Have you "herd" of FerAppease? 🐮

FerAppease is a synthetic analogue of the Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance (MBAS). The product has recently become a hit within the cattle industry. It has been recommended for use in healthy animals in all types of stressful scenarios e.g. castration, dehorning, weaning, vaccination, parturition, breeding etc.

Applicator guns are sold separately.

For more information see below:
Note: All information has been sourced directly from the Fera website.

What is FerAppease MBAS?
The active ingredient of FerAppease is a synthetic analogue of the Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance (MBAS). MBAS is naturally secreted by the sebaceous gland located on the skin of the mammary gland with the unique function of inducing an appeasing effect on the nursing offspring.
FerAppease is topically applied, and the active ingredient (MBAS) is assimilated by the vomeronasal gland located in the nose of the animals. The MBAS stimulation of the vomeronasal gland desensitizes regions of the amygdala and the hypothalamus, dramatically decreasing threat perception and its downstream stress consequences.

How do you apply FerAppease?
FerAppease is for use only in healthy cattle by topical administration behind the poll and to the skin above the muzzle.

What is the dosage of FerAppease on Cattle?
> 200 lb: Apply 5 mL of FerAppease behind the poll and a second 5 mL application to the skin above the muzzle.
< 200 lb: Apply 2.5 mL of FerAppease behind the poll and a second 2.5 mL application to the skin above the muzzle.

How long before FerAppease takes effect?
Behavior modulation and stress mitigation starts to take place immediately after FerAppease is applied.

Is there a withdrawal period after using FerAppease?
No, there is no withdrawal period after using FerAppease.

What is the duration of each application?
FerAppease is effective for a period of 14 days. Most economically relevant, stressful events have a duration of less than 14 days. Therefore, a single application will get the animals through the entire challenge period.

For more information or if you'd like to order, please feel free to phone the clinic on 780-632-2515

We’ve all heard of the winter blues, but what about the summer time scratch!! 🙀

Right now we are right smack bang in the middle of tick season, and recently we’ve been seeing and hearing of them more and more.

Well we know what you’re all thinking… It’s Alberta, there’s no ticks here. Unfortunately this is NOT TRUE. Over the years ticks have slowly been working their way into the province. Although most ticks here don’t carry the dreaded Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi bacteria that causes Lyme disease. That does not mean it’s completely ruled out. Please keep in mind migrating birds and other wild life have free range and ticks are very happy to hitch a ride. 🚘 ✈️

Also, don’t forget fleas. Unlike ticks that hibernate below 4degrees, these little ninjas are active all year round. It’s always a good idea to keep fresh bedding, vacuum carpet and avoid sleeping with your pet if they’re unprotected and out adventuring. 🏕️

We would highly recommend keeping your pet covered for ticks and fleas. One chewable treat, or simple spot on treatment once a month can help prevent external creepy crawlies from your dog or cat. Please note this is a prescription medication.

Right now these treatments are “crawling” out the door. So be sure to give us a call to put your order in. #780-632-2515

Did you know we are Pneu-dart suppliers⁉️⁉️

Imagine… it’s this time of year. Cows are all out to pasture and foot-rot starts to develop in your herd. Well, as much as we’d all like to think we can, the cowboy days aren’t as easy as it used to be. Treating livestock has become much simpler and more convenient with the pneu-dart system.🤠

For this reason we have started to carry more stock, and with more interest we’ll build. So spread the word.

Please note for sale of products we do require information such as PID number.

For more information please contact the clinic. 780 632 2515. Our staff are more than willing to give you as much information as they can and help find the right system for your herd. 🐮

It is HOT out there this week! ☀

Heat stroke is a serious concern in our pets when temperatures rise. Please ensure your pets have access to cool, shaded areas and fresh cold water to drink at all times. Keeping a watchful eye on them is necessary if they are outside as the dangerous effects of heat stroke can set in very quickly.

If you suspect your animal is overheating, please get them to a cool environment and seek veterinary care urgently.

☔️ We love the rain! ☔️

Although with the wet season comes sore feet.

Recently we have been seeing multiple horses for founder or otherwise known as laminitis.

This is a condition that causes the coffin bone to rotate or sink downward into the hoof capsule and become very painful, resulting in severe lameness.
Laminitis can present with mild lameness to non weight bearing. Horses may be seen walking on their heels or leaning back to take the weight off the toes.
Throbbing digital pulses can occur and feet may feel hot to touch. Acting distressed, sweating, hyperventilating and having an increased heart rate are all signs of pain and discomfort.

There can be multiple causes:
- Obesity 🐴
- Carbohydrate overload, lush green pasture or grass /alfalfa hay with high sugar content.
- Consuming excess grain. 🌱
- Bacterial toxins within the blood stream (infections) 🌡️

We would recommend feeding a well balanced grass hay when the grass is growing and lush to aid in preventing these issues.

Laminitis can also be seen in winter months and this could be a sign of cushings disease. If you are seeing any of the above signs or symptoms in your equine herd, we would highly recommend a vet visit.

If you have any questions or would like to book a visit feel free to call the clinic #780 632 2515
