Update on new rules for traveling to the USA with your dog.

CDC has changed their rules again for movement of dogs from low risk for rabies countries to the US.

It’s quite simple, logical and straightforward now.

Owners must complete the new online CDC Dog Import Form
Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival
Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry or return to the U.S.
Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.
Rabies vaccine up to date.

Hope this helps all those with future travel plans to the USA

Our July and August hours! Reminder we are only open some Saturdays. Hope everyone is having a good summer ☀️

Vaccines are available to protect your pet against a variety of diseases, from rabies and Lyme disease to infectious hepatitis, transmitted to dogs in many ways including contact with f***s, urine, nasal discharge, or eye discharge of infected dogs.
A vaccine is a preparation that trains the body’s immune system to fight disease-causing organisms. If the immune system has “seen” an unfamiliar microbe (bacteria or virus) as part of a vaccine, it’s better able to fight if it “sees” (i.e., is exposed to) the same microbe again. Antibodies are what help the body fight infection and protect it from getting the same illness again. Vaccinations are intended to reduce the severity of an illness, and/or prevent the disease entirely, by creating immunity. That’s why vaccinations are also called immunizations.
Call us today with any questions and to check in and make sure your cats and dogs are protected and up to date on their vaccines.

Be Careful of Coyotes and other wildlife! There have been reports of a coyote pack in the Mountain Brow & Fennel area.

Coyotes are a risk to your pets and children. They are scared of humans by nature. In rural areas, they hunt sheep, poultry and calves. In urban areas, they damage garden crops, go through garbage and prey on pets such as cats and small dogs.

In the event that a coyote, dog or other wild animal is presenting an immediate threat to public safety, residents are encouraged to call the Police or Animal Services.

PROTECT CHILDREN AND PETS
Educate Children to not approach or harass any wildlife or unfamiliar domestic pets. This will reduce the risk of bites or exposure to certain diseases.
Keep cats indoors at all times and keep dogs on short leashes or enclosed in your yard.
Allowing pets to roam at large increases their risk of injury by wild animals, other domestic animals, and traffic. City of Hamilton by-laws prohibit dogs and cats from running at large.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A COYOTE
Carry a personal audible alarm and flashlight or umbrella (which can be used to scare them off)
If you are approached by a coyote, stay calm and wait until they move on. You can make yourself appear larger and shout or clap your hands together or make some other loud noise to scare them off.
DO NOT RUN.
HOW TO KEEP COYOTES OFF YOUR PROPERTY
To prevent coyotes from entering your yard, enclose it with a solid fence preferably 1.8 meters in height.
Properly store and maintain garbage containers. This will prevent raccoons, skunks, cats, dogs, & coyotes from becoming a nuisance. It will also discourage the presence of small rodents, which are an important food source for coyotes.
Remove pet food left outside.
Avoid composting meat products. The smell of the meat composting will attract the animals to your property.
Do not approach or feed coyotes. Coyotes are wild animals, however can become more comfortable with humans as a result of regular contact. There may be more contact between coyotes and humans if they are fed or otherwise encouraged to stay near residential areas.
Remove bird feeders as they also attract squirrels and rodents, which may attract coyotes.
Use motion-sensitive lights in yards or gardens. Well-lit yards or the use of motion- sensitive lighting will make a property less attractive for coyotes and other nocturnal wildlife.

As most of you know, it’s Heartworm season. We love the weather but hate the bugs! Please give us a call or email to book your dogs in for a Heartworm/Lyme test and to start prevention. It’s important that our cat friends are on prevention as well, even if they are indoors. Mosquitoes always seem to find a way inside!

It's that time of year again! Heartworm season is here and we want to make sure your pets are protected. This time of year we want to make sure that our pets are on prevention meds for Fleas, Ticks, Heartworm and intestinal parasites.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million dogs are heartworm positive nationwide. Since prevention is the only way to protect your pet, it’s a simple matter of consulting your vet about an oral preventative medication at your next veterinary appointment. Heartworm medications kill any existing heartworm larvae that were transmitted since the last monthly treatment, so they don’t have the chance to cause health problems.

An annual blood test and preventative oral medication are the best weapon against heartworms. The combination of an annual test along with a scheduled dose of monthly heartworm preventative at home is the most effective way to help protect your pet from this disease.

Signs of Heartworm Disease in Dogs
In the early stages of heartworm disease, many dogs will show few symptoms or worse, no symptoms at all. The longer the infection is present, the more likely symptoms will develop. It’s important to get your dog tested, and onto a course of preventive treatment if your vet recommends it. ** Heartworm is transmitted through infected mosquitoes.

Signs of heartworm disease in dogs may include:

*Mild persistent cough
*Lethargy/avoids exertion
*Fatigue after moderate activity
*Decreased appetite
*Weight loss

Gagemount will be holding some Saturday Heartworm Clinic days where our technicians will be doing the heartworm & lyme testing and then sending you home with prevention meds for not only those pesky fleas and ticks but also for the heartworm and intestinal parasites. We will be open Saturday, May 11th, May 25th and June 1st. Call today to set up your dog's heartworm & lyme testing so your furry loved ones can be properly protected from those pesky little bugs.**We are also still offering this service from Monday to Friday**

(** please note on these Saturday Heartworm Clinic days there is no doctor present, it is strictly for the heartworm & lyme disease blood tests & being sent home with prevention meds**)

Thanks,

HaPpY VeTeRiNaRy ReCePtiONiSt Appreciation week!!
Our receptionist/client care representative/superstar Jackie is one of the many hardworking, caring, and compassionate front desk superheroes in the animal care profession. Jackie, like many other veterinary receptionists not only help to keep the practice running smoothly, from being the first person you talk to or see when you come in, to helping you get your pets weighed and checked in, making sure all your pets needs are met, questions answered or directed to the veterinarian, medications and food ready, billing and pet insurance submitted, to helping assisting our technicians and doctors when needed. Veterinariany receptionists really have their hands in all areas of the hospital and play a very important role in the team. Let's all take the time this week to thank Jackie and show her some love and appreciation for all she does. Thanks, Jackie!! The team here at Gagemount couldn't do it without you!! And special thanks too for always making us laugh

We want to take this time to inform you that as we approach our most busy time of the year, we do hope for your kindness, patience and understanding. We ask that you give plenty of notice when you are in need of medication renewals or food pick ups. When calling the clinic if you do not get through straight away please consider leaving us a voicemail or waiting a bit before then calling back right away. The reason your call goes unanswered is because we are assisting with other client and patient needs as well as the potential of any emergencies that may come in. Your call along with your requests for booking appointments, renewing meds, ordering food and asking for advice are very important to us. Please know we will always get back to you in a timely manner and that multiple calls can tie up our lines and delay our time in responding. We appreciate your loyalty, kindness, patience and understanding.
Thank you,
The team at Gagemount Animal Hospital

Often we find our feline friends go unprotected against Fleas, Ticks and Heartworm. It’s extremely important that we make sure to protect them, just as we would our canine pals. We are finding more and more indoor cats are being exposed to these icky critters. They are no longer just an outdoor issues. Windows get open in the summer time, bugs can use us and our dogs as free rides into homes and cars. Let’s prevent diseases and protect our cats this and every summer♥️

Please reach out to us for Flea/Tick and Heartworm prevention for your cats
