At the end of May, Phoebe’s human Mom reached out to me because Phoebe had a fall and injured her back end which compromised her mobility. We began laser sessions twice per week and the results by mid-July are reflected in the second video shown in comments.

It’s time to modernize how we sterilize dogs.

Newer, simpler surgical techniques like vasectomy and ovary-sparing spay (hysterectomy) prevent unwanted litters and deadly infections like pyometra—without removing the hormones pets need for healthy physical, metabolic, immunologic and behavioral development.

The problem? Most veterinarians were never taught how to perform these easier procedures. That makes them “specialty surgeries,” which drives up the cost—and keeps them out of shelters and everyday practices where they’re most needed.

Let’s fix this! 🙌🏼 2.0 pet parents want to support shelters, but don’t want to adopt the long-term health consequences personal experience and research demonstrates (thank goodness cats have an entirely different reproductive system and are off the hook).

Please sign my petition, below, to teach hormone-sparing sterilization techniques in veterinary schools worldwide. The next generation of veterinarians—and the animals they serve—deserve better. Petition link in comments ⬇️.

Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

In this study, researchers looked at whether the age at which dogs were spayed or neutered, meaning how long they were exposed to their natural s*x hormones, affected how healthy they were in old age. They studied a group of long-lived pet dogs to learn what helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. Dogs with the fewest age-related health problems were considered the most “robust.”

The results showed that both male and female dogs who kept their hormones longer (i.e., were spayed or neutered later) were 3 to 10 times more likely to be healthy in old age compared to those altered earlier. Once hormone exposure and age were taken into account, there was no difference in old-age health between males and females.

This study highlights how important s*x hormones may be for staying healthy later in life and shows that early-life decisions—like when to spay or neuter—can have long-term effects on health.

When I first met sweet Ria she was exhibiting pain in her back and shoulder. I treated her for this and loved every minute of the time I spent with her. Over the years I’ve been called in to laser whenever an area is giving her discomfort, and also just for maintenance, so she can stay in good form as this girl loves to jump! I continue to enjoy every session I spend with her as she has a quirky sense of humor and a good heart.

Tadhg is a reserved, cautious horse. He wants to understand your intentions and the process before he’s willing to invest his time with you. Make no mistake though, he is a character and always up for a prank.

When I was first called out to treat his right front leg which was causing him a great deal of discomfort, he was apprehensive and wanted to avoid the process. After a few minutes into his laser session he visibly relaxed, gave a big sigh of relief and started chewing. All very positive responses. Now when I arrive for his session he greets me and waits for his session to begin. During his session he stays perfectly still, knowing the laser is helping him to heal and feel better.

Gentle Graziano is a 23 yr old gelding who was diagnosed with a damaged tendon. I was asked to begin his laser treatments shortly after his injury. Graziano has a kind soul and has shown great patience with the healing process. He enjoys his sessions and thanks me in his own way each time.

Check out the sass with these two sweet little girls! Scamper takes the lead with a welcome that leaves no doubt about how much she enjoys her laser sessions. Sweet Daisy Mae follows Scamper’s lead with a more subtle greeting and total trust knowing that she will be feeling so much better after her treatment.

In October I was contacted about Laser Therapy for Mr. Fluff, who is a 13 year old Chi cross with Dachshund. He had been diagnosed with IVDD which caused him pain and impacted his mobility. When we met, it was evident that he also was very apprehensive about treatment, but once he felt the gentle warmth of the laser he relaxed and settled into his session revealing his very sweet personality.

Sweet Phoebe is a pleasure to treat. She is always on her best behavior and loves to have long chats during her sessions.

No stress for this girl, she shows her appreciation by moaning and groaning (sometimes snoring) through her sessions.

Emma Ross asked me to share her lovely message regarding my recent laser sessions on Ben, one of her gorgeous wolfhounds:

“Sometimes an amazing human comes into your life to work with one's dogs,in this case,my Irish Wolfhounds,Laurie is that human💜Laurie has helped heal several of my hounds who have had a few injuries. My beautiful Ben who is almost 9,took a tumble racing down the hill after a bunny,he slid on the wet grass, favouring his rear, spasms and tenderness,Laurie came to his rescue and through her visits with laser therapy,he has healed🥰Not only healed, but was Best in Specialty at our recent Irish Wolfhound Specialty show at the end of April 2024.The judge remarked several times, how she could not believe he was almost 9 and moved like a 4 yr. old.Made me so proud and grateful to Laurie for her dedication.I thank-you from the bottom of my heart and my Ben thanks you for all the visits and all the caring".
