Q: What’s the Most Frequent Issue I Get Contacted To Help With

A: I primarily get contacted to help with dogs that have big, loud, intense feelings that their guardians need help understanding. They’re also my favourite types of behaviour cases - dogs that need a little bit of support to truly thrive.

If you have a barky, lungey dog and would like to hear more about how to help them, DM me with "Reactive Dog", and I'll send you the link to my free 3 part course on Taming Your Dog's Reactivity.

Have you ever been uncomfortable? Didn't enjoy some people at work, or a social situation? Wanted to take some time to process information before having to answer or perform some task?
It's normal to have those feelings, and normal to expect others to have those feelings. We hope for support when we feel that way, and we try to be understanding when friends or family need similar support.

So why do we hold dogs to a different standard?
Why are we so quick to label them as defiant, stubborn, lazy, difficult, dramatic?

Why do we expect them to be comfortable in every situation, tolerate being touched by everyone at any time, get frustrated if they don't get along with every one or every dog they meet. And how dare they communicate discomfort... in the only way they know how?

It doesn't have to be a struggle. Seeking to understand the function behind their actions (which is not the same thing as judging or labelling) brings whole new lens to your dog's actions AND helps improve behaviour. Our dogs deserve Training with Compassion!

Q: Did I cause my dog's reactivity by taking him to the dog park?

A: Reactivity can be one of the hardest behaviours a dog guardian can deal with, and it can be so easy - and frustrating, to go down the rabbit hole of why or how our reactive dogs got that way, and yet we may truly never know.

Yes, dog parks can be overwhelming to some dogs, but reactivity can develop due to a number of variables including but not limited to:
- previous stressful or fearful experiences
- stress during the mother dog's pregnancy
- genetics
- physical health, including undiagnosed health issues, pain etc.
- under socialization
- single event learning
- generalize fear and anxiety
- physical environment
- breed specific characteristics
- previous training and learning history

Please don't beat yourself up over how or why your dog can be reactive. Being gentle with yourself and your dog, as you learn how to best navigate and support them is what's most important.

Your Reactive Dog's Behaviour Is Normal!

That's right - normal! Barking, lunging and growling are a normal escalation of communication for a dog that is in a situation they can't handle.

But those big loud, scary, and unsafe signals aren't the only ones your dog uses. They have much smaller subtler ways of communicating that are easy to miss if you don't know what to look for. And, because we've been trained to use obedience to solve everything that bothers us about our dogs - we try to slap that in place like a bandaid and don't bother to address the underlying feelings that led to the behaviour in the first place.

Then we might wonder why they can sit for one dog passing by... but not the second or third. "They know sit! Why can't they just do it?"

Because "sit" is not the problem. Training with compassion means truly seeking to understand your dog's behaviour, not judging, labelling and then suppressing it.

Curious about more effective dog training that combines training with compassion? I talk more about this in my email newsletter, and on my free webinar for Taming Leash Reactivity. You can grab both links in my bio.

Do you have to trick your dog to groom them?

While it may work in the short term, there can be potential fall out from continually tricking your dog into situations that make them uncomfortable.
This might include
- your dog starting to be less tolerant of these situations/handling once tricked
- reluctant to come to you when you need them to (in various situations)
- starting to ignore or refuse treats or food when offered
- less eager to engage with you for training

This happens because when you trick your dog, you are eroding their trust in you. Which is the opposite of what you need when you're trying to take care of their health, hygiene and wellbeing.

Yes, there are situations that cannot be avoided, there are truly an urgent need - in which case you may wish to consider having a professional groomer or your vet to handle the matter for you, potentially under situational medication, so as not to further negatively impact your dog.

The time, effort and commitment you put into cooperative care with your dog will pay off exponentially throughout their lives, and can help make even emergency situations, that much less stressful for your dog and for you.

Not sure where to start? There are a couple of spots left in foundations of cooperative care class starting Thursday at 6pm. If you're even slightly curious, drop me a comment/question, I'd love for you to join us!

