Earlier this month, we welcomed a senior construction class from to the sanctuary. This class of students is taking on a “Real-World Learning” project and are going to be building a goat playground for our friends! They came out to meet their clients (the goats!) and also run their design ideas by Steve. They are now back at school working on more detailed design ideas to give our goats platforms and structures to play on. They will come back to the sanctuary to build later this year. We are very excited to see what they come up with, but not as excited as the goats! We’re very happy to be working with the students of Carleton Place High School again this year. We are also going to be conducting a fundraiser with the support of the metal shop class and stay tuned for another exciting collaboration with the school happening in June! Thank you for the partnership, CPHS!

Sorry we’ve missed a couple of these due to some emergencies… but here we are, back with another Friend Friday with Savannah!

Savannah is one of the sheep that we welcomed from Big Sky in October 2023. Savannah lives with our two donkeys in their own paddock alongside the horses. Once the weather allows for fencing work to continue, the horses will be moving to a new paddock and Savannah and her pals will have their paddock expanded to the old horse paddock. This will mean more grazing and exploring, so Savannah will be thrilled! Savannah and her friends were very nervous when they first arrived here, but are now loving their barn and routine. Savannah is very fond of grain and also enjoys spending time with Hugo, who is the oldest sheep and is completely blind. Savannah seems to be gentle with him especially. Savannah enjoys cozying up in the hay in her barn and taking long naps in the sunshine. If the rest of the herd starts running, you can bet that Savannah is right there joining in! The sheep certainly have a strong flock mentality. Savannah and her friends are all looking forward to spring and new grass to munch on (and new haircuts!).

Thank you for supporting all of the ‘Sweet Sheep’–ewe are the best!

Next up in our Friend Friday is sweet Lena. Lena wanted to introduce herself!

I’ve finished my first winter here at Sweet Sanctuary and I couldn’t be happier! All of my goat friends from Big Sky live with me in our very own paddock–it’s so nice to have the familiarity of my family with me, and it really helped me feel comfortable as we all got settled into our new home. At night time, I go into a stall with my two best friends Buckley and Leo. I like them best because they are calm and quiet, and I like calm and quiet. I’m happy to sleep in between them without worrying that they might start playing in the middle of the night. Leo and Buckley are very much my speed!

In addition to getting settled in my home, I’ve also gotten used to the new care routines. I like to let the other goats go in the barn first for dinner. That way it’s nice and quiet for me. I also had a toe trim in my new barn, it was a little scary at first, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t that big of a deal to get a manicure… plus, my new farrier really loves llamas 💕

Since our move, I’ve seen a lot of changes already. Our stalls got an upgrade with more outlets to keep our water buckets warm in the winter. We also got a fancy new awning added to our barn which is my new favourite place to be. I love to eat my hay under there at breakfast and then nap in the leftovers in the afternoon sun! Now that the weather is getting warmer, I also like to get to the top of the paddock hill and lay in the sun there. Sleeping is definitely my favourite pastime! With love, Lena the llama

We’re coming to the end of the cold weather, and we’re so happy about it 👏

Taking care of animals in the winter is no easy task. We know our animals are always grateful for their warm beds, full bellies, and cozy company to snuggle with. Their happiness is worth all the frozen toes, fingers, and noses that we endure!

Thank you for supporting our work to provide a safe, loving forever home !

First up in our Friend Fridays is the lovely Leo!

According to astrology, Leos are confident, love being the centre of attention, sunny, and big-hearted. That certainly describes our Leo! Since his arrival, he hasn’t been the least bit shy. He loves people (and food!) and quickly learned to get to his stall first to get the first bite of dinner grain (see last pic 😅). His confidence has inspired the other more shy goats to follow his lead. He also loves scratches and extra pats from the staff and volunteers. One of his other favourite activities is climbing up on his platform outside and looking down at all the other goats below. He really likes to show off!

Leo is buddies with little tiny Buckley, despite being the biggest of our new goat herd. You might easily confuse Leo with Big Momma as they do look similar, and they even like to rest on the platforms in the same way! Maybe one day they will be friends! We love having Leo here with us. Welcome to our herd!

Hello, Sweet fam! It’s been a busy time for me getting settled into my new home. Along with Don-K and Punkin, we were the first animals from Big Sky to arrive at our new residence. We went through quarantine together, lived with Mini Wheat for a while, lived with the big horses for a while, and are now happily living with the sheep. Along with Don-K, I take care of the sheep and make sure they are safe and together. I take my job very seriously. Don-K and I live in our own custom built barn with our big sheep flock. We have our own stall that we share (because we share everything and are never apart - that’s the way we like it)!

In addition to watching out for the sheep, I also have a second job: I’m the farm alarm clock! I take great pride in being the loudest animal on the farm by far! I am the first one to sound the alarm in the morning, but I also like to give a final bray at night check. I am quite settled into the routine now. While all of my sheep friends are kept inside for the night, I like the option of choosing whether to be in my stall or outside, so my door is usually kept open unless it is very cold. I don’t mind the cold much, but I sure am looking forward to summer so I can enjoy more time grazing and exploring. I love doing that even more than I love braying! With love from, YoYo 🥰

Our pigs are all pretty cute when they cuddle up to sleep, but there is a clear winner in the cutest sleeper category: Arnie and Lola! Every single night, they sleep in the exact same way: belly to belly, snout to snout, often with Lola’s back legs resting on Arnie’s stomach. They are the sweetest friends and we love to see them sleeping so relaxed, happy, and free every night! 🌙

Introducing… Feature Fridays!

We had many new residents join us in 2023 ❤️ It was an incredible time of growth creating beautiful new homes and welcoming them all to their lifelong home with us. They’re all very special, and many of them are awaiting their formal introductions! We will be sharing these soon in our new series: Feature Fridays.

We hope you will enjoy getting to know the animals in their upcoming posts each and every Friday, starting with the lovely Leo 🐐 next week!

As winter comes to an end (yay!), we want thank you for your ongoing support–it has made a hugely positive impact ensuring our animals receive the very best care, and that we can continue to provide them with a lifelong home where they are free and happy!

Winter is an expensive time for the sanctuary as we go through more gas for snowblowing, more bedding for our animals, and a lot more feed to keep everyone warm and happy while grass is unavailable. Thank you so much for your support! ❤️

All of the expansion work we did in 2023 wouldn’t have been possible without our partnership with Big Sky Ranch and their generous support. We worked together for many months to ensure their sanctuary animals would have the forever home they needed and deserved. We are honoured to do this work alongside them and proud to call them our friends! Thank you to the BSR fam ❤️

About the Sweet Sanctuary

In 2016 we opened our hearts – and barn doors – to a herd of 7 slaughter-bound miniature horses; igniting a shared passion for helping helpless animals. Since then, we have continued to rescue and re-rehabilitate horses and other farm animals suffering neglect, abuse, and abandonment.

Our Mission & Vision:

The Sweet Sanctuary is a hands-on farm sanctuary, devoted to the daily care, rehabilitation, and individual needs of each animal. We provide sanctuary to at-risk horses and farm animals suffering neglect, abuse, or abandonment. We stand up for those that cannot stand up for themselves by providing care, sharing their stories, showcasing the true nature of farmed animals, and promoting wider adoption of plant-based eating to end animal suffering.

Together we can create a safe and peaceful refuge for animals in need while growing awareness and concern for the harsh realities of factory farming and the horse slaughter industry. We can build excitement in our community towards greater adoption of plant-based eating.
