In the past few weeks, two "big name" positive reinforcement dog trainers I am connected with through FB have had their accounts/pages hacked and they have had to create new accounts/pages. I'm certainly not a "big name" in the training world, but I might have drawn attention to myself with posts promoting force-free training and anti-aversives. Who knows if this is a trend or not.
If you see my account/page/group has been hacked, just contact me through email. (You can email me through my website oberhund.com) And be sure to leave the group, unfollow the page, and un-friend me.
BTW, I'm not sure I want to create a new account/page/group. I might take it as a sign that it's time to move on from social media! LOL

Fang is a 5-year-old English Bull Terrier/Old English Bulldog mix.

Fang and his handler Danielle were very close to taking the provincial public access test for service dogs in Alberta, however, Fang was attacked by a couple of dogs shortly before that and as a result showed some dog reactivity. He also had some health issues with his hips. For these reasons Danielle had to make the difficult decision to retire Fang early (service dog handlers often call early retirement of a service dog “washing a dog”).

Fang was a multi-purpose service dog for chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, as well as some other disabilities. He was trained to pick items up, provide deep pressure therapy (DPT) to help reduce his handler’s chronic leg pain, orbiting (circling around the handler) to create space in line-ups, blocking (providing a buffer between the handler and people), alerting to high heart rates, as well as alerting to panic attacks. Fang also naturally alerts to seizures. He was also trained to guide Danielle in states of disassociation and followed whomever Danielle was with.

Even though Fang had to be retired early, he still lives with his family and Danielle’s service dog in training Crota. Fang sometimes still tasks for Danielle by providing DPT and he also loves to grab the laundry from the washing machine and hand it to Danielle.

This is an interesting, reasoned discussion about why it's important to give animals choice and a sense of agency, and how skilled trainers adjust their approaches to accommodate the learners. If the animal is "saying no" then the trainer needs to adjust to create conditions where the animal will happily "say yes."

Learn what it means to incorporate choice and control in training plans, the impact of negative reinforcement, and how to think beyond labels by measuring ob...

We have more tips to share during Raw Feeding Week to help you incorporate fresh, whole foods into your floof's diet! 👇

🐟 Sardines are a small but mighty source of omega-3 fatty acids for skin, coat, and joint health. Sardines can easily contribute to a healthy diet by being a portion of the meal. Add a sardine to your floof's bowl and easily beat up on cancer, relieve allergies, lose weight or even suppress seizures! Aside from all of those amazing health benefits, sardines are an easy way to start including fresh, whole foods into the diet! If you want to see how many sardines your furry family should have, you can see our recommended amounts in our blog! Just search for sardines! 🐟

Ever wondered why a puppy's behavior seems erratic during adolescence, which occurs between six months and 18 months of age?

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, s*x hormones are changing which effects the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to modulate sensory processing and subsequent behavior.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control.

So what does this mean? This could mean that your dog, who used to come when called, suddenly cannot. This could mean that your dog, who didn't jump up on guests, suddenly does. Your dog that walked nicely on leash is now pulling. Or perhaps it seems like some days your dog responds to behaviors you ask of them, and some days they don't, without any rhyme or reason.

We also see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, frustration and impatience sometimes cause us to act unpredictably.

This adds to your puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for puppies to adjust.

By understanding this we can gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we can help create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best selves.

Salty Service Dog comic for your Sunday.
I’ve always said that there’s no such thing as a “fake service dog”, just a dishonest human. The dog didn’t put the vest on, the owner did.
You’d be surprised by the amount if Service Dogs injured by untrained, reactive dogs brought into public places where they have no business being in the first place.
Pet owners: please don’t do this.

No dogs are shocked in this video.
