At almost 2000 lb, Rhaegal is the biggest resident at the sanctuary and also the youngest herd member at 15 years old. Polly is a miniature pony weighing about 300 lb and is 21 years old.

Sometimes visitors mistake Polly for Rhaegal’s daughter. 😊

Some food for thought for the backyard breeder:

As baby chick season approaches and the prices of eggs keep rising, I’m sure a lot of people are tempted to raise chickens themselves. Before people flock (no pun intended 🤣) to their local farm store and start buying all the baby chicks please consider the following fun facts…. 🐣 🐤 🥚

1. Most hens do not start laying eggs until 18-22 weeks of age (that’s about 5 months give or take)

2. For the first few weeks of their lives baby chicks need to be kept at a temperature of around 95 degrees Fahrenheit /35 degrees Celsius

3. Chicks need to eat…SURPRISE! And like the price of everything else, chicken feed has gone up. A 50lb bag of layer is over $20.

4. Chickens molt… what does that mean? Your chicken will lose her feathers and stop laying for a period of time.

5. Chickens don’t lay as many eggs in the winter months.

6. The average lifespan of a chicken is 8-10 years. Most of them are spent (stop laying) by 4 or 5 years. What will you do with your beloved hens then?

7. Predators such as foxes, coyotes, fishers, birds of prey, the neighbour’s dogs and even raccoons will hunt your chickens.

8. Some of your chicks will grow up to be roosters, as it is almost impossible to s*x them properly at birth. Without the proper male/female ratio (about 1 to 5), they will fight. Roosters are the most abused and discarded species in the world. Do you have a plan for your rooster flock? As a sanctuary with 35 roos in our care, we can confirm that most people don’t.

9. Chickens love to dig holes and destroy bedding around flowers in the yard, good luck keeping them from doing so.

10. Chickens can get medical issues just like any other animal. Are you prepared to take them to the vet? Keep in mind that chickens are considered “exotics” by the vet industry, which means triple the vet bill of your dog or cat.

11. Most importantly, despite what we have come to accept as normal, it is not in fact normal for a hen to lay eggs every day. A wild hen lays 12-15 eggs PER YEAR. Humans have selectively bred chickens to lay more eggs than their bodies can handle. This leads to a number of heath issues, including brittle bones, cancer and a high risk of getting egg bound.

What’s the answer? Don’t buy or exploit living beings for your own benefit. There are much better sources of protein.

Transform your old cooler into a cat shelter for feral felines.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

Materials Needed 🪚

🐾 Old picnic coolers
🐾 Insulation materials (e.g., straw, foam board)
🐾 Waterproof glue or sealant
🐾 Screws or nails
🐾 Saw or utility knife
🐾 Hammer
🐾 Bedding materials (e.g., towels, blankets)

Construction Process 🛠️

1. Clean and prepare the cooler: Thoroughly clean the picnic cooler with soap and water. Remove any lingering odours or debris.

2. Cut a hole for the entrance: Use a saw or utility knife to cut a small hole on one side of the cooler, just big enough for a cat to enter.

3. Add insulation: Fill the cooler with insulation materials like straw or foam board to keep the interior warm and cozy.

4. Line the cooler with bedding: Add a layer of bedding materials like towels or blankets to provide a comfortable surface for the cats to sleep on.

5. Secure the lid: Use screws or nails to secure the lid of the cooler, ensuring it won't flip open in the wind.

6. Add a roof or waterproof layer: Apply a waterproof glue or sealant around the edges of the cooler to prevent water from seeping in. You can also add a roof or a layer of waterproof material on top of the cooler for extra protection.

7. Place the shelter in a safe location: Position the shelter in a quiet, protected area, such as a porch, garage, or a spot near a building, to provide the cats with a safe and warm place to retreat from the elements.

Tips and Variations 📝

💡 You can add a layer of reflective material, like aluminum foil, to the interior of the cooler to help retain heat.

💡 Consider adding a small ramp or stairs to make it easier for cats to enter and exit the shelter.

💡 If you're using multiple coolers, you can stack them to create a larger shelter or a cat "condo."

💡 Be sure to check local regulations and consult with animal welfare organizations before building and placing shelters for stray cats.

📣📣 Calling all dog lovers! Koda is a 4-yo American Bulldog. She is looking for a new home. A very sweet girl who gets along with her humans and loves kids but would do best as an only dog in the house. She’s cool with cats but does like to chase them for fun. We will cover the cost of her spay surgery. Located in Hastings. If you can help by fostering this girl until she can find a safe place to land, please reach out.

Back in October, a group of TMU (formerly Ryerson) film students stayed at the farm and shot a documentary about the sanctuary and in particular, Chewie's rescue. They also helped to stack 1000 bales of hay in the process. Aside from the fact that there are entirely too many shots of me and not enough of the animals, I'm super impressed and proud of this lil film. Chewie is every pig and this should be every pig's story. Thank you, Keefe Jassoy and team for raising awareness in such an artful way.

Day 23 Aruba & Foxxy

Aruba
He Is a 1 year old very affectionate, social and super smart pup. Housetraining is in progress but he is doing great and catching on quickly. Aruba gets along with all animals and people, has great recall and is very easy to train. He is up do date on all shots and will be neutered before he goes to his forever home.

Foxxy
He hates being locked up or tied up. If left alone in a room or crate, he eventually settles. Foxxy is energetic and loves to play with other dogs. He is uninterested in cats. True to his husky nature, he does love to wander, so needs a secure, fully-fenced yard.
For more information on Aruba, Foxxy and other pets up for adoption please visit https://www.promisedlandsanctuary.org/

A Promise Kept

What started out as a dream of one young girl who wanted to save all animals from suffering, has become a reality.

In November 2017, I finally made the move I’ve been dreaming about for most of my life – bought a farm and started a non-profit, volunteer-run sanctuary, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating farm and domestic animals and offering them a safe haven for life.

Having worked with animal rescues and advocating for their humane and compassionate treatment, I have witnessed firsthand the neglect and abuse they suffer daily. These innocents have no voice, but through watching their suffering, I have found mine and my vow is to never be silent again. I will do whatever is in my power to help rescue, heal and protect every single individual that comes to the sanctuary.

If you’re reading this and are inspired to help, you too can make a difference by deciding to make compassionate choices every time you sit down for a meal, by educating yourself and by speaking out against the gross abuse and neglect of all animals, everywhere.
