5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GET A MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEM FOR YOUR AGING PARENTS

As your parents continue to age, your concerns tend to increase. You cannot be with them 24/7 and most aging adults enjoy their independence. However, it is always a good idea to have a safety net during times they are alone. A medical alert system is a great option for seniors. Following, are 5 reasons why you should get a medical alert system for your aging parents. You will also find different success stories involving medical alerts.

5 Reasons for Device

Popularity of Falls: One of the most common injuries among older adults (age 65 and over) are falls. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries. One in every three adults falls every year. “In 2013, 2.5 million nonfatal falls among older adults were treated in emergency departments and more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized.” There are several outcomes that can come from these falls. Falls can lead to broken and fractured bones, lacerations and brain injuries. This is why receiving medical attention immediately is so important. With a medical alert system, your loved one can receive help in a timely manner.
Peace of Mind: Worrying about your aging parents is very stressful. By having a medical alert system, you can focus on other things knowing your loved ones are monitored 24/7. It also gives the older adults confidence. Many seniors have a fear of falling or being stuck in situations. They can live their day as they please with the comfort of knowing they are safe if anything happens.
Medical Records: Some emergencies affect the ability to communicate. This is extremely important with older adults. Many aging parents have medical problems, such as, diabetic, risk of strokes or allergies. The medical alert monitoring station will have this on file and relay it to the first responders.
Comfort and Ease of Use: Over time, medical alert systems have changed to more comforting designs. Devices are easily worn on the wrist or neck. They are waterproof and have a battery backup. There is no need for your parents to memorize numbers or find their phone. All it takes is a push of a button to get the care you need. New ones can even work with cellular towers and go anywhere that there is cell service.
Notifications: When a device is activated emergency personnel are dispatched immediately. This includes, fire personnel, ambulance and police. In addition, the important people in the family are notified of the situation. With new GPS features the family and emergency personnel can even see where the loved one is. www.apexdirect.ca

How to set the date and tiime on your ADT Security System

Did your power shut off and cause the date and time on your ADT alarm system to reset? No worries, let’s run through how you can quickly set the right date and time on an ADT alarm system and get things working!

Setting the Date & Time on An ADT Alarm System: A Quick How-to

The process of setting up the date and time on your ADT alarm system will depend on your panel model -although the process will be roughly similar regardless of your hardware.

Even more good news, I’ve grabbed 5 of the most popular panel models to show you just how easy it is. Also, at the end of this blog, I’ll link you to a database of user manuals that we have. So if I didn’t cover your exact model, you can check it out there!

DSC Impassa

To set up the date and time on the Impassa ADT System, simply follow these directions:

Type in [*]
Then enter [6]
Next enter your Master Code
You’re all ready to set the date and time!

Let’s look at a couple more.

Lynx System

To set the date and time on a Lynx model, simply:

Enter your Master Code
Enter the [ #] sign
Enter the numbers [63]
After you’ve entered the following, you’ll be prompted to set up the date and time, just like the above system!

Safewatch Quick Connect

To set the date and time on the Safewatch Quick Connect:

Enter your Master Code
Select the function
Enter [63]
You’ll then be able to set up the date and time. See how easy that was?

Simon XT

To set up the date and time on a Simon XT panel, just:

Scroll on the display until you see Set Date
You’ll then be prompted to enter your master code
Press OK
From there, you’re ready to set the date and time!

DSC Powerseries

To get the date and time set up:

Press [*]
Press [6]
Enter your Master Code
Boom, you’re ready to set up the date and time on your DSC Powerseries.

As you can tell, the process for setting up on each of these panels is very similar.

Prevent Your Panel From Being Shut Off

Now that you know how to set the date and time on an ADT alarm system, one of the BIGGEST reasons we get asked this question so much is due to people experiencing unexpected power outages, causing their panel to power off.

One of the best ways to prevent your panel from powering off when your electricity inevitably goes off due to a storm or something is to invest in a backup battery.

