Did you know one act can change a lot of lives? 🐾

Because World Spay Day is coming up this Tuesday, February 25, we’re chatting about spay and neuters today.

Why is spaying/neutering so important?

✔ Reduces stray populations, preventing overcrowded shelters.

✔ Prevents health issues like mammary cancers and urinary problems.

✔ Stops unwanted litters, helping reduce the number of pets in shelters.

Last year, we chatted about this topic with Linda Felix from Spay Day HRM and all the wisdom is still relevant today. 🤩 You can listen to the episode here if you haven’t had a chance yet:

Chance’s Story! ❤️

They say love is all about second chances – and I sure got mine. ✨

I was cold, hungry, and alone, a stray with no one to turn to. My body was weak, struggling, and I wasn’t sure how much longer I could hang on. But sometimes, life deals you an unexpected hand. 🃏

Then, I got lucky. A team in blue came to my rescue and brought me to the Nova Scotia SPCA, where I received the care I needed to heal. Slowly but surely, I grew stronger – like a hand of cards shuffled in my favour. 🙏

And just when I thought my heart couldn’t get any fuller, I found my new loving family. 🏡

From a lonely, desperate pup to a dog who now gets all the love I could ask for – I’ve won the jackpot.

But not every pet is as lucky as I am. Many still need that second chance. With your love and support, you can help them win the game of life.

Will you deal them a winning hand and give them all the love this Love Month? 💖

Please donate at www.novascotiaspca.ca/chance to give local pets the care they need and the love they deserve. Your support will help pets like me start fresh with a full heart and a second chance. 💙

Sage and Sarah were ready for a new furry companion. 🐶 They kept an eye on the Nova Scotia SPCA adoption page, scrolling through the pictures of big, hopeful eyes. At the time, they were looking for a puppy. But Lucy proved to them that sometimes the right choice isn’t about what you expect. 🥰

In September 2024, Enforcement officers brought Meadow to the Cape Breton Shelter. She required extensive medical care, but she proved to be a trooper. 🥺 Friendly, social, and with a lot of love to offer, she was ready for adoption one month later. It took only a few moments for her soulful eyes to capture the hearts of her new family and for them to choose a special new name for her. 💙

“If I brush my teeth, why not my pets too?” 😁

Last year, Dr. Mike West dove into how pet dental care is essential and could even be fun!

It might have been a year since the PAW’dcast episode came out, but it is still full of golden tips and tricks to keeping your pets' pearly whites healthy this Pet Dental Health Month such as:

🔹 Starting early and making a routine

🔹Starting brushing with your finger then slowly introducing a toothbrush

🔹 Flavoured toothpaste could help turn brushing into an exciting experience

🔹 And making sure you use the right size toothbrush.

If you want to hear more, you can listen to the episode at the link below and on Spotify and Apple Podcasts by searching Nova Scotia SPCA PAW’dcast. ⬇️

Sometimes, the perfect match is an older cat with so much love to give. Trixie, a nine-year-old Calico with arthritis, waited patiently in foster care until Grace found her. ✨ Adopting an adult cat wasn’t just a good decision for Grace – it was the best one she ever made. Now, their days are filled with cuddles, playtime, and a bond that proves second chances can lead to the happiest endings. 😻

Did you know that by age three, 80% of dogs and cats show signs of dental disease? This is why dental health is important for the overall well-being of pets, just as it is for humans.

With Nova Scotia SPCA Pet Health Insurance, pet insurance provides coverage for dental treatments every year (up to your plan limit). This can include routine dental cleanings, pre-anesthetic diagnostic testing, tooth extractions and more!

Cold weather isn’t just tough on hoomans, but on our pets too. Yes, even those who love winter. ❄

So, we decided to put ourselves in our pet’s paws as much as possible. Deputy Chief Inspector with the Nova Scotia SPCA, Paul Hunter, sat outside for 15 minutes at -11 degrees to show the dangers of leaving your pets outside in the cold. After only five minutes, his body was fighting the drop in temperature. 🥶

Check out the full video below for tips on what to look for when your pet starts getting cold AND what to do if you find an animal in distress. ⬇

It’s always better to let them snuggle up inside!

If you see a pet left outside in the cold, remember to ACT. A-C-T. ❗

A – Assess the situation.
C – Collect information.
T – Time to call the Nova Scotia SPCA at 1-888-703-7722, email [email protected], or fill out the online form at: www.novascotiaspca.ca/reportcruelty.

When James O’Halloran set out on a four-hour drive to the SPCA’s North Nova Shelter in Pictou, he thought he and his wife Joanne were going to adopt a kitten they had seen online. 🤗 But as soon as he met Ruckus, a fluffy orange adult cat, he knew she was the one he would be taking home. 😻

Lunenburg SPCA

Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
