An extremely special herd living without fences on 235,000 acres on an undulating plateau that averages 1,200 feet (370 m) above sea level. Peacefully waiting the expected rainfall during a period of extreme heat. These live in the coldest conditions a horse can handle for much of the year then take advantage of their lush green environment all summer long.

A look and a closer look at Mare and a 2023 foal. Because the horses are protected by law from interference, no one is allowed to touch them. These are unmanaged even if they are sick. Their governance leans heavily on natural selection and their non linear population numbers reflect this.

A video emerged of two women bullying a horse. This is not the first time they’ve taken a beating from us.
Don’t focus on anything else but animal welfare. From the highest levels of competition to the very beginning stages of riding - equine welfare should be the prominent focus, the very foundation of sport. If we do that collectively we will see the highest end sport horses emerge, holding fitness for an entire lifetime not just a competitive phase. Dare to explore disciplines built with compassion that aim to uncover a deep understanding. The current horse sports are not a far stretch from this, there is much to be proud of and build from!
This is okay horse friends, yes the video is hard to watch. Just take it as an opportunity to collectively refine approach to something slower, mindful and with less human ambition towards horses.
Just like we always say: don’t focus on the rider here either, just focus relentlessly on animal welfare. Take a page from the horses book and push forward just like they do.
Its often human ambition and pressure that causes our type of aggression towards the animals. Reject that when you feel it and allow yourself to exist in their world rather than ours, it’s better anyway!
Move forward with grace, determination and alongside the horses! 🤞💙🐴

One of the best things about (aside from how they can lend us freedom on their backs) is their curiosity. If they’re feeling a bit brave and curious the most gorgeous display of body language follows. Arabian horse shows really highlight this. Their elegant beauty is deeply revered in the Middle East and people accentuate that beauty by continuously trying to peak the horse’s curiosity. It is said that this is why are so intelligent and loyal.

Having originally arrived on ship wrecks, the wild horses of sable island are allowed no human intervention serving as management. Natural selection is a term used to describe this methodology on the island. This is new to me but that’s not a bad thing. I do believe gelding some of the stallions would serve the horses and island well in the long and short term, that’s imo. What do you think?

I believe observation without interference is both not possible and good at the same time. We simply can’t not alter the environment we share with such sensitive creatures however it is a great and important initiative to not interfere and just observe. 👍 If everyone just does their best with horses in most cases, that is enough and that’s a beautiful part of horse care. They are bound with humankind in one way or another - even the most wild ones have a past with us, that’s .

To be an expert with horses is to know approximately half about an unfamiliar horse or herd. The other half is just as critical and it comes from the caregivers or interestingly…the other half might be known to no human at all.

An incredibly interesting and often misunderstood wild herd off Canada’s Atlantic coast. One of a few incredible herds living near the waters edge, unbothered by the rest of the world.

Hearty mountain dwellers in the Canadian Highlands. 20k into deep wilderness, 3 knolls, steep declines and oceanfront valleys. Narrow trails and traverses near vertical slopes and cliffs, often rough with loose rocks. These horses navigate it all like mountain goats in their lush land filled with grasses and fresh water. Their herd existence is sometimes criticized for not having enough “care”. Some people just don’t get the call of the wild. 🤘🏼 Ride on friends.
You gotta love ‘em big & bad ones the best! It sets you up for success with horses because truly, no matter what their sex status is, they can all show boisterous body language at times. I hope I pronounced epididymis correctly. We learned about that at agricultural college in between hitching horses up to our dorm rooms overnight. 😘 Thanks for watching and more to come after this busy period at our production houses as per our stories from today. X Special thanks to the now owner of this special horse. She is a true horsewoman who set up this beast with the best forever home. ♥️
#Stallions and colts are incredibly beautiful to observe and train with. Safety should always be the top most priority when dealing with #horses or any animals. Like any mare owner or rider will tell you, it’s all horses and not just stallions that you should never let your guard down around. Typically stallions are mostly ridden by advanced trainers, the consensus being due to their unpredictability. Personally I find that to be what makes them so interesting. While treating them with respect and a healthy dose of fear (I’m not ashamed to admit) I love observing them in their natural habitat and working with them under saddle. Eventually I would love to share more stallion content about the very first horse I owned. Thank you for watching 🙏
In the initial stages, jumping is easy if you have the correct foundation to set both horses and riders up for success. You know you are on the right track if you have a stable of horses from all walks of life and body condition scores jumping in a similar fashion with little or no vices like the run out or refusal. Run outs and refusals do happen from time to time but watch out for if it’s a common trend among a group, that can be an indication of not quite being on the right track. Interestingly by developing balance on the flat if you then add a fence it doesn’t make much difference as far as the horse is concerned. It’s all about setting them up for success, allowing them to do it themselves!
Let’s talk about #weaning a #foal from its #mare Vid during countless night checks, some good and some that would never end. How do you like to wean foals?
Rosettes are extremely great and important, but have you established a connection big or small without equipment between you and the horse? This could be in the form of a glance in your direction, at first. Get on their level, which takes a lot of time observing and just being with them. Notice the small body language nuances before their massive movements. Can you effect a change of their direction without using touch? Are they recognizing you for real? It’s not always about forming a bond although that’s an important result. It’s about your understanding of horse behaviour. This understanding should be established well before entering the show ring.
If it’s got legs it’s eventually gonna show up even a little lame. How do you spot lameness? How to you remedy it? I like to keep it simple with horses and while I do back off the work if they are unsound - I’m usually leery of resting horses completely unless of course that’s what the vet says to do under any and all circumstances. I’m not suggesting we go against medical advice, what I am suggesting is to recognize that #horse power is a real thing and to stop wrapping them in bubble wrap. Way too often people put their insecurities into #animal care. The kind of help they need from us sometimes isn’t actually our help at all. Set them up for success and let them find a way. #KickEmLoose #GetErDone #RideOn and above all remember horses need our respect and not our pity.