The Importance of Security Cameras

When you’re the owner of a home, there are plenty of things to keep in mind. Whether it’s making sure your kids aren’t leaving a mess behind, or that you pay the bills on time, these are only a few responsibilities of being a homeowner. However, it’s also essential you keep your house secure at all times. While locking the door when you leave is important, you can’t monitor your house 24 hours a day, unfortunately. With that said, have you thought about purchasing a camera system? Here are several reasons why security cameras are a great tool for any homeowner, especially if you’re always on the go.

#1. Self-Monitoring

There are many homeowners who are worried about break-ins when they leave the house. Yes, they can lock the door behind them, but any determined criminal will simply break a window or find another way in. With that said, one of the best reasons for purchasing a security camera system, is because it self-monitors the activities in your home. Between going to work, visiting the local bank, or even picking up your kids from school, people are always busy with their lives. They certainly don’t have time to monitor their house 24/7. With that said, security cameras can record any unusual activities that have been going on. For example, if you heard news about suspicious activity going on in the neighborhood, that would be the perfect time to purchase a security camera system. Even if you were to take a vacation and come back a week later, you would be able to tell if something suspicious went on in your home. (The monitored security system would alert you immediately) There are plenty more benefits of owning security cameras, but it’s ability to record at all times, is one of its greatest strengths.

#2. Peace of Mind

Self-monitoring aside, another benefit of having a security camera, is that it gives you peace of mind. Most (if not all) homeowners value their property, and it could make them uneasy leaving the home unattended. You could be at the movie theater, for example, but not really into the feature because you’re too concerned about someone breaking in. Even more so, you could be on a one week cruise, but miserable the entire time since you’re worried about a robbery. By having a camera that does all the monitoring for you, you can go out and enjoy yourself while being rest assured your home is being watched and if coupled with the security system you or others could be notified if there was a problem. You know you will always have it recorded no matter what happens.

#3. Warns Criminals

Another benefit of having a camera system, is that it can help to prevent burglaries. While the security camera itself doesn’t necessarily sound an alarm or alert the homeowner in that sort of way, it can still be a warning sign and deterrent to the criminal. In fact, let’s look at how this would work. Some break ins occur without much planning, but others are premeditated. For days and even weeks on end, a burglar may hang around the neighborhood and watch the patterns of others. In fact, they may even check to see when each homeowner steps out of the house in the morning. Based on those patterns, they might choose the house that best suits them. With that said, if they noticed one of the houses had a security camera, wouldn’t they be more hesitant to rob it? If anything, it would be easier for them to break into a home which is less secure.

#4. Good Babysitter

If you have a camera system installed you can leave your children unattended at a younger age since you can keep an eye on them from your smart phone. This can be helpful if you think your children are old enough to leave them but want the additional peace of mind.

The 24/7 recording ability, giving you peace of mind, and warning criminals to stay way, are some of the benefits of purchasing a security camera system. For more information. Apex Direct at 1-888-559-2299

Five Smart Things You Can Do with an ADT Video Doorbell

Thinking about a video doorbell for your home? You're not alone. This connected front door device has been one of 2016's biggest and most popular smart home hits. It's a doorbell, a video camera, and a two-way communications device all wrapped into one—and it gets even better when it's installed as part of a smart home security system. Here are five really useful things you can do with one.
1: Answer the door from anywhere

When a visitor rings your video doorbell, it chimes like an ordinary doorbell but you also get an alert on your smartphone app. Tap the alert and you'll see a live video stream of your visitor. They can't see you but you can see them, and you can have a conversation through the doorbell's speaker and microphone.

This applies whether you're at home or away, enabling you to answer your door from the couch, from bed, or from your desk at work.

2: Secure a delivered package

video doorbell 2.jpg
Ever experienced the anxiety of having a valuable package being left on your porch when you're not there? With a video doorbell installed as part of your smart home security system, you won't need to worry.

When the delivery driver rings the bell, you can ask them to leave the package inside, unlocking your front foor with the smart lock icon that appears on the video call. When they step outside again and close the door, you can lock up just as easily.

3: Catch a suspicious caller in the act

As part of a smart home security system, your video doorbell becomes a full security camera, able to capture motion-triggered clips, alert you, and store your clips in Alarm.com's cloud for later viewing.

