This is to go with Monday's post!

Calm behavior starts with meeting your dog's needs for both physical and mental enrichment. Here's how you can help your dog:

🐾 Proper Exercise:
Exercise isn’t just letting your dog out in the yard to run around. Real exercise combines physical activity and mental stimulation to create enrichment. Whether it’s a structured walk, a game of tug, or training, be intentional about how you get your dog moving and thinking.

🐶 Interaction with YOU:
Your dog wants you to be the best part of their day! Here are some building engagement ideas:

✨ Trick training
✨ Fun obedience
✨ Sit, down, stand, place combinations
✨ Scent work using their food
✨ Obstacle course or urban obstacle using trees, stumps, benches...

A special shoutout to Vykor – our very own Malinois x Dutch – who continues to amaze us and show incredible progress, not just with his performance and demo work, but he was once severely dog-aggressive and highly reactive. Vykor now confidently interacts with other dogs muzzle-free under guidance! Seeing him hang out with Angus and Gracie during their training was a powerful reminder of how much progress is possible with dedication and the right approach. 💪

Tips for Home and Training: Helping Your Dog Thrive

As trainers, we work hard to set you and your dog up for a great future. However, ultimate success often requires changes with you, within the home and developing your skills as an owner. Without addressing certain factors, progress can stall or be undone.

Tips for a Better-Behaved Dog at Home

1) Leash Inside the Home:
If your dog struggles with listening or exhibiting proper behaviour indoors (or outdoors), keep them on a leash, even tethered to you. This prevents unwanted behaviours from being practiced and you can guide them better!

2) Timing is Everything:
You have just 1.5 seconds to pair a consequence with a behaviour. For example, reward your dog immediately when they perform a desired behaviour using food, toys. If you have successfully worked with a "marker" system, you can 'mark' and the dog will anticipate his reward with the behaviour he performed.

3) Encourage Calmness with Place Stays:
Practice place stays regularly, reinforcing calmness with repetition. We have comfortable, orthopedic dog beds placed in different rooms, provide a consistent and relaxing spot for Vykor to settle. These rules apply for when we have guests over, board and trains, or throughout the day. This also helps to keep his energy reserved for his work, performance and outdoor fun.

4) Use Quiet Time Strategically:
When you cannot supervise your dog closely, provide them with a safe and quiet space to rest, such as a crate. A well-trained dog can relax in a crate or follow commands to settle on boundaries, not just at home but also in dog-friendly locations. This ensures they are calm and well-behaved in various environments.

Remember, not everyone appreciates barking or jumping dogs. Setting clear boundaries and expectations benefits both your dog and those around them. By combining professional training with consistent changes at home, you’ll help your dog thrive in any situation.

Gracie’s Incredible Transformation 🐾💫

Gracie came to us with a lot of intensity—over-aroused, highly stimulated, and showing aggressive thrashing and growling at her owners. She was sold to them as a "therapy dog candidate," but by the time she was just 6 weeks old, the breeders couldn’t manage her behavior and still went ahead with the sale. Her owners were even considering re-homing options, not knowing how to manage the growing over-stimulation and aggression.

Before her board and train, we met with Gracie, and I could already see the early signs. While some of her behavior might seem "normal" for a puppy, she was also very pushy. If you let her get away with things, she would quickly become overstimulated, which would then turn into anger, growling and thrashing, and she couldn't stop.

Fast forward to today, and Gracie is thriving! She’s walking beautifully on leash, doing great in public settings, and reliably coming when called off-leash. No more jumping or grabbing—she’s calm, happy, and responsive, following commands both on and off leash.

Oh, and YES, we do board and train with younger dogs as well, to ensure they’re on a good path and set up for a successful future. It’s all about addressing behaviors early and giving them the right foundation to grow into balanced, reliable, happy dogs so they can avoid being rehomed or ending up in bad situations

Going the Extra Mile with Our Board and Train Dogs 🐾

At BK9, we truly go above and beyond for the dogs in our board and train program. We’ve been so fortunate to work with incredibly dedicated owners, and it’s been amazing to see such outstanding progress.

Take Angus, for example—a dog who came to us insecure, scared, and highly reactive, constantly on the hunt for any passing dog. Today, he’s climbing mountains. We were out with all three dogs off-leash, including a dog that was once aggressively reactive. This dog is now off-leash and muzzle-free. For anyone who has experienced true aggression with full intent, you know how MASSIVE this is.

A dog walked by, and with immediate control, all three dogs went into a solid down—no reactivity. This wouldn’t have been possible in the first week. Fast forward to now, and they’re achieving things we only DREAMED of. Angus, in particular, stopped his reactivity, decompressed in the moment, and fully accepted his reward—a true turning point for him. I couldn't be more proud of him to get this far!

We still have one more week of training, and on Monday, with the help of some amazing BK9 volunteers, we’ll be proofing their skills. The dogs will walk with multiple people and pass by several unfamiliar dogs to simulate real-world scenarios.

Our goal is always to ensure these dogs leave here ready to thrive. During their stay, they’re not just in training—they’re part of our home. This comfort and structure help set them up for success in every aspect of their lives.

These dogs are climbing mountains, and we couldn’t be more proud of them! ❤️

Someone’s trying to add Santa to their chew toy collection! Let’s keep our festive visitors jolly and bite-free this holiday season. 🎄

🎄 Holiday Bite Prevention Tips: 🐾

1️⃣ Introduce Slowly: Let guests greet your dog calmly to avoid overwhelming them. Sometimes, encouraging them to ignore your dog is even better. Letting a dog greet at their own pace without pushing them is best. You're inviting people into your dog's territory, and this can be a sensitive space for them.

