After August 1, 2024 new rules will be in place for dogs entering the US. Dogs must be vaccinated against Rabies, microchipped and be accompanied with import documentation. This includes dogs travelling to the US just for a day trip. Dogs not meeting these criteria will be denied entry.

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

No 😎 needed. We’ve heard warnings and precautions, but they don’t make sense. No need to make any adjustments for your pets on Monday.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Note the meal is forage based 😋 🐎

Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of things can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of hay or grass) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.

As always, please be sure to consult with your vet regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

Meet Tucker! 🐶

This sweet boy was admitted to our clinic for tea tree oil toxicity. While tea tree oil is well-known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties and is commonly used to treat various ailments in humans, it can be extremely harmful to pets. In fact, as little as 7 drops of 100% tea tree oil can result in severe poisoning, and applications of 10-20 ml of 100% oil have led to poisoning and death in both dogs and cats. Ingesting tea tree oil orally or absorbing it through the skin can cause a range of symptoms, including low body temperature, weakness, unsteady walking, inability to walk, tremors, increased liver enzymes, and even death.

Tucker’s symptoms began presenting 12 hours post-exposure. Concerned about his lethargy, shaking, and balance issues, Tucker’s parents promptly called Pet Poison, the first step in addressing any potential toxicity. Upon arrival, Tucker was bathed to remove any remaining tea tree oil from his skin and fur. We performed bloodwork to assess liver values, initiated IV fluids to flush out his system, and monitored him closely overnight.

Fortunately, Tucker showed improvement overnight. With his symptoms subsided, normal vitals, and a healthy appetite, we were able to send Tucker back to his family! Feel better Tucker! 🩺🩵🐾
