The long weekend marks the start of cottage season and the unofficial beginning of summer - let the warm weather commence!

Cottage fun, off-leash hikes in the woods and general illness leads to an in crease in the number of patients needing our attention. While we are always here to help, longer wait times can be expected. Please be kind to our team! We are doing everything we can to ensure your pet is seen in a timely manner.

The third, and very deserving recipient of our 20th anniversary donation of $5000.00 is Precious Paws Rescue.
Precious Paws Rescue is an all breed dog rescue based in Simcoe County. Since 2006 they have been dedicated to saving the lives of homeless dogs through their volunteer foster program. They do not operate a shelter facility so while in rescue dogs stay in private foster homes where they can receive all of the TLC they so desperately need. This also gives the rescue a chance to properly assess the dogs in a home environment so that they can place them in the best possible forever home once they are ready for adoption. Every dog they accept into rescue is fully vetted, including spayed/neutered and microchipped, prior to being placed up for adoption.
Precious Paws Rescue receives no government funding, and rely on fundraising events and donations from generous supporters. They also offer programs to the community to assist pet owners in times of need through food donations, temporary fostering and emergency medical care. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for animals in need through foster care and adoption programs, comprehensive veterinary care, behavioural assessments and training, and public education.
Thank you for all that you do!

The second recipient of our $5000.00 Anniversary donation is an organization that does SO much for our community, the Barrie Food Bank!
It is the mission of the Barrie Food Bank to provide temporary food relief to individuals and families of our community who are in need, and to serve as a resource to guide them along the road to self sufficiency. The food bank is run by a small group of dedicated staff and over 120 volunteers who give of their time and knowledge to pick up food, sort it, stock the shelves and support our clients by distributing the food. Last year they assisted close to 33,000 individuals from nearly 8,000 families, couples, single parents and individual people, of which 5,500 were children under the age of 18.
Thank you for all that you do! If you would like to donate or volunteer, check out their website at https://www.barriefoodbank.org/

We are pleased to share the recipients of our first $5000.00 Anniversary Donation - Street Cats Rescue!

Street Cats Rescue is a non-profit organization with registered charity status serving Simcoe County and surrounding areas.
They are 100% staffed by volunteers, and rely solely on fundraising, donations and community support to continue their work. They have both a physical shelter as well as a large network of foster homes for the cats in their care, and strive to get to know each cat's unique personality to ensure they find the right home for each one.

All of cats that they take in receive an exam with a veterinarian, are treated for parasites and illnesses as needed. Prior to adoption each cat is vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped.

Street Cats is proud to be driven not by adoption numbers, but rather ensuring each adoption is a forever one.

Thank you Street Cats for all that you do!

We are very excited to be celebrating our 20th anniversary!

Huronia VEC was founded in 2001 by 20 local veterinarians, working together to ensure access to trusted, after hours care for their patients. 20 years later, we are honored to have cared for over 97,000 pets in their time of need.

With the pressures of the past year, our team is excited to celebrate this landmark anniversary by giving back to the community. We will be giving $20,000 to local charities over the next 2 weeks. Watch our page for information on the charities and rescues that are also doing their best to help support pets and people needing urgent care.

Women who work tirelessly in a 24 hour facility to help sick and injured pets in their time of need, all while raising their families, going to school, supporting their loved ones and volunteering their time to make this world a better place. Happy International Women's Day to the incredible women who constantly amaze us, and who keep us going every day!

DYK: Poultry bones can easily splinter if ingested, which poses a choking hazard and could seriously damage your pet's mouth, throat or intestines. To prevent a trip to the emergency room, avoid giving your pet table scraps. Visit bit.ly/OVMA-holiday-hazards to learn about other holiday hazards.

October is RVT Month!
As the country closed down to stop the spread of COVID-19, veterinary health care teams kept working. Our Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) continued to care and advocate for animals, facing an unprecedented increase in demand for emergency care while following strict new guidelines to keep the team safe. At Huronia VEC we are proud to have 20 RVTs on our team, and are constantly in awe of the dedication and commitment they show to their patients every day. Thank you RVTs - we couldn't do it without you!

Did you know that the su***de rate among Veterinary Professionals is 3.5 times that of the normal population?

Burnout, compassion fatigue, euthanizing beloved pets, cyberbullying, and harassment are but a few of the factors contributing to this unfortunate and unacceptable trend. It's a demanding and emotionally challenging profession, and can be incredibly rewarding, but the emotional trauma is real - especially right now with the added stress of a global pandemic.

As an employer, Huronia VEC is committed to the mental health of our team. All staff members have access to a Member Assistance Program, and resources are provided to learn about and encourage mental health and wellness. We also have a policy of mutual respect that sets expectations for how we treat our clients, and how we expect to be treated in return - and empowers the team to decline services to clients being verbally or physically abusive.

You may be asking, as a community, what can you do? Dr. Andy Roark has some great advice on his website. We hope you'll take a moment to read through, and let our team know that you care about the amazing work they do every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 🐾

Did you know that Huronia VEC works much like a human emergency room? Patients are initially assessed by a Registered Veterinary Technician who then prioritizes appointments by how critical they are. This TRIAGE system ensures that pets who need the most urgent care are seen first for life-saving treatment. It also means that pets who are stable have a longer wait, and in these times of COVID-19 restrictions that means sitting in your car rather than in our reception area. As the temperatures rise, we are bringing pets inside to wait in our air conditioned hospital wards, and we do have a washroom and water available for clients if you're getting warm - just use the intercom in our entrance to communicate with our team. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of unprecedented demand for emergency services.

***UPDATE*** Gus has been found! A HUGE thank you to everyone who shared our post. Gus on his way back home after a 3 day vacation in the great outdoors. We'll remind him of the movement after we punish him by smothering him with kisses. ***

Gus, a member of the Huronia VEC team, has gone missing - last seen on Gosnel Circle in Bradford. If you are in the area we would appreciate your help! Please keep an eye out for him - he's not an outdoor kitty so he's likely scared and hiding. Please call the clinic at 705-722-0377 with any sightings.

Many clients have contacted us concerning the provincial announcement about the closure of all non-essential services. The details of what is considered essential won't be released until tomorrow.
The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) has been lobbying the province to ensure that veterinary practices are exempt from any such general business shutdown, and as such we don't have any current plans to close. We will continue to be here to support you and your pets for emergencies as long as possible.
In order to ensure the health and safety of our team, we will be making some changes to our appointment flow and to client access to the building. Please call us before coming in so that we can detail what to expect when you arrive.
We hope you won't need us, and can stay home safe with your loved ones, but we're here if you do.

16/03/2020

Huronia VEC is committed to supporting you and your pets during this challenging time. We remain open 24 hours a day for emergencies.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please call us at 705-722-0377 before proceeding to the clinic with your pet emergency.

Happy RVT Month to all of our wonderful Registered Veterinary Technicians!
We are proud to have over 20 RVTs on our medical team, providing nursing care and treatments to our patients, and support to our Veterinarians.
One of the most incredible aspects of the RVT profession is just how extensive their knowledge and experience is. RVTs are formally educated in dozens of areas within veterinary medicine. From anaesthesia to nursing and dentistry; laboratory skills to nutrition to radiology; large animal to exotics and pocket pets, RVTs work alongside our veterinarians to provide animals with the highest quality of healthcare.
Thank you to our team for dedicating your time and expertise to caring for pets in their greatest time of need.
