ALL ABOUT BERLIN 🦴
Our bags are packed and Berlin is heading on an adventure to a farm! We'll be spending the day in a new location but with people he has met and likes. He was a very good boy during the drive and laid in his crate the whole time.

Berlin has proven to take to change fairly well. He would make a great road trip buddy and would love trips to a trailer or cottage. He is dog friendly but needs time to warm up to strangers sometimes. Check out the link below for more information on Berlin!

Sometimes it feels pointless giving white dogs a bath as they're dirty again the same day. Especially when we have as many here as we do and they play and get filthy. That being said, doesn't Tortellini just look adorable in the tub?

EURO CITIES LITTER

What does a typical day look like for a 5 week old puppy?

Wake up around 8am and mom goes out for a p*e. Puppies have started to get food this week, but just for fun, socialization and training sake. When our foster mom comes in she says "break" and tosses us a handful of kibble to scavenge out of our bed. This not only starts to charge a "language," but also helps to differentiate the bed and potty area.

At lunch time mom goes out for another potty break and we get another handful of kibble.

Foster mom makes sure our water bowl is full throughout the day and changes out our puppy pads as needed. Fun fact, at this age we go through approximately 10 puppy pads a day, however by next week that may more than double. This means a box of puppy pads will only last ~1 week.

At dinner time mom goes out for a potty break and we get another handful of kibble and again hear that magic word "break." Foster mom tries to give us each pets and snuggles while we are scavenging.

Sometimes foster mom brings in the tiny human and she loves to give us kibbles and hugs. We aren't so sure about the hugs yet, but foster mom reminds the tiny human to be gentle.

Once the tiny humans go to bed we get to spend some one on one time with our foster mom. She picks us each up, trims our nails (weekly) or just holds us. We get one last handful of kibble before bed and then we get to go to bed and start all over again the next day.

Rumour has it this week our living space is expanding as we get introduced to litter training. This will help with potty training as we get older!

A well-socialized puppy creates a behaved, relaxed, safer dog. If your puppy is comfortable in a wider variety of situations, they’re less likely to use aggression in moments of fear. Not socializing your puppy can lead to dangerous situations in the future.

Bring your Puppy in on Tuesday to socialize and learn healthy play!

Your Puppy will spend the day socializing in our indoor 800 square foot daycare/training area, with frequent adventures outdoors including our great new Barking Lot space, weather permitting.

Our daycare is structured in a way that we make sure to advocate for insecure dogs, correct bullies and focus on healthy play.

JASPER

We had a bit of a scare and thought that our handsome boy had popped his hip back out, but having consulted with our vets they said so long as he doesn't seem painful, keep him crate rested and we can re-evaluate with more x-rays in the near future. It's a catch 22 because it he hasn't redislocated it, taking him out of the crate could cause him to dislocate it, but if he did dislocate it again, he will need surgery. Let's just cross our fingers he didn't dislocate it again and that he continues to remain comfortable. If you'd like to contribute towards his care or read more about his story, please visit the GoFundMe below.

As you've likely noticed, we've been MIA for quite some time. There are a multitude of reasons including the 2 human babies we had which have filled our hearts but have also have taken up our "spare" time and the really depressing rescue world that has resulted from the pandemic.

The babies are great and as we touch our toes back into the water on social media I'm sure we will share a lot more of them.

The dogs are also great, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't lost some passion. We experienced some unexplained health issues with our Irie x Bear breeding in 2020 and as a result we repeated the breeding in 2022. Unfortunately our worst fears happened and the unexplained health issues popped up again, despite having done all available health testing. Needless to say, that is when we disappeared. I rehomed Charmander (now Tyson) to an amazing home who was on my waitlist and then held onto Squirtle (Frisket) and Pikachu (Chonk) because I didn't have the heart to rehome them. I cut Irie from my breeding program, spayed her and placed her with an amazing client/family. Up until about 2 month ago, Frisket (pictured on right) was here, but this photo was taken the day he went home with my best friend to live with his sister (from the first litter, formerly Lillian) and their family.

