Nova Scotia SPCA - Cape Breton Shelter Rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming pets in need thanks to animal-lovers like you. We take in animals by appointment only so please call ahead. We can help.
(243)

The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet. Meet the handsome Jax! 🩵

This unbelievably sweet senior has been waiting to find his perfect match for 35 days! Jax seriously has a heart of gold and endless love to give! He is looking for a human companion who will go on nice long walks with him, making sure to take time to stop and smell the flowers. This precious boy would love nothing more than a quiet home with someone affectionate, attentive and caring. You will almost never see Jax without a big smile on his face, tail wagging and ready for a hug! He just adores attention and is a friend to all he encounters! Jax is a little overweight right now so will require a home with someone active to ensure he gets daily exercise and is kept on his special diet. In the past, this charming pup had lived with cats and dogs so would be happy to have a fur-sibling at his new home and with his gentle disposition, he would be a great fit for a home with kids!

Interested in meeting jovial Jax? Come on down to the shelter!

*Jax requires a special diet to live a happy and healthy life due to his allergies. Please speak to staff for more information!*

The author of this caption does one thing every single Thursday - calls 50/50 winners to tell them the furr-tastic news. There’s disbelief, joy, sometimes tears of happiness🤩

While these calls make our week, how did they start? Who are the people who actually make this happen? What are some of the stories behind fundraising using a raffle? 🤔

Well, we invited two people from the platform that makes this possible to tell us all about it. Elizabeth O’Hanley and Lee Dawson from Rafflebox are spilling some secrets in our newest PAW’dcast episode and we couldn’t be more excited for you to listen to it. 🤗

The weather forecast calls for hot, humid weather this week. Please keep your best bud safe.

Your vehicle – even with the windows down – can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death.

When the weather is warm, it’s best to leave your four-legged friend at home. If you can’t, use the drive-through, curbside pickup, or visit pet-friendly businesses to avoid a potentially tragic outcome.

If you encounter an animal in a vehicle that appears to be in distress (exaggerated panting; anxious or staring expression; muscle tremors; lack of coordination; red or blue tongue and lips; convulsions; vomiting; or collapse), call 911 and stay with the animal until officers arrive.

If you’re unsure if an animal is in distress, call the Nova Scotia SPCA - Enforcement at 1-888-703-7722 and speak with the call-taker.

Did you know we have a College of Animal Welfare? And did you know we are accepting applications for our Veterinary Assistant (VA) program? 🤔

Small class, hands-on learning and gaining real-world experience before graduating are a few of the things that make the Nova Scotia SPCA College of Animal Welfare the paw-some program for you. 😎

The next VA class starts September 3rd in Dartmouth, and we are excited to welcome you! If you know someone in your life who would be interested, share this post with them. 🤩

For more information, visit spcacollege.ca. ⬅ Don't leave the website without applying! We can't wait to meet you!

P.S.: Brianna and Poutine are both alumni. Brianna of our College of Animal Welfare and Poutine of our Dartmouth Shelter. 💙

Have you ever met someone that came into your life and changed it for the better? For Dan and Lindsey, that someone was a dog named Ollie. 🐶 When Ollie passed, a hole was left in their hearts. 💔 To honour Ollie’s memory, they wrote a beautiful obituary and encouraged animal lovers to donate so that other dogs like him could be given a chance at a meaningful life. 🐾

12/06/2024

As summer approaches, it's important to remember that hot weather can pose significant risks to our pets. From heatstroke to dehydration, pets are vulnerable to various health issues during the warmer months. ☀️ Here's how you can keep your pets safe all summer long:

🟡 Ensure your pet has access to fresh water and shaded areas.
🟡 Never leave pets in cars, even with cracked windows, as temperatures can rise quickly.
🟡 Take your pet out during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings.
🟡 Consider getting pet insurance with Nova Scotia SPCA Pet Health Insurance to help with coverage for emergency care, ensuring your pet receives prompt and necessary care immediately.

Remember, taking preventative measures and having pet insurance isn't just a precaution; it’s a lifeline that can provide security and peace of mind in an emergency, ensuring your pet’s safety and well-being. 🐾 Find out more about Nova Scotia SPCA Pet Health Insurance plans here: www.spcanspetinsurance.ca ⬅️

It happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, the 7-year-old stray kitty was walking down the street. The next minute, he was airborne, having been grabbed by a large bird of prey. 🦅 His future looked bleak. Thankfully, the angels were watching and he got a second chance at life. Now, he spends his days safely indoors watching Cat TV, play-hunting with his dad, and snoring. 😻

Our Story

Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
