It’s Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend, the biggest shopping event of the year. After two of the most challenging years for any small business owners, its important we shop local this year! This is our biggest opportunity to raise our communities up and support the makers and artisans of our home towns!

I visited the this week and saw so many amazing locally made products from food, to skin care, clothing and beyond. I supported a few and bought some new products to try myself (an early Christmas present if you will). Then I thought why not make a local holiday gift guide to share some of the amazing businesses in my community.

So I’m sharing with you a small list (Because I can’t fit them all) of my favourite products we regularly use in our home and life all made by or sold by local businesses. I’ve also included a list of makers markets and farm markets I’ve visited in Durham region that are filled with local goodies you can do your holiday shopping at! So please remember in the midst of all the sales today, dont forget to shop small ❤️

Happy Friday! 🍁 In honor of fall and the beautiful autumn leaves coming to an end as cold weather approaches, I thought we’d play a little game to kick off the weekend.

It’s called reality check. Scroll to the second image of this post, and tell me how many of the brands you can name? Probably all of them right. Now what about the leaves? Could you tell me what tree each leaf comes from?

The purpose of this exercise is to show us how out of touch with nature we are as a society. Our ancestors would likely be able to identify all of these leaves with ease, but in the modern world our headspace is instead taken up by advertising, marketing and the latest ‘it’ thing. It’s sad if you really think about it.

I’m someone who considers myself quite connected and rooted in nature, but I only got 4 right. How did you do? Tell me your guesses in the comments, and I’ll let you know how many you got right! 🌟

Gluten Free Apple Cider Donuts! 🍎 I got a mini donut tray at the beginning of the month that I’ve been dying to use and I finally made the perfect recipe to break it in with. We received a jug of my favourite freshly pressed apple cider in our CSA from last week, so I used it as the inspiration for this recipe!

These donuts will remind you of fun filled afternoons spent at the farm enjoying all the fall festivities, like apple picking and corn mazes! They’re jam packed with apple flavor, the warming spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, and finished off with a light sugar dusting. They make the perfect fall treat!

Full recipe is on the blog 😉 which is now live and linked in my bio!! Be sure to save this post for a quick grocery list if you’re looking to bake them, and let us know what you think if you do 🤗

Fennel // this was a successful grow in our garden! Planted in August and harvested early October. The plant is composed of fronds, stalks and a bulb; all of which are edible (aside from the root).

Have you ever tried this strange vegetable? We grew it because my dad loves it in his salads, but I’d actually never tried any up until now. So yesterday after our harvest I did!

Raw fennel tastes similar to the texture of celery, but with flavor of black licorice or anise. It’s uncanny, probably because it has the same chemical compound Anethole as both the licorice and anise plant.

Fennel is an excellent source of Vitamin C, potassium and fiber. It has a long history of use in the Mediterranean, with association to the good Dionysus. It has been traditionally used in Europe for decades as a digestive ailment.

In herbal medicine this plant is referred to as an intestinal antispasmodic (relieves intestinal cramping), a carminative (relieves gas), a stomachachic (tones and strengthens the stomach), and a anodyne (relieves or soothes pain). Overall as you can see it’s great for improving your digestion!

You can add this versatile veggie to your soups, salads or use it’s unique spice in dishes to add a beneficial boost for your digestive tract!

Have you tried fennel before, did you like it?

HYDRATION 🌊 // My acne has flared this week because of an accidental gluten bombing, so what’s the easiest most inexpensive way I’m helping heal my skin at home? Drinking enough water!

Our body is made up of 60-70% water, water we eliminate a portion of every day in normal body functions but sometimes forget to replenish. It’s recommended you drink between 7-8 glasses but that’s all circumstantial based on your lifestyle, climate, activity level and diet. I’m very petite so I’m actually happy around the 6 glass mark, any more and I feel like I’ll float away!

Water plays a key role in so many body functions beyond keeping our skin hydrated and glowing. It helps your brain - keeping you focused, it aids in removing toxins and wastes from the body via the kidneys and lymph, it helps digestion, absorption and so much more!

So make sure you pour yourself a glass or two of water today. Quality is important, but we’ll get to that later in a full blog post. (New website coming soon!)

Do you have any tips or tricks to remember drinking your water or met your daily water goal? Share them below to help others stay hydrated!

I can’t believe it’s already March. I’m so excited realizing that summer is just around the corner, so much so that I decided to buy a farm CSA share! What’s a CSA share? It stands for community supported agriculture, where you buy a “share” of the farms harvest and get to really know the farmers who grow your food.

A personal goal of mine is to eat food grown as close to home as possible, and support Ontario farmers. The future of Agriculture is incredibly important to me, so this year I decided to invest in locally grown fruit & veg all season long. This way we have fresh food all summer and into fall, and we get to try new varieties we may not have on our own. It will be a creative season in the kitchen that’s for sure!
