Today we celebrate these sweet, intelligent furry little creatures. 🐀🐁

Rats and mice get a bad rap as they are often associated with disease, germs and dirt. Alberta even has a ban on owning pet rats as they consider themselves a rat free province.

But these are not wild rodents you may find in a field. Fancy Rats and Mice have been bred and kept as pets for years and are both clean and gentle. Not to be confused with wild (black) rats, the Fancy Rat is the domesticated brown rat; while the Fancy Mouse is the domesticated form of the house mouse.

From earning trick titles to sniffing out land mines, rats are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They are clean like cats—always washing themselves—and are very personable. They know their owners and want to be with them.

Earlier this year Ronin the Rat set a new world record, recovering over 100 land mines. Read the full story here: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2ewxjjw842o

Today, we remember those who bravely served and sacrificed for our country and the courageous animals that stood faithfully by their side with unwavering loyalty.

Animals had many different roles during war time: pigeons carried important messages, dogs helped to find the wounded, horses were used in battle, and donkeys carried the wounded to field stations.

The purple poppy is a complimentary poppy to the red poppy of the Royal Canadian Legion. It is not meant in any way to undermine or reject the red poppy and its symbolism of the human lives who served and died in war.

Let us honour and remember every life—human and animal—that has sacrificed for our freedom. They shall not be forgotten.

With gratitude, we remember. 🌺

Anyone who has met Amanda, our Weight Pull Coach/Judge, knows this isn't a one day celebration for her, its a lifestyle choice. You will NEVER find her wearing a matching pair. 🧦

Odd Socks Day celebrates not only the freedom to wear whatever kind of socks you like, but also about embracing differences and being kind instead of bullying people for being unique.

So today, don't worry if the dryer monster didn't leave you with a matching pair. Slap on whatever ones you find and strut your stuff! 😎

P.S. The Sock Law is an urban myth born out of sumptuary laws that regulated clothing styles and materials to be worn by different social classes. But I found it lead to further interesting info, so I included it for entertainment purposes. ;)

Odds are you’ve either lost a pet to cancer or know someone who has. It is a gut wrenching, heartbreaking, and often self-doubting situation to endure. This day is dedicated to remembering the dogs we’ve loved and lost but also protecting the ones we still have.

This day was created by Terry Simons, a dog trainer and agility competitor, who lost his beloved dog Reveille after being diagnosed with Lymphoma. He wanted to raise awareness and hopefully one day, find a cure.

Lymphoma is one of the most diagnosed cancers and a broad term used to discuss the group of cancers related to lymphocytes which are white blood cells that help fight off infection.

Two primary types are:

• Multicentric lymphoma is the most common, affecting as much as 85% of cases. Symptoms include enlarged lymph nodes as well as hard (often painless) lumps found in the neck, armpits, and groin areas. Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, lethargy and weakness.

• Alimentary lymphoma affects roughly 10% of lymphoma cases and targets the intestines. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, painful abdomen and weight loss.

Today is aimed at helping you recognize changes in your pet as well as booking regular vet checkups. Early detection is key and can lead better outcomes.

If you've lost a cherished pet to cancer, please post a photo of them below not only for remembrance but to remind those currently going thru it that they aren't alone. 💚

Nov. 1, 2025, marks the first Red Collar Day, a national day for truth, healing and shared responsibility, to ensure every community has the care, infrastructure, and respect needed to make dog culls, and the grief they cause, a thing of the past, says Increased ACCESS.

Increased ACCESS, an Indigenous-led nonprofit that helps with animal management solutions, has created a new day to raise awareness about public health and safety inequities in Indigenous communities across Canada.

Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation member Shawn Quick is on the board of directors for Increased ACCESS. He said Tla-o-qui-aht is proud to participate in Red Collar Day.

“Our remote communities haven’t had the same resources to manage abandoned or roaming animals, and that has been traumatic for those of us who’ve been left to deal with it. I know first-hand how tragic these ‘dog shoots’ can be – I used to be the person my community called in those situations,” Quick shared in an email.

“It’s wrong that so many rural and remote communities remain chronically under-resourced and have to rely on the only means available to keep people safe. This is a policy problem that governments can fix – and have a fiduciary duty to fix. Red Collar Day is a call to action for everyone,” said Quick.

To participate in Red Collar Day, Increased ACCESS encourages people to raise awareness by sharing posts and images using the hashtags
