Help Stop the Import of Endangered Monkeys!

On Friday, August 9, 2024 the Canadian Transportation Agency denied a landing permit to a cargo plane loaded with long-tailed macaques from Cambodia for apparently being in violation of International Air Transport Association guidelines. These animals are being shipped to Canada to be used in labs as test and research subjects. The following day, on August 10, the plane landed at the Montreal-Mirabel airport — 48 hours after the animals had been loaded. CITES Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Enforcement Directorate have been contacted to determine what enforcement action will be taken.

Canada has no excuse for willfully ignoring the conservation concerns related to the likelihood that these are wild monkeys laundered through a breeding facility, the humanitarian concerns of animals confined to travel crates for extreme lengths of time, or the concerns about zoonotic illnesses that relate to the importation of non-human primates. Apart from that, the whole practice of so abusing our fellow primates should be a source of shame.

We are asking you to send an email to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, to suspend all imports of monkeys from Cambodia.

Animals need protection, and some people need protection from themselves. Where you find acute animal abuse, you often find shock collars. In this case, they are used on exotic animals living captive in private homes.

Science shows that aversive methods have risks for dogs’ welfare, so we have to keep explaining that the best approach to dog training is one that uses rewards.

Arizona Humane Society offers snake avoidance training classes that use positive reinforcement techniques that owners can use both at home and outdoors.

“We don’t use electric shock collars. We don’t use prong collars or choke collars. It’s really based on the fundamentals of heeling. Come when called and leave it,” Armbruster explained.

Who else offers positive techniques to teach snake avoidance?

Long County, Ga. – After a former Long County sheriff’s deputy was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after being caught on video repeatedly hitting his K-9 partner Nero and slamming him to the ground at his home in Richmond Hill, PETA—which had long supported the use of K-9s—sent letters to the top five law-enforcement organizations in the U.S. urging them to recognize that the time has come to encourage their members to phase out the use of dogs altogether. Some law-enforcement agencies are already using robotic dogs to deal with crime.

PRINCE GEORGE, MD, OFFICER DAVID ACOSTA ACCUSED OF ABUSING POLICE DOGS
Cpl David Acosta, an 18 year veteran faces three counts of animal cruelty towards his police dogs, a 2 year old Bloodhound named Daisy, and his other patrol dog, 7 year old Spartacus.
Different handlers noticed that Daisy’s shock collar was too tight and when they removed it, they found two infected gaping wounds. When Daisy’s neck was shaved by a veterinarian for treatment eight more puncture wounds were found.
This motivated an examination of Spartacus, and similar prominent open wounds were found, as well as numerous old scars. A statement made by PG Co. Animal Services Division and the Police noted collars left on too long can cause irritation and the shock collars were left on the dogs continuously for several weeks. It is recommended no more than 12 hours by the manufacturers. The dogs’ have been reassigned to new handlers.

*Thank goodness for the canine handlers that noticed the wounds and took the dog for medical help.

*Sad and telling, that the Police and Animal Services would seem to equate, and attempt to justify, Infected gaping wounds with irritation from keeping the collars on too long.

*Abuse in dog training within Police forces is an important issue yet often not met with transparency or consequences.

*Until Police remove their old school trainers and replace them with people who use learning theory based on science, animal abuse will remain their primary training methods, and there will be many more Daisys.

A Louisiana Teenager Beats & Electrically Burns His Lab With a Shock Collar While on a Hunting Trip, July 2024

The sheriff arrested the teen after a video surfaced of the 15-year-old abusing his dog. The teen chokes the dog and yells, I’m gonna f**k you up. I hope this s**t burns as he presses the remote of a shock collar. He also calls the dog the n- word. He then repeatedly punches the dog in the ear as the dog yelps in pain. While the screaming dog is being beaten, the person filming, and another person standing by, laugh. All three face animal cruelty charges. A petition on social media has received 114,000 signatures.

The dog has allegedly received a full medical evaluation and been surrendered to a new home. The parents of the boy claim they love their dog and their son and hopes he learns from the experience. They claim they are devastated about the entire situation. The sheriff reports the suspects and their families are receiving threats.

Meanwhile, the hunting world is concerned about how this reflects on them. Shock collars have been a favourite tool of hunters for decades. This isn't the first story of hunting dogs being abused with shock collars, and likely won't be the last.

Anyone who reports abuse is a hero. Currently, there is a movement in the hunting community to promote change and positive reward based training methods. This should be applauded.

As long as shock collars are readily available for sale, any ethically unburdened person will buy them and produce more victims.

An Owner of a DOG TRAINING BUSINESS, EAST CAROLINA RETRIEVER, Has Been Charged with Nine Counts of Cruelty to Animals.

