Some excellent information comming out from UC Davis on timing of Spay/Neuter!

Some suggestions when considering this research:

-spaying and neutering later will cost more (dogs are larger, requiring more drugs/anesthesia/time/supplies)
-later spay/neuter means that you will have a sexually mature male or female (this would mean heat cycles for females, likelihood of wandering for males, attraction of male coyotes (if living outside of town) and sometimes more aggression in males)
-spaying large breed, deep chested dogs as adults comes with more surgical risk. The surgery is more difficult and more complicated than a spay at 6-8 months of age
-pyometra is a risk in unspayed female dogs - it is an infection in the uterus that results in the need for emergency surgery and hospitalization. Costs can be quite high if this occurs.
-mammary cancer is also a risk in unspayed females.

What is our perspective? If you are choosing to spay or neuter your dog, do it at the time that is best for your family! Use all of the information above to make a decision that makes sense for your situation.
