Mira, the super sweet Portuguese water dog puppy, acing her U turn to the left at our community Rally obedience session at Ren's pets. Thanks Ren's for welcoming us!
An inside u-turn is challenging as when you are turning the dog has to pivot out of your way. This is something that we teach in class
How is this useful in everyday life? Well if you take your dog to the park and unload your dog from the car and start to walk toward the trail but then you discover that you have forgotten your poop bags, you need to turn and go back to the car. This is the perfect situation for a U-turn. If you haven't taught your dog slowly and systematically and positively to make a U-turn with you, then they will want to continue walking into the park while you need to walk in the opposite direction.
Smooth turning is an acquired skill. Your dog is not born knowing they have to walk loose leash on your left and right side and stay there no matter which direction you are going in.
Luna and her mom acing her Rally obedience exercises at a community Rally class session with our good friends at Ren's Pets who were kind enough to allow us to work in their awesome store.
It's actually harder than it looks to teach your dog to do a down stay or sit stay with you walking behind them. Most dogs in the beginning want to move. But if you want your dog to stay put in real life with people or dogs going by or people coming in and out the door, then you need to practice training your dog to down or sit and stay no matter what is going on around them. The key to success is breaking the exercise into tiny increments and rewarding the dog for each step. It's not about correcting the dog for failing. It's about setting the dog up for success.
Bugsy from our brain and body movement class doing back foot targeting on a platform. We teach front and back foot target on various obstacles so puppies and dogs will confidently learn to move across different surfaces and obstacles from plastic tarps to raised platform, through boxes etc . This translates into a dog who is more confident in real life.
We are opening registration for a puppy brains and body movement class now. 6x 1 hour classes.

Attention puppy owners do not miss this cool enrichment class. This is an awesome class to do along with puppy class for socialization and confidence building.
Our first brain and movement games class is having such a great time and we are seeing such wonderful results that I am launching a second class for puppies.
This is a tricks, puzzle, obstacle course and movement class .
It is really useful for dogs of all ages but especially puppies who need socialization to new things and dogs who are excited or fearful.
It is great to teach those growing puppy brains new skills, tricks and problem solving abilities. That translates into a more confident dog! Plus busy brain and body means a more tired puppy. Who does not want that?
It is zoom due to supplies needed in home. We use regular household supplies ie. Boxes, baskets, broom sticks etc.
This is a small class with personalized coaching and very easy because you use supplies that are in your home already.
I have the possibility of 7pm Sundays or 8pm Mondays starting April 14th. 6x 1 hour classes. Please connect right away by email to register as space is limited .

This is Bugsy doing a super job at one of the class games in his week 2 class. The puzzle gets harder with more obstacles and challenges as his confidence and abilities grow.
Bugsy is taking the class because he has anxiety and he shuts down in a regular group class setting. This is what his mom Lisa wrote about Bugsy taking the class.
"I have a very anxious dog, so anxious, in fact that he needs to be on antidepressants to help reduce his anxiety. After years of trying different courses and having absolutely no luck in bringing Bugsy to a class directly, I just trained him at home.
When Shelley offered me the opportunity to do this class via Zoom, I leapt at the chance .
From the moment we started this class Bugsy was so excited and was catching on so quickly. It has allowed me to expose him