A viral video shows the 32 year old man punching a dog and lifting it in the air, then slamming the dog to the ground, while another dog looks on helplessly. The man has been jailed and 11 dogs are now in protective custody.

The alleged abuse involved mostly Labs and a Pointer. One dog was shocked until his eyes were bloodshot. Another punched and shocked for an extended period, while a puppy was hit with a heeling stick 52 times. Other Labs were choked and some electrically shocked until they vomited.

The Deputies are continuing their investigation and anyone with information is to call deputies at 252-559-61118.

Our question is, who are the owners of these dogs, and where were they when their dogs were being terrorized?

This dog is being schooled, in many ways ,because he is being respected and shown people can be trustworthy, gentle and fun.
Well done.

A Fayetteville Police Officer Was Filmed Punching His Police Dog, Evey Weisblat, July 2024

A bystander filmed the officer dragging his police dog, his front feet off the ground, after punching him in the face, seven times. The police claim the video didn’t depict the entire incident and that the dog had bit the officer in the thigh. Therefore, to gain a position of control he had to strike the dog with his fist seven times for the dog to let go. No explanation why the dog bit the officer in the first place.

The statement released by FPD said the dog was unhurt, but reported the officer was injured, and received treatment, The dog has not been seen by an outside vet and no evidence of the officer’s injuries have been provided. There has been no mention of the emotional harm that either, the dog or officer, suffered.

The Fayetteville police have refused to answer additional questions asked by CityView reporter regarding the incident, the name of the officer, if there has been any disciplinary action, and the fate of the dog. Also, FPD declined CityView’s inquiries about what training the K-9 handler received, what the training of Fayetteville police K-9 handlers entails, how long the officer was paired with the K-9 and why a K-9 team had been requested to respond to the call. Animal experts including Peta and Jutta King, a dog trainer and behaviourist, denounced the officer’s behaviour as animal cruelty.

Colin Henstock, an investigations project manager for PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department, told CityView his department sees instances of K-9 abuse by police officers across the country on a regular basis, the most common of which is officers leaving K-9s unattended in hot cars. “This isn’t an incident where a man is fighting for his life against a dog,” Henstock told CityView. “This is a man abusing a dog. Regardless of what happened before the video started filming, he had the dog under control, and there’s no excuse for continuing to yank him and strike him like that.”

At rodeos, the hot shot is used to deliver up to 5,000 volts of pain to animals, so people can amuse themselves watching them writhe in pain.

Shame on the Animal Welfare groups in Alberta who are not demanding charges be laid. Shame on the police for not raiding the Calgary Stampede and charging the participates with animal abuse. And shame on anyone who is enjoying the abuse, but most of all, shame on those who take their children.

"Children must not be taught that abuse is acceptable...
When children see an animal abused, such as a baby calf being roped, dragged, choked and slammed to the ground by a grown man, and see him win prizes for his behavior, this tells the child that abusing animals is not only acceptable but a way to win fame and fortune.

ANIMALS 24-7 readers scarcely need to be reminded that many violent criminals abuse animals before they injure or kill humans. Among the most notorious were the serial killers Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Charles Manson, but similar examples can be found in the crime news every day––at least three, in fact, just on the day that ANIMALS 24-7 prepared this guest column for posting."...

UPDATE: Both tabby kittens have been adopted, so only the little black kitten on the right is left looking for her forever family. She is a very sweet, affectionate and playful little kitten who really would love a home of her own.
Accepting applications for these 3 sweet female kittens. The Black kitten on the right and the kitten on the left are pretty bonded and still a little timid so we would love for them to be adopted together if possible! Please go to our website page at https://snappsociety.com/ or email Laurie at [email protected] for an application.

All Board and Train facilities and dogs trainers are tainted, undeservedly so, with the criminal behaviour of those also calling themselves Board & Trains and dog trainers.
Please know there is a world of difference between the skills and ethics of reward-based dog trainers and aversive/balanced based dog trainers.

To avoid falling into the hands of an aersive/ balanced dog trainer, please thoroughly research the person and business before you leave your dog. In fact, we recommend you always stay with your dog during training.

Find out first hand if what they say is what they do. Take recommendations from others with a grain of salt.

If a business or trainer harms your dog, don't just ask for your money back, report them and press charges.

Before you Board read this.

The Calgary Stampede is Legal Animal Abuse

Lawful But Awful

July5 - 14th. Chargeable criminal acts against animals will take place, yet no government or policing authority will stop it. Our laws are a joke.

Shame on anyone who supports rodeo abuse or enjoys watching it. It should also be considered child abuse when people take their children to witness cruelty as fun.

Men triumphant and elated because they can slam, terrorize and take down a passive non-violent baby animal is pathetic. Men who participate in rodeo abuse are not brave, not powerful, they are cowards. Take off your spurs and be real men.
