Proud of this father-son duo this weekend at the New Brunswick Kennel Club dog show. This Club celebrated their 500th show this weekend and we were thrilled to be a part of the fun! And the weather was superb 👌🏼☀️⛵️

Maple 🍁 blew every last hair on his body at the end of his three week break, but still managed 3 BOB wins, a Select, and a Group 4 in a beautiful Working Group from Janet Lobb on Friday show 1.

Res 🌝 won 1 BOB and 2 BOW and a Group 3 in a lovely Working Group from judge Eva Berg on Saturday. He was not entered in the 2nd show due to my tardiness with entries. He is very near completion of his. Canadian Championship! Thank you Sarah Muth and Paula Grant for helping out with Res this weekend!

Res also accompanied McKenzie in the Junior Handling ring and she did a great job showing him!

It was great fun to have my good friend and neighbour from ON, Tara, and by our side today at the show.

I’d go as far as to say that “the unique characteristics of this magnificent northern breed”, that allow them to survive in the coldest and harshest conditions on earth, are indeed a Hallmark of this breed.

We all know that the Alaskan Malamute is a sled dog for heavy freighting. The part that is often overlooked or minimized is the addendum—“in the Arctic”. Essentially, all breeds of dogs were developed by intention or by happenstance for specific purposes and functions; for hunting, draft, coursing, hunting varmints, companionship or for sport. But perhaps no other breed was as essential to its human counterparts for their very survival. Whether utilized by the semi-nomadic Inuit to move to new hunting grounds, or tracking seal and bear game, or for hauling the fruits of a successful hunt back to their villages by sensing the return route in the featureless Arctic, these dogs made possible survival in the most horrendous conditions imaginable.🐾

Things have been quiet the last few weeks here at Spiritrun headquarters in beautiful New Brunswick! We’ve had not one, but three weeks off of the show circuit and the dogs and I have appreciated time together just “being”.

We have finally planted Maple’s Best In Show garden 🪴 (plants he won!). And of course, we have been working on the barndo build. Almost ready to pour concrete into the first level of Nudura block and then backfill to stabilize the foundation. Good news… roof trusses have been ordered!

We look forward to some forthcoming shows and specialties season, but for now we are simply enjoying remarkable bug-free evenings, beautiful sunsets, and room to explore!

“Intelligent Disobedience “ describes Alaskan Malamutes to a T. I often describe them as being intelligent, independent thinkers, but not necessarily obedient. There’s definitely a difference. Think about it… You’re a musher sled directing your team with some verbal cues and you’re making a dire mistake with your decisions. Dogs with their instincts know better than you… They know that if the team turns “Gee”, they will be heading over week ice and dangerous conditions. That’s just a vague example of the innate instincts of our incredible breed.

Read what this author has to say! Makes a lot of sense! Respect dogs for what they are, what they know!

“Intelligent Disobedience” — Our blog village talks this week about dogs who don’t do what we say, and why we’re grateful for it!

I’ll bet you have your own examples! Read on: https://bit.ly/3WD8eAm

With the dog show this past weekend being in our own backyard (almost), Shelby insisted on attending for a day to visit old friends and make her presence known.

Lots of reminiscing, hugs and tears were shared. Shelby had the BEST DAY… she knew full well she was at a dog show and was free-stacking and gaiting about… at times insisting we go to the ringside (which we could not to as she was not entered, much to her dismay).

Girl still has “IT” at 13.8 years young!!!

Why Bother? – Let Us Count the Ways
By: Will Alexander

It’s been a crazy summer. Extreme heat, volatile storms, yet the dog shows go on. Picture this–me standing under an ez-up, rain and wind so bad that the water is going sideways; I have my Irish Setter on the table and my generator purring as I’m doing my best to dry him before his next ring time. A young handler walks by me, chuckles and says, “why bother?!”. Funny how a simple statement like “why bother?” stirs up memories. It was 1986–the summer circuit. I was working for Garry MacDonald. The Woodstock shows were notorious for bad weather and the skies opened up on schedule. Water came down in buckets. Garry had a number of charges but this story revolves around Lady, our Old English special. Her owner was walking her just as the storm started. She rushed her back to our set-up but the damage was done. Once settled, Garry popped Lady on the table, grabbed a dryer and handed it to his assistant–that being me–and told me I had 40 minutes until breed time. The water was filling the rings; our setup was ankle deep. Okay, I may be exaggerating a little, just a little though because it was wet! I looked up at Garry and said, “why bother?” Everything just stopped. Not the rain, but everything in my conscious world. Garry turned and said, “We are professionals William, it’s what we do. Lady is going to look perfect when she steps into that ring. Whatever happens after that is up to Mother Nature, but we need to know that we did our very best.”

