Yesterday was a hard day …
It started by a sweet old boy “Taco” owned by Jennifer Girard, having colic from an unknown cause. He just was too old to recover and sadly he was put to sleep.
Later that day we had an appointment to put to sleep Ashley’s old boy TNT. This boy had an array of issues, but it was the navicular issue that ultimately was making him so uncomfortable. Our patient farrier would spend an hour to get his shoes on, giving him breaks in between. But he was never completely comfortable, laying down constantly, and pain meds didn’t seem to help. Ashley came home the night before to spend time with him, and yes we were both there with him as he fell asleep for the last time. The decision was a very hard one to make, but he is finally at peace.
Both these boys will be so missed at the barn 😢

There appears to be a rumor going around that we have Strangles.

IT IS FALSE.

None of the horses boarded here have strangles, and no horse that was hauled in has had strangles.
Please know under no circumstances would I hide such a problem.

Posting for a friend, two well bred performance horses:

2021 registered cowbred quarter horse gelding and mare.
Gelding has had 120 days by Austin Dow and is currently riden 5 days a week by owner here at GJR.
Mare also had 120 days by Austin as well as 30 days on the flag. Currenty in training with Loren Christianson of Classic Performance Horses.
Video in comments of gelding from this past Saturday of his first time introduced to cattle.

Congratulations to Alessandra Leroux and her OTTB “Eddie” placing 2nd, 4th and 5th in the 2ft. Also to Grace Cowan and “Mocha” who placed 6th in the 2ft and 6th in the 2’3! 
Proud of both these girls for the hard work and dedication they put in 💕

Just got a call from my favorite vet Dr.Emily at Westhills and our beloved Tundra Dee Bar has Cushings. I have been suspecting something was off with him all summer, and was suspecting Cushings, so I decided to get a Senior exam and Cushings test done. Apart from fairly severe Cushings, he is doing fabulous for a 24 year old ❤️
I guess this is just a reminder to listen to your gut, if you think something is off, even its small, get it checked. I am so glad I did, and get to keep my boy happy and healthy for a few more years.
And in case you didn’t know, its seniors month at Westhills and there is also a free Cushings test offered to those at risk! (I didnt know that so was a bonus )

Glory J Ranch has a few spots available for boarding. We are a small family run facility offering pasture and paddock board. Automatic waterers, shelters and meal feedings. Amenities include a small heated indoor arena, 2 outdoor arenas and a round pen. Flag is available in the indoor arena and typically cattle work late summer when the calves are weaned. Jumps are available.

First time training a mini to pull a cartfor a client (yes she knew I had never before) and ended successfully… yay 🤩😂 But now I find it fun and so looking at my 4 minis and contemplating their future 😜

Recently I got a cute little gelding in for a quick tuneup before starting Pony Club with his tiny rider. This horse came from a local rescue who listed him as a kids horse. I quickly realized this horse has zero buttons and definitely not ready for a child. Yes he’s super cute. Yes you can hop on his back and plod around. But his stop is subpar. He won’t bend or give to the bit. He spooks. He lacks confidence and independence. He definitely had been trained, but poorly.

It’s spring and many people are looking for a good mount for their child, or even themselves. Here’s a few pointers to avoid ending up with a horse that either will not work for them, or, as in this case, requires the horse to be restarted with no guarantee it will be the ideal mount in the end.

1) There are many unethical trainers and “rescues” try to push horses through. Do not believe everything you read on them, find out first hand. 🚩 horse writeup makes him sound like a unicorn with absolutely no problems
2) If you are able to try the horse out, bring a knowledgeable horse person, that you trust. Trainers and horse brokers will find horses and view them with you for a fee… there’s a few great ones out there that are well worth the cost.
3). Ask for video of the horse at a walk/trot/canter. Random photos sitting on the horse mean nothing. 🚩 horse is following another horse in the video or the video is super short
4) Ask to view the horse being caught, groomed and tacked up. Always get the owner or trainer to ride first. 🚩 horse is tacked up when you get there and has sweat on him already
5) Try out the horse a couple times before deciding. A common saying with trainers is that you can always “steal a ride”… meaning a horse can have a good day and not show his vices, but they are still there and you might find them the next time around. 🚩 horse bolts on rider and seller says “oh he’s never done that before”. Horses are living beings with their own personality and quirks, thats fine, as long as you are made aware of them and get to decide if you are comfortable dealing with it.
6) Get a pre purchase exam done! Bute can make a lame horse look sound for one ride. 🚩 PPE is refused as the seller doesn’t have time or they have too many other buyers interested who aren’t asking for that

Please let me know if anyone has any other red flags 🚩 , or advice, new horse buyers should be aware of 😊
