The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of Canada is the official voice of Tollers in Canada and is run entirely by volunteers from all across Canada. Established in 1974, the club was formed to promote and educate about the breed and we celebrated 60 years of recognition with the Canadian Kennel Club in 2005. The Toller was recognized as a pure breed by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1945. The b

reed also enjoys the status of being the official dog of Nova Scotia, the province of its origin. The Toller is the first breed of dog to be recognized this way in Canada. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Toller) is one of five recognized Canadian breeds of purebred dogs. The others are Newfoundland, Labrador Retriever, Canadian Eskimo Dog and the now extinct Tahltan Bear Dog.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to see our club’s trophies, here they are. Barbara Blauvelt, right, from Yarmouth and I (Isabelle Southcott from BC) visited the Yarmouth Museum to see our lovely display last week and read the names of the special Tollers that have won these trophies in days gone by.

Yesterday I visited the Yarmouth Museum to get some information on our club’s trophies in advance of the National Specialty, which will be held in July in BC, next year. Museum Curator Nadine Gates showed me and Barbara Blauvelt around the museum and we photographed all the trophies and visited the archives where some very early NSDTR breeding records, photos, and important early Toller information is stored. It was a fascinating visit and helped me realize just how deep the link between the history of Yarmouth is with the Toller itself. People here still call them Little Rivers, like Nadine at the museum. Although we show them, hunt them, do field trials and hunt tests, dog sports and obedience with them, and of course love them as special family members, these dogs were developed to put food on the table so hunters could feed their families. If you ever have the chance to visit the museum consider booking a time to look at some of the historical records in the archive. The more I learn about these dogs the more in awe I am of the people who worked so hard to create the foundation of what we have today. It is an honour to learn about the history of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

Happy Canada Day! On this day let's honour Tollers as they are one of only four existing breeds recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (Newfoundlands, Labrador Retriever and the Canadian Inuit Dog are the others). Extinct are the Tahltan Bear Dog and Salish Wool Dog, both of which serve as an important reminder as to why it is vitally important to preserve our purebred dogs. Here's a super video about our favourite breed by the Canadian Kennel Club.

The Canadian Kennel Club is thrilled to announce the release of our new YouTube series hosted by CKC member Ian Lynch and produced by CKC member Mariah Lara....