I just spent a week in beautiful British Columbia. I was judging on the Saturday. My youngest son, Liam, and I had flown out the previous Wednesday and were staying until the following Wednesday. My eldest son, James, lives out there and we were going to make it a short vacation, just me and the boys. Adam was off showing somewhere so it was the three of us. With just one judging day, we had plenty of time to spend quality time together. James had planned all kinds of activities, from hiking in Stanley Park to whale watching. My son, Jamie, is an aspiring film maker. I say aspiring, but no–he is a filmmaker. He has been doing it for years, starting with a short war film he and some buddies filmed with a hand held in high school. Now he has a short entered in a million film festivals. I have no doubt Jamie will be successful in his chosen vocation...continue reading: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=291914

Reeling from this devastating news that the dog world has lost one of our legendary and classy sportsmen, Kaz Hosaka.

On a slushy dark cold February morning in 2007, my very first trip to Westminster, I loaded up my trolly and crossed 7th Avenue from the hotel Pennsylvania to Madison Square Garden and lined up at 4 AM… Bewildered and green, not knowing what I was doing. Fortunately, for me, I was lined up outside the loading door beside Kaz Hosaka. He was already famous by then, well known in the dog community. I was a little starstruck in that moment, but he was so humble he would never have noticed. In that moment, he did notice that I was as new as can be, a little lost in the dark, in the slush, on a backstreet in New York City and he kindly took me under his wing and guided me through the process of loading into Madison Square Garden for my very first Westminster Kennel Club dog show experience.

That kind of kindness, from an experienced icon in our sport, towards a newcomer, imprints onto the newcomer for the rest of their lives. I will never forget that dark, damp, cold, intimidating 4am lineup and the kindness he showed me. Never.

Let us all honour his memory by aspiring to be a little more like Kaz. May he rest in peace 💔🥺🙏🏼💐

We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Kaz Hosaka

Currently experiencing high temperatures 🥵 so use common sense when it comes to your pets.

• leave them home, indoors in climate controlled areas
• exercise in early morning or after sun down
• provide lots of fresh water
• make frozen pupsicles
• use fans
• if dogs have to be left outside, ensure there is abundant shade, and fresh water to access
• do not take them with you to run errands, or for mid-day walks

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA)🏥 has just announced their new spay & neuter guidelines.🙀 Due to growing evidence of adverse health effects of traditional gonadectomy (spay/neuter) and increases in cancers and joint disorders, WSAVA suggest the best practice for RESPONSIBLE pet parents is to leave dogs and cats unaltered (intact). Additionally noting, spaying or neutering a dog younger than 6 months of age is NOT recommended because of an increase of detrimental health risks. Acknowledging in some circumstances, such as rescues and shelters, where leaving an animal intact is not an option, they stress the importance of education and acceptance of newer, alternative sterilization techniques that have less long-term health concerns. 🙌

Discussing these alternative techniques and the pro’s and con’s today, plus much more in the Inside Scoop.

Dog Importation Regulation; New Rules will Start August 1, 2024

CDC is updating its dog importation regulation to protect the health and safety of people and animals by making sure any dog arriving in the United States is healthy and doesn’t present a risk to our communities.

Starting on August 1, 2024, all dogs entering the United States must:

Appear healthy upon arrival;
Be at least six months of age;
Be microchipped; and
Be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form online submission receipt.

Additional requirements are based on where the dog has been in the last six months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States. For dogs arriving from countries with a high risk of dog rabies, they must be protected against rabies.

The rabies virus variant carried by dogs (dog rabies) was eliminated in the United States in 2007 and CDC wants to prevent the re-introduction of dog rabies into the United States. This regulation builds on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic when a temporary suspension was enacted for the importation of dogs from countries with a high risk of rabies. This suspension will expire when the updated regulation goes into effect on August 1, 2024. The regulation also more closely aligns with the World Organisation for Animal Health’s standards for the international movement of dogs from countries with a high risk of dog rabies. Furthermore, it addresses recent challenges seen with international dog importations, such as fraudulent documentation and dogs housed in unsafe conditions if they didn’t meet requirements for entry to the United States...More information: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=286957

Maple's Harrisburg Blue-Gray Cluster wrap-up:

Sweet Redemption! MBISS MBOSS AM CAN GCHB LUELDAR ACROSS THE POND TO SPIRITRUN (IRE), TKN, CGCA, AS, "Maple" redeemed himself with judge Joan Luna Liebes at the Lebanon County KC AMCA/AMAEP SPECIALTY by *drumroll* standing still for his exam (!!!) and was awarded a Best of Opposite in Specialty win. This meant A LOT! (If anyone knows about his 2023 Westminster KC dog show performance under this very judge, you will understand this post.)

