT: Picasso and Zoey are in urgent need of a second forever home as their senior human has been hospitalized. Help us by sharing their post 🤍🎨

Meet Picasso and Zoey! As their senior human can no longer care for them, these sweet siblings are in need of a second forever home.

Picasso and Zoey are the definition of opposites attract. While they love each other, their personalities couldn’t be more different.

Picasso is a 15-16 year old boy who is known for being an absolute love bug who adores being the centre of attention. He loves to sit on his humans chest and receive as many pets as you’re willing to give him. He will give you face rubs and follow you from room to room. He loves attention and will always let you know when he wants more pets.

Meanwhile, Zoey is a 14-15 year old independent fluffy calico gal. She always wants to be with her human, but not right beside them. She likes to sit on the adjacent couch while her brother soaks up all the love from their human. While she loves to cozy up in a closet, basket or a box, her favourite thing to do is play. She loves wand toys and is lighting fast on her feet.

Location: Montreal, Quebec
Availability: Immediately

🏡 Picasso and Zoey are ideally looking for a home together without other animals or children. That way Picasso can soak up all the love, and Zoey can continue to hog all the toys.

Ember is a 9 year-old long-haired calico girl who has been with her senior human since she was just eight weeks old. She gets her name from the beautiful ember colour in her long, luxurious fur.

She demonstrates the appropriate amount of calico energy — she enjoys a daily routine, independence and snuggles. She will choose the appropriate time for attention, but when she does, she is an extreme cuddlebug who will even sleep on top of her human, usually all night long.

Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Availability: Immediately

🏡 Ember would do best in a quiet home without children or other animals. Ember is a sensitive girl, so she will take some time to warm up but will be your best friend once she does.

Sweet Snoopy is still available for adoption. Help us share her post so we can find her second forever home 🤍

Meet Snoopy! As her beloved senior human transitions from her current pet-friendly retirement home into advanced care, Snoopy is looking for a loving second forever home.

Snoopy is a beautiful 13-year-old gal with a serene and independent personality. She loves curling up in a cozy chair with her person during a relaxing evening of TV. In her daily routine, Snoopy enjoys finding soft, quiet nooks to nap in — whether it’s a cozy closet, a comfy chair, or a sunny patch of floor. While she might bat around a toy now and then, she much prefers to lounge and relax.

Snoopy’s quiet and low-maintenance nature makes her the perfect companion for someone looking for a relaxed and easygoing feline friend. She doesn’t ask for much — just a calm environment, a cozy place to nap, and a kind human to share her days with.
