Great discussions about drive development and maintaining focus while working with your dog. If your dog has a high ball or prey drive, it can sometimes interfere with learning new behaviors.
What does this mean?
- Is the ball drive too intense?
- Are you struggling with unwanted behaviors when the ball is present?
- Are responses too sloppy or shortcuts being taken for the reward (ball)?
- Are you too sloppy with handling the ball?
- Is there a lack of a clear "out" or "drop it" command?
If you’re answering yes to these questions, how do you break down the high-value reward to effectively train your dog?
Do you keep the high-value reward in your pocket until the behavior is completed? If so, how do you manage distractions if a ball is present?
These are common concerns for this dog's owner, and I'm sure others may struggle the same.
We don't want to diminish the drive, but we also want to avoid regressing in established behaviors and responses.
So, what’s the solution?
We have a system designed to channel that drive into positive outcomes while keeping drive intact. This involves maintaining high standards without shortcuts, which requires skill, timing, and education on the owner's part. Isolating and separating particular things so there are no foggy areas for both owner and dog. Our approach focuses on clarity, building confidence, and fostering a strong relationship with your dog.

The puppies learned luring exercises, movement, place, recall, engagement, how to grab attention, marker/clicker work, grooming and touch exercises, heeling, play, and more in just 4 weeks Some of the most dedicated owners.
We're going to soon do another puppy class mid or late Aug to Sept and plan to deepen dive into things so useful for your pup's future.

I had a wonderful opportunity last night to not only watch the Lunenburg premiere of "Great White North" but also to meet the main crew in front of the camera for the new 'Shark Week' docu-series on Discovery.
There were many fascinating questions about the Great White Sharks in our Nova Scotia waters. I learned that there are many more than expected, including some that have been spotted as far in as Maitland Bridge (Liverpool) and into Lunenburg Harbour. They are being catalogued through images, and those that can have trackers successfully placed on them as well.
Though it is not entirely certain how many are in our local waters, I got to talk one-on-one with the Director of 'Great White North,' Producer from Tell Tale Productions, as well as the Tech Expert, to specifically ask them dog-related questions for our beloved pets who enjoy coastal waters.
They mentioned that very shallow water is okay, but some of them will never take their dogs back in the water again. They also noted that the shark's preferred attack method is to come straight up from the bottom and along the shore where seals tend to reside.
One important thing I learned is that if you see a seal or seals in the water, which we have a population of half a million, it's wise to get out and get your dog out too(ASAP), as sharks are usually not far away.
It was a great evening, and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to ask questions to leading experts documenting their expedition and research.

The muzzle. 😱
Amazing, valuable tool. Often seen as negative for those less understanding, but it's absolutely the opposite. When you see a dog in a muzzle, this means that the dog IS loved. Whoever owns this dog or is training this dog, truly cares for this dog.💖
We were at the vets, and it's a responsible measure to do this. With proper training and intro, this can be comfortable for them while maintaining safety for them and around them.
Because he's trained to wear them, this is one less stress for him, keeping all of his vet visits a positive space. 🏥 He can wear a basket muzzle or his protection muzzle (seen here... and yes, we know he looks like Hannibal 🙄). We had to get pretty close to his face, with some direct handling and pokes, so we opted for this muzzle in particular, where it was for a very short time. Many can use a sturdy basket style muzzle.
No matter what breed you have, dogs can become stressed with things they're not continually going to or comfortable with. Especially when they're going to a place with their space being invaded and usually poked at. One way you can absolutely help them, is by handling and rewarding, as well as getting them muzzle trained. Take small steps and make it rewarding. You only need 3-7 min of training a day to get started. If your dog is uncomfortable, you may be moving too fast for them. Take smaller steps while making progress.
As for our vet visit, this dog is cherished. This dog is loved and he was pitch perfect for his handling, because we prepared in a multitude of ways to make all these visits flow.

We had a fantastic puppy class that emphasized human-to-dog socialization. We practiced swapping handlers to ensure puppies get used to being handled by different people, which is crucial for their interactions with vets, groomers, people they're going to interact with around them, and trainers. We paid close attention to each puppy's comfort levels and taught them how to settle when excited. Additionally, we worked on engagement exercises, place training, and focus work, and everyone made great progress. I'm incredibly proud of each participant's development. Fulfillment comes in many forms, and it doesn't always have to be "genetic fulfillment". 😊 👩🎓Working with your dog so they can achieve a base level of obedience (come, sit or down stay, street heel or loose heel), makes for a dependable dog off leash, which makes for a free, reliable dog. No stress. They will always respond when you call or give command while keeping their full personality intact. But that relies on YOU! Why? You have to show your dog and teach them HOW to react/respond while maintaining a great connection. It's not exactly about the tools you use, even though they can be an amazing aid in the process, it's about how you interact, how you engage your dog and how valuable you make your time with them. ✨️ Do you work with their food, their ball, their treats? 💕It really hit me....💕 Don't blink or you can miss it... One day, just petting him and looking in his eyes, realizing how short they are here in comparison to our lives. Just doesn't seem fair. I wish they lived longer. The bond you share with an animal is not measurable, yet there is a deep connect. They heal us in ways we cannot fathom. I'm just so thankful to have this dog part of my life, and will always cherish this being with my heart. Becky Herman www.bk9.ca Photo Information: Jetta (left) & R***r (right) Jetta - started our puppy-hood to adulthood training after she was returned to the breeder from a previous home and then re-homed. She started training at about 4 months with her current owners. She didn’t have any form of training with a lot in her previous home and left a few challenges and behaviors to work through. With our private lessons, we were able to cover a lot and then with group classes and hiking adventures, we proofed the rest of the behaviors in real life distraction. It’s a total blast to have Jetta on these hikes and groups and still attends them today! Now she’s a very happy, free dog that comes when called, excellent around children and just an awesome family dog. Way to go Ashlee and Jetta! R***r - also started our puppy to adulthood training from the time he was 10 weeks old. The goal was for him to be a great all found family dog including with the grand-kids and a wonderful companion that they could trust to take outside with them and anywhere they go. We started R***r off on the right foot and had him reliably off leash by the time he was 6 months old - which is amazing and can happen with dedicated owners. He was able to run in a wide open field with or without other dogs or animals and know that he was going to come back to his owner, every time, on the first command! He’s truly a great all around dog, gentle spirit and we have accomplished our goals with him and more! His owners take him everywhere they go and they receive the question “is he a service dog” because of how well behaved he is when he’s ‘working’ in public.
