Easter can be a fun time for everyone, including our pets, but there are some hazards that pet owners should be aware of:
1. Easter Flowers & Bouquets: Some plants and flowers commonly used during Easter can be harmful to pets. For example, Easter lilies are toxic to cats and can cause acute kidney failure. Other plants like Cyclamen and Amaryllis can also pose risks to both dogs and cats.
2. Easter Basket Hazards: Typical Easter baskets may contain items that are harmful to pets. For instance, chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs. Also, certain sweets and desserts may contain Xylitol, a common sweetener that can cause hypoglycemia and seizures.
Plastic Easter Grass. Pets cannot absorb plastic Easter grass into their bodies, so it can become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract and wreak havoc if consumed.
3. Easter Feast Hazards: Sharing some of the Easter feast with pets can be tempting, but certain foods like onion, garlic, poultry bones, grapes, and macadamia nuts can pose serious threats. Also, dogs and cats can develop digestive issues if they consume excessively fatty foods.
4. Easter Toys: Small Easter toys can be a choking hazard for pets.
