Spooky Season may be upon us…. But tick season is still here! 👻 🎃 Make sure to still give your tick prevention until December, or until the weather stays below zero degrees to protect your furry friends against tick borne diseases!
The weather may be cool, but fleas and ticks are still active! Make sure to give your preventative until the weather is below zero degrees. 🦟

Today we had a patient come in for the removal of a cuterebra parasite. We typically see at least one every summer.
👉 Cuterebra are large flies that lay eggs near animal burrows, nests, or vegetation
👉 Larva commonly enter a hosts body when licked or swallowed during grooming
👉 Pet owners typically see swelling and an air hole
👉 Cuterebra larva will crawl out after one month to pupate and then emerge as an adult fly
Check out Dr. Verney demonstrating how to properly clean a dogs ears! Ear cleaning should be done routinely at home with a trusted cleanser from your vet to help avoid any potential ear infection.
Thanks to Bella for being such a good patient! 🐶
Reflecting back to a post last week, cats get parasites too!
Watch one of our RVTs take a tick off of a cats jaw with one of our tick twisters!
Instructions:
-use the appropriate sized tick twister for the size of tick (small or large).
-advance tick twister so that the tick is between the two arms of the twister and make sure to apply at the lowest visible portion of the tick to ensure complete extraction.
-twist the tick twister 2-3 rotations and pull the tick out.
When removing ticks, it’s important to use the right tool so that the entire tick is removed. If the head is still in the skin, it can still release contents that could possibly spread disease! 🦠
Make sure to afterwards to drown the tick in rubbing alcohol to ensure it dies, and do no squish/squeeze the tick! Call or email us with any questions.
We just wanted to share that given the mask mandate being lifted on June 11th, we no longer require you to wear a mask in the clinic!
If you wish to wear a mask during your appointment or would like our staff members to wear one, please kindly ask our receptionist upon check in.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of illness we ask you still follow Covid-19 protocol.