It's a great way to keep an eye on activity around your porch and driveway, which are the busiest outdoor areas on your property. At night, the camera can even trigger your porch light to come on when there's motion, giving you a well-lit video clip.

Should your camera catch something amiss—a suspicious caller or a prowling package thief, you'll find it easy to download the clip and share it with your local police department.

4: Keep up with the kids

video doorbell 3.jpg
Of course, much of the motion on your porch is welcome, and a video clip of it can be reassuring. For example, you can use your Alarm.com-powered video doorbell to send you a daily video alert when your kids arrive home from school. As well as knowing they're home safe, you can see exactly who they're with.

Kids also enjoy using video doorbells as a one-way ‘FaceTime' device, ringing the bell when you're at work to say hello and give you a wave.

5: Sleep undisturbed

Finally, what about the one time you don't want to hear from your kids? We're talking about naptime, the worst time imaginable for a loud doorbell chime to reverberate through your home.

An Alarm.com-powered video doorbell safeguards your hour of afternoon peace with ‘Do Not Disturb' mode: a mode that switches the chime off, but still sends you a text alert when a visitor rings the bell. Just open your app, see who's there, then decide (quietly) whether to answer or not.

How to get the smartest doorbell on the block

Ever installed a hardwired doorbell? It's not easy. To avoid the hassle, and other complications, get your video doorbell installed as part of a smart home security system powered by Alarm.com and ADT. www.apexdirect.ca 1-888-559-2299

ADT Home Security Systems and Wireless Home Alarm Burglary Monitoring from Apex Direct

How does ADT Monitoring work?

The way that ADT Monitoring works has a short and a longer answer. Which do you want to hear?

The short answer is that when the ADT alarm goes off the ADT monitoring station immediately contacts the home or business owner at 1-2 phone numbers and then notifies the authorities if they do not get an answer with the correct password on the account.

The longer answer has a little more detail to it.

How are ADT systems monitored?

ADT monitoring takes place over a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) Landline Phone or over a cellular network. Much like if you wanted to make a phone call you would either do it by a landline phone or by a cell phone. The popular VOIP phone options unfortunately usually do not work to provide a stable communication method. Since most people are getting rid of POTS lines and using cell phones only or VOIP phones, cellular monitoring has become the new industry standard.

What happens when the ADT Alarm goes off?

When the alarm goes off the siren will sound and ADT will receive a notification telling them what has triggered the alarm. (a door, window, a motion detector, etc…) Sometimes ADT will not get this signal for 30 seconds to reduce false alarms. (it is a setting in every alarm panel – CP01) Once ADT receives the signals the dispatcher will want to figure out if it is a real alarm or an accident. So they will call at least two numbers usually. For example if a husband and wife have the alarm, ADT would call both of them first before the police to help prevent false alarms.

Why are false alarms a big deal and what is a false alarm?

A false alarm is when a police officer is dispatched and there is nothing wrong. This can waste valuable city dollars and the officer’s time. Some police departments will fine you for every false alarm you get (most give you around 3-4 in a year). Some police departments will not even respond and require a third party guard service to verify the alarm is real first. Check with your local police department to know what policies they have. Many of them require an alarm permit now-a-days. The alarm permit is usually there to help educate alarm owners while also helping the city to keep track of how many false alarms there are so they can improve.

Other features for the ADT system

The ADT monitoring system can be armed remotely, through a a provided key fob, a smart phone or a tablet. In the event of a power outage, the system has a backup battery. ADT customers are encouraged to test their security monitoring system and to request a service call in case of a malfunction.

Monitoring cameras

ADT offers a set of cameras that can monitor your home which you can access remotely with a smart phone or a connected computer, Video signals are sent either by wifi or through a DSL line. The cameras can be synched up to motion detectors, causing them to automatically to view and record events that trip the detectors. Events are automatically recorded, which is of great value for law enforcement in identifying burglars after the fact.

