Had the pleasure of kick starting this little cuties training journey the other day. Bella is a sweet 9 week old Labrador with an amazing temperament. I'm really starting to fall in love with this breed. We have too many dogs for the time being but this is definitely something to think about in the future 🥰

One of my favorite activities during the summer is going to music festivals (like this one in the video! @mvmfestival) or farmers markets. When I pay for things, I ask Bluey to down stay. When I eat a snack, she down stays. ✨️ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT ✨️ Meet Bentley! We met while shopping at @adrmarkham and we are on our second class together. His mom and pop have put in a tremendous amount of work and he's already showing great progress. His ability to respond to vocal commands is coming along amazingly and we are making strides in his resource guarding. We still have 2 classes left together. SHIBAS CAN'T BE OFF LEASH! If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me Shibas were impossible to train I would've adopted 1000 dogs on a 500 acre estate by now 😂 The more "difficult" and "stubborn" breeds are extremely smart. They have an independent mindset and will challenge you but consistency is key here! Akari has been off leash since 8 months old and when I tell people that recall is the last thing on my list for off leash dogs, they're so surprised. There's so much more to off leash reliability than a good Recall. Food refusal, neutrality to people, dogs, wildlife, these are just to name a few. Without these skills, you'd be calling your dog every 10 seconds. Thresholds!! Why are they important? Meet Scout! This cutie was adopted into a loving home from Mexico ♡ This is our first session dealing with Thresholds to make sure Scout doesn't take off at the sight of an open door. There has been an increase of lost dogs recently, so I wanted to make a video addressing this issue. I've helped so many dog owners work on this skill to help build some impulse control and the energy on their walks. If your walk starts with charging out, they will certainly be more likely to pull. What does threshold training help with? - pulling on walks - doordashing - lowered stress levels when having guests or small children in the house (for the humans!) - daily practice with teaching dogs boundaries I could go on and on about the benefits of this skill that can be practiced every time you take your dog out for a walk! If you haven't started yet, make this your Day 1! Training is a lifestyle ❤️ Oftentimes I work with families that believe they have no time to train their dog. If you're doing it right you shouldn't have to for more than 20 minutes a day :) I like to remind my students that dog training is a lifestyle. Not a course that is completed and done with. Any time I find an opportunity to train while doing my regular tasks I take it! Watching TV? Place Shoveling snow? Down Stay Folding Laundry? Crate Going to shop at places that allow dogs? Leash manners, engagement, environmental exposure, and so much more! Remember, training your dog is a marathon not a sprint! Don't burn yourself out in your first year. Here at Sumairi Shiba House, our focus is the healthy, happy lives of our Shiba Inus. Our breeding program has been in the works since 2015. Since then, we’ve searched all around the world to find extremely healthy and beautiful shibas that have amazing temperaments.

At SSH, we understand our shibas and commit to giving them a happy life for the rest of their lives. Our goal is to get them to their forever homes from the day they leave SSH :)

In order to ensure we do everything to stick with our commitment, all interested families will need to complete an application process. We also have a puppy orientation when picking up the new member of your family. We will then run you through what to expect, training methods and tips, along with some other useful first aid information.

However, the journey doesn’t end there! You and your new companion will have a lifetime to bond and learn from one another, SSH will be there every step of the way. Each year, we check in on our little pups to wish them a happy birthday along with a mailed care package!