2️⃣ Create a Safe Space: Give your dog a quiet spot to relax if the excitement gets too much, or if you cant watch them closely. The same can go for younger, mouthy, Nipping or biting puppies.

3️⃣ Exercise your dog beforehand to burn off extra energy. This will help them relax. Also, do some mental and physical exercise to help them feel well balanced and in a naturallyrested state.

4️⃣ No Hands... Remind guests not to reach for your dog or your dog’s toys or treats. 🦴

5️⃣ Watch for Signals: Keep an eye out for signs of stress like yawning, pacing, looking for a small place to retreat, or lip licking. This is the time to put your dog away. Bite prevention is huge, and make sure you advocate for your dog. Never leave them unsupervised, so that way you always have their back!

😍So Neat!😍

Two weeks in, and our board-and-train dogs have already earned their off-leash reliable freedom! 🎉🐾 They’re mastering loose-leash walking, tackling environmental challenges, and progressing on the behaviors they came here to improve ( extreme fear reactivity, unreliable recall, not good on leash and over stimulated biting and thrashing on handlers to name a few).

Today’s enrichment activity was particularly exciting: exposure to a horse 🐎! The goal? To calmly observe and get used to the presence of such a large animal without running, barking, lunging, biting or charging.

Before this exposure, we ensure several things are in place:
➡️Positive response to commands, like recall, place, and leave it. ✅
➡️Understanding the learning process, and communication cues. 🧠
➡️Knowing when to disengage - from something stimulating. 🔑

Each new situation or environment presents a fresh learning opportunity. 🌟 That’s why our board-and-train program integrates these dogs into our home and daily adventures—they’re always learning in real-world settings!

This week, we’ll also be proofing behaviors with other handlers to ensure a smooth transition for when the dogs return home, happy, trained, and responsive. 🐕💖

🦷🩸From biting and thrashing to calm and confident—Aggression doesn’t have to define a dog’s future. ✨️ Gracie came to us for aggression 😬. She was easily over-aroused—nipping quickly progressed to biting and thrashing, not letting go, constantly escalating with no "off" switch 🚨. She didn't have any reliable behaviors, and anything fun her owners tried to do ended up with her jumping at them with teeth 🦷. Even trying something as simple as following a food lure 🍖, ended up in her grabbing your hand and thrashing. She is entering **week 3 of 4** of her board and train and is doing amazing! 🌟 Calm, confident, and happy 🐾. We provided proper outlets for her energy and established clear boundaries so she understands not to use people as a way to release frustration 🙌. Even though she's young 🐕, it was crucial to curve this behavior early so she has a bright and successful future ahead 🌈. Not one where you see a dog losing their home 🏡 or being medicated oh psychological numbing drugs💊 due to aggression, impulse and control issues that could have been addressed sooner. She was headed down that path, but now she's getting the help she needed ❤️. We will provide **ANY** support Gracie needs following her board and train 🛠️, and we absolutely love the dedication of her owners 💕. Dressage Heeling: Precision and Partnership 🐾 Dressage heeling isn’t just movement—it’s a dance of focus and connection between handler and dog. Rooted in control, flow, and mutual trust, it highlights the beauty of precise teamwork. ✨ Why Dressage Heeling for me? 🐕Clear Communication: Builds seamless understanding between dog and handler while working on speed and precision. 🐕Focused Engagement: Keeps dogs sharp, engaged and mentally active. 🐕Stronger Bond: Each step of training reinforces trust and teamwork. We had a fantastic puppy class that emphasized human-to-dog socialization. We practiced swapping handlers to ensure puppies get used to being handled by different people, which is crucial for their interactions with vets, groomers, people they're going to interact with around them, and trainers. We paid close attention to each puppy's comfort levels and taught them how to settle when excited. Additionally, we worked on engagement exercises, place training, and focus work, and everyone made great progress. I'm incredibly proud of each participant's development. During this activity, we engaged with a young Rottweiler pup who seemed uneasy about hands approaching over his head. Observing his body language, we noticed a mix of curiosity and hesitation. Becky Herman www.bk9.ca Photo Information: Jetta (left) & R***r (right) Jetta - started our puppy-hood to adulthood training after she was returned to the breeder from a previous home and then re-homed. She started training at about 4 months with her current owners. She didn’t have any form of training with a lot in her previous home and left a few challenges and behaviors to work through. With our private lessons, we were able to cover a lot and then with group classes and hiking adventures, we proofed the rest of the behaviors in real life distraction. It’s a total blast to have Jetta on these hikes and groups and still attends them today! Now she’s a very happy, free dog that comes when called, excellent around children and just an awesome family dog. Way to go Ashlee and Jetta! R***r - also started our puppy to adulthood training from the time he was 10 weeks old. The goal was for him to be a great all found family dog including with the grand-kids and a wonderful companion that they could trust to take outside with them and anywhere they go. We started R***r off on the right foot and had him reliably off leash by the time he was 6 months old - which is amazing and can happen with dedicated owners. He was able to run in a wide open field with or without other dogs or animals and know that he was going to come back to his owner, every time, on the first command! He’s truly a great all around dog, gentle spirit and we have accomplished our goals with him and more! His owners take him everywhere they go and they receive the question “is he a service dog” because of how well behaved he is when he’s ‘working’ in public. R***r is a lot of fun on our BK9 hikes & Group Classes with complete off leash obedience and freedom. Amazing work Nicole & R***r! Want to get started with your puppy?