The cameras can also be used to identify people who have access to the house when you are away, such as repair people and package deliverers. Since a time stamp is included, the cameras can catch children who are trying to sneak in after violating curfew. And it is always nice to be able to have a look at the empty house for reassurance when you are away from home.

Other features that ADT offers

ADT offers a number of other features, some related to security and some not.

The company has a fire alarm system that monitors smoke and unusual heat sources and automatically alerts both the homeowner and the fire department.

The company also offers a carbon monoxide monitoring service. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up in a home if a malfunction happens in a natural gas heating system. ADT will sound an alarm, alerting people inside the home to the presence of the gas. If no response is forthcoming, the company will then alert emergency services.

ADT also offers a way to remotely control locks, lights, the climate control system, and the garage door. It is calledADT Pulse.

The ability to lock and unlock the front door is useful if you want to admit a repair person or lock up after the kids go off to school. The lights can be turned off and on if you have not gotten home before dark to give the illusion of someone being home. The ability to adjust the climate control system is a great energy saving feature. Finally, opening and closing the garage door remotely will close off a means of entry and allow you to park your car without having to stop and leave your vehicle.

5 Fire Safety Tips you should Teach your Children

Home fires claim more casualties in the Canada each year than any other type of household accident. Children are especially vulnerable, which is why moms and dads everywhere should have a fire safety plan. Here are a few things to keep in mind when developing that plan.

Fire Safety Plan
The most important fire safety tip for children is to have a plan and ensure that everyone in the family knows how to follow it. Your plan should include:

Identifying at least two ways out of every room
Knowing who is responsible for getting younger children out during an emergency
An established meeting place once everyone is outside
2. Working Smoke Detectors

There should ideally be a smoke detector in each bedroom, and at least one on every floor of your home. Allow your children to help you install or test them, and explain what they are used for. Schedule a time on your calendar every month to check your detectors, and make your kids responsible for helping. You could even add checking smoke detectors to an older child’s chore list. Even better is to make sure you have a monitored smoke and heat detector that will automatically get help if there is a fire. You could also add a smoke ring or a fire fighter device to try and take advantage of your hardwired smoke detectors that are in the home already. Also, do not forget that smoke detectors usually last 7-10 years, when they reach the end of their life replace them with new ones. Removing all your smoke detectors from your home only makes it less likely to save property or life in the event of a fire.

3. Operating Fire Extinguishers

Working fire extinguishers are just as important as smoke detectors. You should have one in your kitchen and near every heat source such as your furnace. Older children should know where each one is located and how to use it. Your fire extinguishers should also be checked each month at the same time you inspect your smoke detectors.

4. Fire Drills

You can easily perform a fire drill at the same time you test your smoke detectors. During a fire drill, you should reinforce key information that would help kids stay safe during an actual fire. Some things to mention include:

How urgent it is to evacuate your home right away rather than trying to put out the fire yourself
The need to call 911 as soon as you have evacuated
The importance of staying low to the ground when trying to exit a building
Using the back of your hand to test whether or not a door is hot and safe to open
The fact that placing wet towels around a door will provide you with more time to be rescued in the event you are trapped inside a room
How to “stop, drop, and roll” if your clothes do catch on fire.
Reiterate how important it is not to go back inside a burning building. Stress to your children that items left behind can be replaced, but they cannot.

5. Establishing Rules

It is better to prevent a fire in the first place than to react to one afterwards. As such, you should implement the following fire safety rules:

Never play with matches or lighters (as an added precaution, always lock up matches and lighters so that children cannot access them)
Do not leave candles or a fireplace burning while unattended
Stay at least three feet away from space heaters
Store flammable items in a safe location, and keep them away from heat sources at all times
Do not use a generator, camp stove, or barbecue grill indoors
You may also need to set specific rules for your children based upon age. For example, you could need to prohibit very young children from using the stove without being directly supervised. Be sure your kids know what these rules are as well as the consequences for failing to follow them.

Implementing a fire safety plan is important; however, doing so does not eliminate all of the risk. As an added measure of protection, you may want to consider installing a security alarm to monitor for fire as well as break-ins, or if you have one add some smoke detectors to it so if there is a fire you and the fire department can know about it early on.