He had a good showing all week, standing for exam every day (a bit deal for this clown) and showing beautifully. On also made it through to the final cut in Specials throughout the week, holding his own in a very competitive line-up of Specials.

Maple is bred by Elaine and Darren Walker of Lueldar Kennels in Ireland. Sired by Lennox (AU) out of Dixie (IRE).

Maple is owned and loved by Edmund and Jennifer Remazki, and Darren and Elaine Walker.

April 10-14, 2024 -- Harrisburg Blue & Gray Cluster -- wrap-up for: BPIS BPISS SPIRITRUN FORCE OF NATURE AT LUELDAR, "Gibson"

Bred by Edmund & Jennifer Remazki
By Maple out of Phoenix

Owned by Luca-May Walker, Darren & Elaine Walker, Edmund & Jennifer Remazki

Gibson was a true "force of nature" at his *AKC debut* as an 11 month old, exceeding our expectations in every way. From the 9-12 Puppy Dog class, Gibson achieved the following:

On Wed. at the Harrisburg KC AMCA/AMAEP Supported Entry, Gibson was awarded Best of Winners from Raymond Yurick for a 5-point MAJOR.

On Thurs. at the Lebanon County KC AMCA/AMAEP Supported Entry, Gibson was awarded Best of Winners from Dr. Ronald Spritzer for a 5-point MAJOR.

On Fri. at the Lebanon County KC AMCA/AMAEP SPECIALTY, Gibson was awarded Winner's Dog from Joan Luna-Liebes for a 4-point MAJOR, and he was awarded Best of Opposite Specialty Sweeps by Dawn Cox.

On Sat. at both the Harrisbug KC AMCA Specialty and the Big Apple Working Dog Specialty, Gibson was awarded Reserve Winners Dog by judges Jeremy Browne and Whitney Coombs, respectively.

Breeder judge Cindy Neeley awarded Gibson a really nice SPECIALTY GRAND SWEEPSTAKES PUPPY at the Harrisburg KC AMCA Specialty on the Saturday, as well.

(Gibson did not exhibit on Sunday as that was my day to judge sweeps.)

The Spiritrun Alaskan Malamutes would like to thank Roseann Deutsch and her volunteers and committee members for once again bringing together a wonderful entry of Alaskan Malamutes by organizing an event that feels more like a family reunion than anything else.

About Spiritrun

This is a page for fans and owners of Spiritrun Alaskan Malamutes to enjoy and share. Spiritrun Registered Alaskan Malamutes is home to multiple generation Best In Show, Specialty Show, Group and Breed winners. Our malamutes work, show and play. Health, longevity, temperament, breed type and conformation are all priorities in our breeding program as we strive to create mentally & physically balanced & functional companions that thrive in active homes.

About the Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan malamute is the largest and oldest of the sled dog breeds. This powerful animal is designed to pull heavy sledges over long distances at a moderate speed. These are the "work horses" of the dog world. Today, the versatile malamute excels in a variety of activities, such as: recreational and competitive sledding, ski-joring, search and rescue and therapy work. You name it, a malamute can do it, and they may just make a fool out of you in the process! A malamute's reputation proceeds him/her as a class clown, a real "ham, who thrives on being the centre of attention." A highly intelligent and athletic breed, malamutes require plenty of physical and mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored, depressed, or destructive. Like their wild cousins, they are pack oriented and will try to test pack order from an early age on into adulthood. The ideal type of person for a malamute is assertive, strong-willed and able to maintain "leader" status with a firm, yet fair disposition. As a northern breed, the malamute is designed to run, dig and pull. These tendencies are innate in them, as is a strong predatory streak. Forwarned is forarmed, as they say! Early formal training is a MUST with this breed and will have to be reinforced regularly throughout their life. The malamute demonstrates a strong affection to all humans, not just their own, and for this reason they do not perform well at guard duties. If you are considering life with a malamute, continue to do as much research as possible. The more prepared you are, the fewer suprises you will have. Keep in mind that the cute, fluffy malamute puppy will be nearly full size by six months of age! You will have dog fur on your clothes and furniture and dust bunnies floating around your house. Your malamute will howl, will ignore your commands and will pull on a lead. That having been said, the Alaskan malamute is a remarkable breed that will bring joy and laughter to your life!
