Gisele here 🙋🏻♀️ founder and team leader at .ca sharing a pretty major milestone in my career.
With over a decade of experience working with dogs in a multitude of industries (veterinary, shelter, pet care), my biggest takeaway to date is most definitely ~ whatever you knew is old news ~
In the pet care industry alone, we have some of the largest unregulated and *essential* professions in the world operating on super outdated anecdotal methods that cause serious long-term harm to an entire species. Largely unaware of the profound impacts of their own actions, those well-intentioned humans are missing a piece of the puzzle: science.
The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) is the leading independent certifying organization for the dog training profession. There are folks out there investing an incredible amount of time and resources into promoting a minimum ethical standard and a basic understanding of behavior sciences from those working so closely with our dogs on a daily basis.
To achieve their Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed certification, I submitted:
• hundreds of hours in training log from the past three years
• a statement from a CCPDT trainer 🙏🏼
• my commitment to their Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) Effective Behavior Intervention strategy
• my commitment to their continuous education requirements: yearly webinars, courses and conferences on the most current and progressive training methods
• and wrote a pretty dang long exam 😅
If you’re living and working with dogs in any capacity, please remember that *loving dogs* is such a wonderful starting point but ~ with great love comes great responsibility ~
Let’s make our doggos proud!
