About the Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan malamute is the largest and oldest of the sled dog breeds. This powerful animal is designed to pull heavy sledges over long distances at a moderate speed. These are the "work horses" of the dog world. Today, the versatile malamute excels in a variety of activities, such as: recreational and competitive sledding, ski-joring, search and rescue and therapy work. You name it, a malamute can do it, and they may just make a fool out of you in the process! A malamute's reputation proceeds him/her as a class clown, a real "ham, who thrives on being the centre of attention."
A highly intelligent and athletic breed, malamutes require plenty of physical and mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored, depressed, or destructive. Like their wild cousins, they are pack oriented and will try to test pack order from an early age on into adulthood. The ideal type of person for a malamute is assertive, strong-willed and able to maintain "leader" status with a firm, yet fair disposition. As a northern breed, the malamute is designed to run, dig and pull. These tendencies are innate in them, as is a strong predatory streak. Forwarned is forarmed, as they say! Early formal training is a MUST with this breed and will have to be reinforced regularly throughout their life. The malamute demonstrates a strong affection to all humans, not just their own, and for this reason they do not perform well at guard duties.
If you are considering life with a malamute, continue to do as much research as possible. The more prepared you are, the fewer suprises you will have. Keep in mind that the cute, fluffy malamute puppy will be nearly full size by six months of age! You will have dog fur on your clothes and furniture and dust bunnies floating around your house. Your malamute will howl, will ignore your commands and will pull on a lead. That having been said, the Alaskan malamute is a remarkable breed that will bring joy and laughter to your life!
