As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I.. am there for your pet's routine healthcare. I take the time to discuss vaccination and flea/tick/heartworm/intestinal parasite preventives.

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I.. am also there in an emergency where triage and treatments need to be provided quickly.

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I.. am a professional paw holder. Being away from their owner can be stressful and I am there to provide comfort and advocate for your pet's healthcare.

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I.. am a shoulder to lean on in difficult times and when the day arrives where we must say goodbye to our beloved pets.

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I am... your pet's Nutritionist.
I can advise you on what food is best for your pet's lifestage, breed and lifestyle. I can calculate how much your pet needs to eat in order to maintain an ideal body weight - which plays a major role in overall health. I consult with the veterinarian about any health concerns - diabetes, urinary tract health, joint health, etc. - where nutrition is part of the long term treatment and management plan.

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I am.. your pet's Dental Hygienist.
I am trained in dental x-rays that are essential for fully assessing your pet's oral health as well as finding any impacted teeth hiding below the gumline. I am responsible for charting and assessing all signs of periodontal disease (gingival pockets, recession, resorptive lesions, mobility and fractured crowns). I perform all the steps of your pet's dental cleanings and make sure their teeth stay healthy (as well as pearly white)!

As a Registered Veterinary Technologist, I am.. your pet's Phlebotomist and Laboratory Technician.
I can collect a blood sample from the smallest vein and most wiggly patient. I am responsible for running all the in-clinic hematology, chemistry and urinalysis samples as well as preparing all the other types of samples that need to be shipped to outside laboratories. I prep, stain and interpret skin and ear cytology as well as blood smears that are crucial to decide what the best course of treatment for your pet will be.

Due to this wet weather we are seeing a spike in the incidence of Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) in our area.
If your horse is anorexic and has diarrhea, please seek immediate attention.

Please read the following and contact us with any questions.

Although the vaccine isn't 100% effective, it does reduce the severity of disease and reduces the likelihood of hospitalization and death.

Ouch! It’s Black Fly Bite Season!

Black flies leave welts that look very red, bruised and sore - but luckily most pets don’t seem to mind them. These lesions will typically resolve on their own in a week or so but it is important to keep your pet from licking

This week we celebrate the important people behind the desk and behind the scenes at our veterinary hospital! They are often the first and last point of contact you make with us. They provide the vital empathy, patience and communication to give our clients and patients the best possible experience and care.
Receptionists and Veterinary Assistants do so much. Please help us recognize their contributions!

Mel has been with Renfrew Animal Hospital since 2019. She makes sure that every corner of the clinic is well stocked so that what we need is only an arms length away, aids in the care of in-hospital patients and as an added bonus is our resident grooming consultant!
Her favourite part of each day is meeting such a wide variety of pets and with a constant learning curve, Animal Health Care teaches her something new every day!
Mel has four very special kitties of her own at home (Blaze, Sushi, Maple and Ghost) as well as Grimm (a German Shepherd who secretly thinks he is a cat and who is the biggest baby of them all). Outside the clinic she enjoys traveling (with everyone in tow), exploring the local trails, and being an avid karaoke goer.

Thank you Mel for all you bring to our team!

Kayla graduated from the Algonquin College Veterinary Assistant program in 2018 and joined the Renfrew Animal Hospital team in 2021.
Her passion for veterinary medicine stems truly from the human animal bond - making the most anxious and fearful patients at ease in their time of need. It is heartwarming to see the progress a pet can make with time, patience and dedication. A fear free experience for each and every pet is her goal!
At home her heart has welcomed three fluffy companions - Gilbert (her 6 year old chunky brown tabby soul pet adopted while in the VA program), Frank (a one in a million 2 year old English Mastiff and Pyrenees mix) and Toby aka TubTubs (the kitten who came into the clinic and faked an injury just so she would take him home because she is a sucker for male tabby cats). These three keep her company when relaxing at home but otherwise she and her boyfriend love road trips and outings on the side by side.

Thank you Kayla for all you bring to our team!

With many years experience in the field, CarolAnne joined the Renfrew Animal Hospital team in 2020. She juggles many different roles both in ‘front and back of house’ from scheduling first vaccinations for the smallest kitten to booking farm calls for our largest bovine and equine patients. She loves getting to meet all of our clients when they stop in or call.
On her down time, when not at a hockey arena or soccer field, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, knittting and tending to her garden. In those few and far between moments of rest her cats Marble and Marnie are happy to cuddle.

Thank you CarolAnne for all you bring to our team!

As you can see Kim’s love of animals started at a very young age before she joined the Renfrew Animal Hospital team in 2019! She’s thrilled to work with such caring group of coworkers as well as getting to meet all of the pets who walk through our doors.
As long as she can remember she has always been a ‘crazy cat lady’ - her current clowder is made up of Bobblehead, Thor, Isabelle, Jackie and Loki. More recently she also found a special place in her heart for Simmental cattle after meeting a local farmer and his family and moving from Ottawa to Renfrew. Outside of the clinic, farm and sugar bush she spends her time enjoying her hobbies of photography, drawing and gardening.

Thank you Kim for all you bring to our team!

Niomi graduated from the St. Lawrence College Veterinary Assistant program in 2019 and joined the Renfrew Animal Hospital team very shortly thereafter. At a very young age she knew she would dedicate her life to helping animals. She is very passionate about what she does and loves knowing she is able to make a difference in the lives of our fur babies.
She has two very special fur babies of her own - George (a cat with a very crazy personality and a bit of a wild attitude) and Ruben (a Pitbull mix with a very big heart and lots of energy).
Outside of the clinic she enjoys spending time outside at the local beach with Ruben - going on as many adventures as they can outside - as well as going back home to visit friends and family.

Thank you Niomi for all you bring to our team!