Anyways, that experience paired with the fact that everyone and their dog bred dogs during Covid to make a buck means that I am taking a solid pause from breeding and am just going to focus on trying to do right by the dogs who are in my care as well as the rescue dogs in need. You can follow my rescue endeavours at Taffy's Legacy Canine Rescue & Rehabilitation . Right now I am raising a litter of reserve mutts who's momma was on the chopping block at the pound due to severe entropion.

I will continue to health test and campaign my dogs and do have future breeding plans that I will do if I believe it to be ethical to do so. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So! Here's to getting back on social media and reigniting the passion that is all things dog, in this case, bulldog. ❤️

Emotions are silent, until we can’t take it anymore.

A reminder that your dog doesn’t need to have a physical reaction to create a negative association.

A negative emotional feeling can just as easily create a negative association.

Think of it this way.

When you’re feeling any type of emotion, you feel first, then your body reacts.

When you’re angry, you feel angry before you verbally or physical attack someone.

When you’re sad, you feel sad before you cry.

Before you have a panic attack, you feel it, before there’s a physical reaction.

Your dog feels before they react. Depending on how they are feeling, the association is being created.

“My dog use to love meeting dogs on leash. Now he lunges at dogs when they approach us”.

Chances are your dog didn’t love it. He had feelings about it and you just weren’t listening.

If you’re struggling with understanding your dogs emotional responses. We can help!

Resource Guarding Toys and Bones

When it comes to resolving resource guarding, we need to make sure that we are preventing the behaviour from occurring while we are working on changing the dogs emotional response to resources. If we do not focus on prevention during training, we are simply perpetuating the issue and reinforcing the dogs need to guard resources.

MANAGING THE ENVIRONMENT

Management is ensuring we set up the environment, the home, in order to control the behaviour from occurring. This can mean using gates, crates and confinement to ensure the dog is not allowed access to things or spaces they may guard.

For example:
Make sure the dog does not have access to things they will guard, such as; toys, bones, furniture, beds etc.
* Use a crate
* Use an exercise pen to control the dogs access to space gradually
* Install gates
The answers on management will differ from dog to dog, depending on the severity of the issue and the need to control access to rooms and space.

PREVENTION

This means we need to fully understand the precursor to the behaviour and NOT allow the behaviour to occur at all during our behaviour modification plan. The precursor is what happens right before the behaviour occurs. Identifying when items or spaces your dog guards will help give you the opportunity for prevention.
** The biggest mistake we can make, is “testing the waters” too soon. During a behaviour modification protocol, we tend to see success rather quickly. Allowing that success to give us false confidence in seeing if the behaviour is fully resolved. Just because the dog has not resource guarded anything in a few weeks, does not mean we can attempt to simply take an item away from them and deviate from the behaviour modification protocol.

If you would like to learn more about resource guarding or need help because your dog is resource guarding, please visit our website at www.trainingdogsonline.ca

Is your dog p*eing in the house?

When it comes to house training our adult dogs, it can seem like an uphill battle. Before picking up the phone to consult with a professional dog trainer, here are some simple tips to help you get started.

Supervision: Keeping a close eye on your dog will allow you the opportunity to prevent the behaviour from occurring. Eyes on the dog at all times.

Confinement/crate training: This will not only help you prevent any future accidents, but it can also start teaching your dog longer bladder control.

*Tether: A tether station, which is just an area indoors where you can put your dog on leash, tethered to something, in order to prevent them from moving around freely.

Don’t punish the behaviour. It seems natural to scold our dogs for soiling in the house, especially when we catch them in the act! The only problem with scolding the behaviour, is the dog just ends up soiling the second we aren’t looking. What can also happen is they can end up eating their p**p when soiling indoors, in order to avoid getting in trouble.

In reality, house training an older dog that has already developed a habit of using the house as a bathroom can be REALLY tricky to permanently resolve. Managing the environment and removing ANY and ALL opportunities for failure for 60 days is the best place to start.

If this is a new behaviour, please make sure to rule out any possible medical conditions.

Quick Tip: If you have a male dog that is marking, pick up a belly band. This can help make urinating indoors uncomfortable and begin the process of shaping new indoor potty habits.

Even if you have an older dog, going back to puppy basics with house training, will help you have more control over the situation.

Don't rush your training! Go at your dog's pace and take things slow. Remember progress not perfection.