"We have taken a couple of virtual courses with Tasha - Less Stress Nail Care and Fit Fun Focus - and both have been excellent. Tasha really understands dog behaviour and communication, and she also does a great job of supporting and teaching her human students. From the first time we worked on our skills in class, it was clear that she was carefully observing both of us so that she could give me nuanced feedback and help us learn.

Working with Tasha, I always feel supported and understood, not judged, and as a guardian of a dog with big feelings, this is such a relief. If you're looking for humane, effective training, with someone who genuinely cares about the well-being of her students at both ends of the leash, I cannot recommend Tasha & Fearless Tails enough!"

If you're curious about my virtual classes and how they work, just ask! I can tell you that they are not a "spectator sport", you'll be working with your dog live, on camera with step by step coaching at your dog's pace. There's no pressure to keep up with everyone else. During the week you'll receive the feedback you'll need to keep you progressing and supported.

"She just mouths the brush" or "He just growls but doesn't bite" - are things I hear often from guardians of dogs who are uncomfortable with being handled for grooming or vet care.

Too often these signals are chalked up to "wanting to play" or being "dramatic", but it's actually your dog trying to tell you they are uncomfortable, pushing on can result in dangerous escalations when your dog feels they have no choice.

Learning what your dog is trying to communicate while also teaching them how to cooperate with you is a much safer and more compassionate approach. Learn how in our upcoming class starting August 1st.

What if there was another way other than "forcing them to get it done"?

What if you could teach your dog to opt in as an active participant in their care?

Cooperative Care training is specific type of training to help prepare dogs for routine care and procedures "in a manner that decreases anxiety and increases emotional comfort and trust." Deb Jones, author of Seven Steps to Stress Free-Husbandry.

I've had one dog who would literally fall asleep during brushing, blow drying and nail filing, and one dog who used to be dangerous to groom, but now pops up on the grooming table when it's time for a haircut, and tilts his head to the correct side when it's time to brush his teeth. The approach I used for both of them is cooperative care.

Curious to learn more? I'm in the middle of drafting a guide on cooperative care that I'll be sharing free. Want it dropped to your inbox as soon as it's ready? Sign up for my newsletter (in bio) and you'll get it first!

The first step in helping your dog be more cooperative?

Shifting our mind set and resisting the urge to "just get it done", like something we have to check off our to do lists.

But pushing through does not help your dog learn more cooperation and confidence. Instead:
- Working at your dog’s pace - which is usually slower than what we expect
- Trust is critical: when your dog signals discomfort, you must stop.
- Resist the urge to lure them back to continue. Using food to make your dog do something they are uncomfortable with is not the same as cooperation or comfort.

Yes this takes time, but the payoffs will last your dog's life time, and result in less stress for both of you.

Does your dog struggle with routine care? What do you to help them?
Would you like support in shifting your dog's response to vet visits and routine care like nail trims?

"When a flower doesn't bloom, we fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower itself" ~ Alexander der Heijer

When plants don't thrive or bloom the way we hoped, we adjust our approach to meet its natural needs and try to improve the environment so that it can thrive.
When we see environments that aren't conducive to human learning, we don't think twice about improving the school, the equipment, the environment, the teachers.

Yet when dogs don't behave as we might like, too often the insistence and sole focus that there is something *wrong* with the dog that needs to be "fixed".
Why does our "best friend's" ideal environment get less consideration than a house plant?

Behavioural modification training must include a review and adjustments to create an environment and situation in which your dog can thrive. Often that means changing routines, our expectations, adjustments to their physical environment, but it can also mean attending to the full spectrum of their natural needs, beyond food and water.

When we take this approach to dog training, not only do we enhance our dog's wellbeing, we also see improvements in their behaviour.

Do you agree?

July is whizzing past, and we are so grateful to be a capacity for both training, play & learn and pet sitting!

I shared at the beginning of the year that one of the Fearless Tails goals for this year is to take care of ourselves so that we have the energy and focus to be able to serve our clients, manage the business and spend time family and friends.

