Humane Services St. John's The City of St. John’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre is located at 81 Higgins Line. The Centre can house up to 65 cats & 20 dogs. Government Organization

Our facility is state of the art with five cat rooms including outdoor access and a dog area with outdoor runs & playpen.

Like people, pets are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and generally should be kept inside during cold weather. No pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather. 🐾🐾

Meet Benny, a giant puppy, just 11 months old.

Two things are certain with Benny, his mouth either holds his big blue ball or a giant smile.

He’s a bouncy, energetic boy who needs lots of regular exercise. A home without cats would be best for Benny and introduction of any dogs would happen before adoption.

We love getting adoption updates, especially during the holiday season. To see pets settled in with their new families for Christmas truly warms our hearts.

You may remember Zeus (now Murphy) from a previous post. He hit the jackpot with his new home! Murphy has been on his best behavior and has fit in with his new canine siblings perfectly.
Regis (now Otis) adores his new Xmas sweater and is so grateful to be hanging out with his new family around the Christmas tree.

Just a friendly reminder of our shelter hours for the busy holiday season. Although our hours of operation will be reduced over the next few weeks, our dedicated staff will be behind closed doors ensuring the animals are well cared for and kept company🎅

December 22-26, 2024 Closed

December 29-January 1, 2025 Closed

January 2, 2025 Resume Regular Hours

UPDATE: I've been adopted!!!🐾💜

PIC 1….The backdrop I was supposed to sit in front of in hopes of a Christmas Miracle and finding a home.

PIC 2….What I did while my pic was supposed to be taken, I sat in my friend’s lap and snuggled.

PIC 3…. Bundled up to go for a walk.

Hi my name is Jack. I am a middle-age gentleman. I am completely house trained and a very quiet, obedient boy. I love other doggies.
I know my commands, and all I want to do is sit in the lap of a human and cuddle. My friends say I am very low maintenance.

If you are looking for a loyal, mature boy with lots of love to give, fill out an application and come meet me. I dare you not to fall in love with my humungous, velvety ears.

Our animals are ready for the holidays here at the shelter and are patiently awaiting Santa's arrival. 🐾
We wanted to remind all pet owners that it's a busy time of year for pets too. Please ensure that your pets are safely contained during holiday parties and fireworks displays.

UPDATE:
Fantastic news! Pattie Cakes has been adopted🙂

🐾Pattie's BEFORE and AFTER transformation🐾

Day 1
Pattie had shut down in terms of human interaction. No eye contact, crouching low and zero confidence.

Day 2
Pattie's interest in us slowly started to show. Although fearful, she looked to us for guidance and responded well to taking treats by hand.

Day 3
Pattie is interacting with us and looking to play. She is learning about what toys are and how to get human attention.

Day 4
Pattie is the perfect dog. Loving, playful and ready to find a new family. She is jumping around like a pup and acting as a happy dog should.

UPDATE:
Jenny and Rose have been adopted! Pepper is still waiting and we have found out that he gets along great with other cats. Stevie is still available too🙂

💜🐾 We have a color pattern trend
going on at the shelter 🐾💜

At the present time, we have a high number of brown tabby cats!
They came to us from different areas and for various reasons.
We'd love to see them go to loving homes🙂

Both of the handsome boys have been adopted!!!

🐕🐕LARGE BREED ADOPTION ALERT🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺

Anyone who owns a large dog knows they:

🐾 are big bundles of love
🐾 are gentle, goofy giants
🐾 are showstoppers that rarely go unnoticed
🐾 require a lot of space to play
🐾 are intelligent and quick to learn new tricks

Jackson (Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix) and Beck (Boxer) are both looking for new homes🙂
Beck is a young neutered male Boxer and Jackson (will be neutered) is approx 4 years of age.

Another senior cat looking to find his owner!

Poor Buffy (not real name) was found on Southside Road and may have been missing for quite some time. He is neutered, thin and appears to be an older, senior cat.
Buffy is extra friendly and loves to be cuddled.
He purrs and kneads on his fleece blankets as soon as someone talks to him.

Gordie, a neutered male, was hit by a car and provided with emergency vet care over the weekend😞 He was struck in the Torbay Road/NF Drive area and we are now looking to locate his owner.

Update on our bunnies:

Since the bunny takeover of our kitten room in May, we are now down to 4.

Rupert and Brandy are a bonded pair and are up for adoption together.

Butterfly is extra friendly and is an exceptionally social rabbit.

Bon Bon is easy going and enjoys munching on her veggies.

Diesel has it all if you are up for an active, friendly giant pup. He is approx 8 months of age and will be getting his big boy surgery tomorrow here at the shelter. Just one interaction with him and you'll be hooked.

🐾UPDATE AS PROMISED🐾

We wanted to update all of our followers on the baby mushroom kittens: Portobello, Button, Porcini, Shiitake and Cremini🙂🐾

Thanks to all who showed interest in our "happy ending" post. We are happy to report that 4 of the 5 rescued kittens have been spoken for and will be going to their homes soon. There is still one baby left and we are currently accepting applications on her.

Thanks again to all who inquired, shared and liked their happy reunion adventure😽

Banana attack at the shelter! Charlie is looking for a new home where she can continue her assault on any banana threats 😀🍌

Have a look at these magnificent Mastiff beauties..... Nala (mom) 3 years and Kali (baby) 8 months are looking for a home together. They are gentle giants and don't realize their own strength. Their main goal is to be cuddly lap dogs despite their size. We're looking for a home without small children and preferably someone with large breed experience.
