Found a turtle on the road? Here's how to help:

🐢 Eyes peeled! Watch for turtles basking or crossing.

🐢 Safety first! Stop only if it's safe (hazard lights on!).

🐢 Snapping turtles? See video at www.rideauwildlife.org/turtles.

🐢 Pick up other turtles by the shell and move to the side of the road in the direction they were going.

❌ Don't force them to change direction or relocate them far. Don't pick them up by their tails.

We are often asked how to help wildlife
Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary are the experts

With these unusually warm temperatures we have been having, we are expecting babies earlier than usual!

IMPORTANT: Majority of the time when orphaned wildlife are found alone there is a good chance mom will come back.

But sadly, that is not always the case. Some signs to look for to determine if an animal truly needs to be rescued are:
• it appears friendly, is vocalizing, or following people or pets
• obvious signs of injury or illness
• it is cold, wet or shivering (this might be a temporary rescue)
• it has bugs or flies on its body
• it was handled by a cat or dog even if there are no obvious wounds
• it is near dead adults or siblings
• it is in imminent danger, such as near a road
• it has not been reunited with its mother after a few hours

If you find any orphaned wildlife, please email us at [email protected] with a photo, details, address found and phone number. Do not give them anything before speaking to a wildlife rehabber. For more information go to https://www.rideauwildlife.org/baby-mammals/

An elderly couple is moving in a big hurry, so as to be closer to a hospital. They have more pets than they can take with them to their new much smaller home. They by no means went looking to have the number of animals that they do, but you likely know of places that get more than their share of cats dropped off/abandoned.

Trying to find homes for three female CATS, aged 4, 5 and 8. Named Gigi, Anne and Lady Grey. Gigi and Anne are a pale caramel, bonded, one short haired, one long. Lady Grey is a very shy girl who lives on an enclosed porch with heated water bowl in winter. After reaching out to overfull rescues, I am putting it out to the Love Your Pet family.

I wish I had photos to share but these cats are pretty wary of strangers and I was there on a busy packing day. If you could foster these cats, please reach out. Moving day is fast approaching for these sweet people and three desperate kitties.

With a heavy heart, we sadly had to say goodbye to Beethoven today. He brought much joy to the store in the last 4 (edit - originally said 7) years. We were gifted to receive him in 2019 at 9/10 years old. Hope there are giant blue worms on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Love you, Old Man

A giant thank you and hugs for our volunteer, Leah, who gave him all the comfort and care in his last weeks and days. ❤️