So, while it's tempting to just slide in one more session, one more booking - we are pressing pause on new bookings for July. Existing bookings will not be affected. New clients will be invited to join us at the end of July and into August.

But I still want to help, so watch this space for free training resources, tips and tricks and answers to some Q&A!

How prepared are you, really?

This is a must listen.

Emergencies like fires, floods, power outages, storms - they just seem to be getting more frequent - and closer to home. Some of my clients were recently affected, and it prompted one of them to ask if we could have a discussion on preparing for emergencies with pets.

Thanks to two wonderful trainers, Camilla (Behaviours in Training) and Samantha (Puppy Power), we had an informative and insightful with my Level Up Members.

I can promise that you will finish this recording with a short list of things to prepare for your pets, and will even feel better once you've accomplished them.

Participants in the discussion left knowing
- which personal, property and pet documents to have, including a few you probably don't have
- what you probably don't keep in your bedroom - but it could make a huge difference if you needed to get your pet out quickly
- essentials to have in case of an emergency
- what to know if you have to find emergency accommodation
- skills that would help your pet in the event of an emergency
and so so much more!

Do yourself a favour, grab this free recording, listen to it, and take action!

Here's a few short reminders thanks to Fear Free Pets

How many times do we know the names of the dogs we follow on social, but not much about the people behind the pictures?

Let’s get to know each other a bit better, shall we?

5 things about me
- the first animals I trained were gerbils (although it might have been small turtles)
- I’ve lived in Canada, the Philippines and Indonesia
- when I’m stressed I have nightmares about highschool math exams or being trapped in out of control cars
- I’d choose smoked salmon over bacon
- two years ago I moved my business to Prince Edward County, travelling back and forth to Mississauga, but we just moved to live in the area full time!

I’d love to hear something about you, tell me something I don’t know about you - the human behind the dog!

Feeling hot and crabby? Your dog might be too!

While you're probably already planning earlier or later walks, and indoor brain games for your dog during this heat dome, keep in mind that hot temperatures can affect your dog's behaviour in many ways, including making them less tolerant to triggers and stressful experiences.

So if your dog seems a little more edgy, more distracted, less focused or irritable this week, practice compassion over compliance - and keep cool!

3 things NOT to do when your dog has separation anxiety

1. Punish your dog for expressing their distress.
barking, howling, crying, pacing, destructive behaviours, peeing or p**ping in the house, are all signs of a dog that is experiencing panic and fear. Recommendations from well meaning individuals suggesting using an e-collar, playing startling sounds, locking the dog in a room; none of these are appropriate or humane, nor will will they teach your dog confidence in being alone - which is the root of the the problem.

2. Get a second dog to fix your first dog
It can be tempting to get another dog to keep your separation anxiety dog company. Press pause on that! Your dog may be struggling because YOU are not there, adding second dog may not change that. At worst, the new dog may also develop issues because of the anxiety of your first dog. Resolve your dog's separation anxiety first, then add a 2nd dog if that's in your plan.

3. Assume it's a phase
If you suspect your dog has mild separation anxiety, take action sooner rather than later. It's much easier to take baby steps to change behaviour than it is to try to change months or years of separation anxiety (and by that time you're often already fed up). There are certified separation anxiety behaviour consultants (I'm one!), excellent books by Julie Naismith and Marlena De Martini, low cost options for training and many more resources for humane, ethical separation anxiety training.

A gentle reminder ahead of the Victoria Day fireworks... 📣🎆

That the stress and fear that comes with fireworks can affect dogs for days afterwards.

👉 Your dog may bark more at sights and sounds

👉 Your dog may be more vigilant (it’s worth saying that even if your dog is lying down, it doesn’t mean they are relaxed!)

👉 Or the opposite, they may find it really hard to settle

Your dog needs time to recover… and we don’t get a say on how long that takes.

What can we do?

We can help them get there sooner by understanding the signs of stress, and being patient, kind and proactive by downloading my free fireworks /sounds ebook 👇
